When will DD start school? and is this 'reception', or 'year 1'?

Am a bit confused!

DD's birthday is 3rd September (she was born 2002), so I am expecting her to start school when she is 5, which will be 2007.

Is this right? And if it is, will this year be 'reception' year or 'Year 1'? As I understand it, though I don't know where my info is from, reception year isn't compulsory and so when she starts school in 2007 she will be in year 1.

Does that mean she will go into reception the year before, in 2006? Is reception usually full time?

Sorry if this is rambled, am a bit confused!!

I would have thought she'd start Sept 2007 in reception year .. in our school the birthday range is 1 September to 31 August for those rising 5

reception year is compulsory though

she could probably start pre-school (2 and a half hours a day) from age 3 or 3 and a half

she will go into reception the school year (01/09-30/08) she turns 5, so 2007. Some schools do reception part-time for the first term or half term, some start full time.

Children generally start reception the school year they turn 5 in. It's not compulsory to send your child to school until they are 5 I think (send to school or home educate) so reception is compulsory once your child is 5 unless you are HE-ing.

it will by then be compulsory for her as it becaomes comp as soon as they reach 5; but she will go into Rec, not Y1

Aah, I see. So reception year will be 2007 and year 1 will be 2008.

I think thats where I got confused. Because I thought reception wasn't compulsory I thought she didn't have to start school til the year after, but then she would be 6, which I thought was a bit old!!

I have got her into a playgroup 2 mornings a week already, but I have to pay £6 a session, which I think decreases once they turn 3 or 3 and a half?

Dingle, dd will be the same. At the end of next August she'll turn 4 and start at beginning September in Reception. She's tiny anyway and will be dwarfed by those almost a year older. However, as I understand it, because she won't turn 5 until the following August, legally her attendance is optional until Sept 2006 , the term after she turns 5, although she'd have to go straight into Year 1 then.

To go back to Mum2Ela's question whether your dd will start full or part time depends on the school. Some would take the eldest full time straight away, others from October half term or somehwere in between. Those turning 5 later in the year might go full time at the beginning of the term in which their birthday falls or remain part time all year for summer birthdays, perhaps even starting later, in January or at Easter. It just varies.
