DS, Year 5, no text book

Please forgive me if this topic may sound strange to you, but I am genuinely puzzled. I was educated abroad where children will have text books from day one in school. However, in UK, it seems there is no text books for children. DS is now year 5, he is doing fine in school. However as there is no text book and little homework, I have no idea what he has been learning in school, he did get his school work back at the end of term, so I got to know a bit what he has been doing for a whole year.

I wonder how other mums track their children study in school? If the child needs help for school work, how do you help without test book? Say, for a geography question, without a text book as guidance, how do you give the appropriate level of help?

You can go in and look at his work if you ask to. Or, you SHOULD be informed of the topics which they are studying each term. Often this is in the class newsletter...often the newsletter is online or it's offered in print form.

You ask how you offer help on a Geography question with no text book...well the child wouldn't be asking you for help if they had no book or homework...

So if your child asks you questions, you should Google it.

I know what you mean, the lack of books drives me crazy.

When DD does get homework (they get a topic and can answer it in any way they like) and she needs to research we get books from the library, the internet or encyclopaedia.

For maths and english we have workbooks and ipad apps where DD practices and especially in the Summer term I can see if she is able to go through most of it without help. And she also tells me if they haven't covered anything yet.

Also, we have two parent evenings and in Y3 we had separate meetings with her teacher, also in Y4 in the Spring term. Our school is happy to meet if parents have questions or concerns.

We have 'work-sharing' every half a term to look at exercise books.
We have a newsletter at the start of each term saying what will be studied.
To get the right level of info from google put 'KS2' in the search.
I pick up child friendly reference books from Oxfam too.

My daughter gets weekly photocopies home with the hwk on instead of a text book, so i can help in the same way i would with a text book.
