How old is he?

My DS1 is 5, in Reception. He's fallen asleep once since he started school, but he was really ill and vomited when I woke him up.

He's not really one of those 'fall asleep anywhere' sort of children.

Mine never have but a friend has mine who has 4 children said her eldest often fell asleep when she was in reception, in fact the teacher used to come out and say to her Mum "shes asleep again" ina jolly voice.

DS2 fell asleep once in Reception. He was 4 and about 2 months. When he got home he developed a very high temperature and was ill for a couple of days.

When I was reaching Reception, I taught one child who regularly fell asleep during singing and afternoon assemblies. The first thing I did was to speak to the parents to check whether he still slept in the afternoons at weekends.

When it turned out that he regularly still had a sleep, I suggested to his mum that he would benefit from doing more half days at school, or shorter days until we both felt that he was ready for full time school again.

Alternatively, it could be that your ds just finds the music very relaxing!

We had one boy in year 10 who regularly fell asleep in clas, but that was due to his father taking him to the pub until 11 each night

I think in reception etc it is quite common. they are such busy little bees

DS1 was born a couple of weeks early in August. He was only just 4 when he started school and he fell asleep most afternoons his first term.

I regret now not asking if he could start school the following year especially as if he had been born late ie 10 days or so he would not have started school until the following September.

Give him a banana to eat on the way to school or in his lunchbox for slow-release energy.
I helped in a Reception class once on the day of the evening nativity play. The teacher turned down all the lights, played twinkly music and got them all to have a liedown in the afternoon because she knew they'd all be up late that night. It was so sweet.

Is he rushing his lunch to get outside and play? I used to find this happened a lot, particularly when the weather started to get warm enough to be on the field playing football!!
