Hi I work 30 hours a week and I do extra duties to cover my managers holiday as I am the duty manager. We now have a training duty manager who is working with us temporarily until April and she works 37 hours a week. So my manager is on holiday in 3 weeks time and doesnt want me to do extra duties because the trainee is there for cover, however as soon as she leaves my manager is expecting me to do all the covering again. I feel abit unfairly treated. Is this fair?
I'm not sure I understand the problem. Presumably as part of training to be a duty manager the trainee needs to actually do the job at some point? What's wrong with her doing it while your manager is off? If's she's only with you training for a couple of months it's not like she's taking over your job or anything.
Will you lose money or something, do you get paid extra while your manager is on holiday usually? If you could explain why you don't feel this is fair it might help me understand.

I assume you will lose extra paid hours if the trainee is covering? It's a tad unfair but makes business sense to have her do it as part of her normal (37hour) working week. If the extra hours you do are not part of your (20hr) contract, there's little you can do. Apart from refusing to do the extra when she moves on but that makes little career/financial sense for you either.

What annoys me most is that as soon as she's left I will be expected to do the extra duties. I did extra over Christmas when they were both off. I understand it makes sense from a business point of view but I feel a bit used, I'm always willing to do extra duties I've cancelled appointments to do them but now I think when my manager is off in may she will expect me to do extra duties and why should I?

Well you don't have to do them, you can simply refuse. But that's cutting off your nose to spite your face isn't it? It sucks a bit but what else could you do? Is there opportunity to increase your contract to 37hours? Could you do it? If there's no opportunity or you don't want to or can't because of other commitments then there's nothing you can do. Except whinge a bit
