is there a way to find out how 'busy' your intake year is for primary schools?

ie how many babies were born in the same academic year in a local area?

Try ringing the admissions department of the local education authority.

Birth & registry office maybe. But a good way to get a feel for it is if you have to wait to get into various activities (e.g Tumble Tots, swimming) or if local Mother & Toddler group is busy.

My DD was born in 2001, so a big year. DS Born in 2004 which seems to have quite a few but not as many as 2003 ! (all the sibs from the 2001 babies with a 2 yr gap...) But know that the 2002 birthdays were really low in our area. My local school, from which I live 200 yds the year DD started I was the last on the road to get in. The following year there were people on about 800 yds away that got in. And this year, it is back down to about 300-400yds.

Our local education authority (Herts.) publishes the data on how many applications there were for each primary school, but only retrospectively. Yours may do to. Ours is online, and can be freely accessed.

dd1 was a big school year 99/00 (millenium babies) 57 in her year but dd2 01/02 is in a class of 40 and 02/03 is smaller yet.Whole town is the same.

Yes, I have a few millemium baby-friends abd they all had school disasters! Will have a suss about on the LEA website, but wouldn't see anything quickly (so though mn might be easier!)
