What to do? In a quandry over changing schools!

Our dd and ds currently go to a school which is about 15 minutes drive from our home. The school is split between two sites (called the North and South locations) and the kids go to the North. However, we are moving house in the summer holidays and, by chance, are moving about 5 mins walk from the South location. It is possible to apply to transfer from one site to the other, although there is a waiting list. The dilema we have is whether to move the children to the site near our new home. Obviously, the children would prefer to stay where they are because they have lots of friends and know the teaching staff, but they recognise that it would be lovely to walk or cycle to school and have friends who lived close by, rather than a drive away.

The teachers at their current location are excellent (also the teachers they will have next year) and I would be really sad to move on this count alone. As for the teachers at the South location, the teacher dd would have is supposedly the best in the school but has been off sick all year due to a serious car crash and related problems and there is some doubt as to whether she will return and the teacher ds would have is not supposed to be very good.

We are really uncertain what to do for the best. It would be so lovely to walk to school rather than drive 25 minutes through busy traffic from our new house, but is it worth it? Does anyone have any thoughts?? BTW, the curriculum is exactly the same for both sites.

robinw, they are 7 and 5. I guess I also have to consider ds2 who will be 2 in the autumn and will probably start to go to a local playgroup a couple of mornings a week

Hi robin, the secondary school takes kids from both sites, although I doubt we'll be here that long (we don't live in U.K and plan to move countries again in about 4 years) The school in question is an international school so lots of kids come and go. I just worry for ours who have had 3 schools in 2 years that maybe they need the stability of staying in the same place for a while. Thanks for the advice: its so hard to be objective with your own kids!!

They won't find it difficult if they are used to it. As an RAF brat I went to a new school every 2 years until senior school.
