I have been offered some of the new one to one tuition but as my current CRB is for a neighbouring county I have to be rechecked for this one. I have just had it returned as it says I have to pay £50 as I am a supply teacher - surely this can't be right especially as far as I can see they don't plan to pay me till then end of the 10 week period - tell me I don't have to find £50 this close to Christmas I applied for the work because we really need the money - now!

My dh is a peripatetic one to one music tecaher and he has never had to pay for any of his numerous checks himself.

If you are freelance then your own check should either be enough or they should pay for it for you. I guess it depends on how much you want the job as opposed to how much they want you.

A friend does supply and had to pay for her own CRB checks in 3 different LAs as each required a separate check someone is making lots of money

Just to confirm- you need another CRB check for each county/job etc.

I work in two different capacities - one as a teacher- and have had to have 2 different checks.

Whether you have to pay for them yourself is down the the employer- so in your case it looks like they are passing the fee onto you.

You cannot ask for a check yourself anyway- it has to be done under an umbrella organisation such as an agency or your LEA/employer. I'd go back to t hem adn query why they won't pay it.

I would not be surprised if you to have to pay it yourself, OP, as a supply rather than full-time employee. Friend who does similar work has to pay for his own, too. But worth querying, definitely.

Does anyone else find this system crazy? I am doing a language club in one LEA where I have had the CRB check done through the school. I have been told I am not allowed to help in Reception class at my daughter's school as I don't have a CRB check from her school. Yet I already run a club in the same school!

From the other side, I work at a Univeristy and if we paid for everyone who needs a CRB to have one it would cost an absolute fortune.

But I agree, the CRB should be "transferable" between jobs.

It's worth asking if you can either be reimbursed for it once you've paid, or check with HMRC if it's tax deductible.

I would encourage you to try to get the school to pay.
At our school you would have to pay though as you are earning. Volunteers are free.

I had to have one for the Youth Council that I have set up for our parish - but the Parish Council paid for me.

It is crazy that if I was to do work in school I would have to have another one even though it is the same kids.

I have one through an employer but it's in a different area to where my DC's are at school.

The school offered to pay for the second one. It is a rip off though, apparently it's changing so it can be more flexible.

the thing is that is CAN be transferred - but that people "taking the risk" won't take that risk, as the check is only as current as the day it was done.
