I am going to ask for a pay rise despite going on maternity leave next April

Are my employers obliged to ignore the fact that I am going on maternity leave?

And if I write a letter do I put in all the fabbo things that I have done or just ask baldly?

And what if they say, we'll give it to you when you come back from mat leave - is that legal?

They are noty allowed to treat maternity leave as anything other than full employment so you are entitled to ask. Obviously they are entitled to refuse, but not on the grounds that you are pregnant, as that is Sexual Discrimination. They can say, we'll give it to you on X date though.

get your pay rise in NOW, your mat benefits will then be bigger!

Go in armed with facts AND ask baldly. If you don't ask you don't get. Always ask for more than you want, they will always offer less, and then you will get what you originally wanted iyswim.

And another thing....do you think a MAN would have started this thread?????!!!!!!! They would already have the pay rise woman.

Get in there pronto.

well we have made more money than ever before with me in charge, also more public funding and a higher profile.

Make a list of all the things you have improved and tell them.

I have done this loads but have got the front of Blackpool, as my mother would say.

Pretend to be Madonna. Bet she would get a pay rise no prob.

have never asked for own pay rise before,ever.

have written fantabulous letter making me sound like the entire arts council rolled into one person

my assistant rang my boss and said if she didnt get a £2,000 pay rise she would leave. Now we dont want her to go, so if we give her what she wants then there won't be enough for me to have the kind of pay rise I wanted .

Feel very very pissed off

Actually, E, use this to your advantage. He's said it. Soooooooo...if you don't get your payrise you go ballistic and contact the EOC and anyone else you can think of. Sorted.

surely pay awards are made on the basis of annual reveiw etc and the quality of performance in the year just past?

can be no grounds for not considering it.

i'd get everything in writing just in case

i know but I really dont want the hassle of doing all that.

I just want a pay rise. And also I feel really aggrieved with my assistant - we had discussed this am how I would ask for more money for her and me.

He said 'of course we would like to give you a pay rise but we have to give J one'

Hang on, would it be the end of the world if she left? Will she really leave if her stamping foot doesn't get what's requested? Is this a good precedent for them?

Enid check out the maternity alliance web site, think its .com, has all your rights on there, but from what I remember they should award as if you were at work, nothing should change.

yes, its def sex discrimination if they treat you differently to any other employee because you are pregnant. just saying you know this might make a difference.

i think the ACAS website is very good if you want to have legal ammo.

I told him on the phone that he must consider maternity leave as full employment. He said he knew what he was saying was illegal.

I think if your assistant has upped the ante in this way, you are totally entitled to up the ante on your account and point out that you're utterly prepared to act on the basis of his illegal statement and talk to all the relevant bodies. The EOC is doing a massive campaign on pregnancy discrimination and they would lurve to hear from you.

And I can give you the number of exactly the right person to talk to there, too

I used to have a boss who said pay rises shouldn't happen after appraisals, or be expected annually. He never quite said when they should happen either. Bloody small charities - make me seethe with their half-arsed way of doing things and power-mad directors with their own agendas and long lunches and perks because they feel like it but expecting nose to grindstone and then some from their employees. Ahem. Still riles me somewhat.

Back to you, Enid - get the bastard. And think they should call your assistant's bluff too - after all, if she does it this time, she'll do it again.

I dont work for the arts council

but I do work for a government funded arts organisation - I doubt our funders would let a claim get to court tbh they are very hot on equal opportunities.
