For all those who remember my dd1's rocky ride through primary school...

Okay, I'm not overly given to being soppy about my children's achievements, and generally quite happy to pass up class assemblies on the basis that if you've seen one Y3 assembly, you've seen them all.

But...

This is the dd1 who hated school, was lippy and cynical and used to tear up her praise notes on the rare occasions that she got them. And school didn't like her much either.

And...

One term into secondary school and she is the first person to get a Head's commendation (for clocking up a certain number of reward stickers and postcards according to the school's complicated motivation system). Her form teacher made her stand up during registration so the class could clap her. And she has just been chosen to sing the solo in Once in Royal David's City during the school carol concert. And she's so proud and happy.

I feel I've got my little girl back. Please do join me in a [proud] and moment.

I thank you.

Frogs, well done to your dd. I also had a dd who was unhappy at school. She's now changed schools and it's so nice to see her smiling about things again. Hope you're going to see her sing her solo

am bursting with pride for her.

Sounds like she was just waiting to be somewhere where there was no negative view of her. She's been able to 're-invent' herself as the lovely girl she obviously is.

Just a quick post-concert update she did fine! Bless her, she hadn't been to enough trad carol concerts to realise that if you're doing the solo in Once in Royal David's City you are the main event and you're going to be up first, all by yourself. She said she only clocked what was about to happen 2 minutes before she had to go on. But she went up and did it, albeit with the slightly fixed stare of the absolutely terrified. And it was fine not perfect, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of. I didn't cry, I was too busy holding my breath and hoping she could pull it off. But I did have a little sniffle once it was over.

Thanks for all your support! Berries, I remember posting on your thread about your dd, and I'm so glad to hear the move has worked out. The past term has been a real eye-opener for me. I'd tended to assume we'd have had the same problems anywhere, but I'm not so sure now. I think a lot of the change has been the move from primary to secondary, with all the attendant extra challenge and responsibility, but it has really shown me that the right school for the right child can make all the difference.

Oh fantastic Frogs! Well done to dd1 - what a star she is. She is obviously destined to shine in her new school . Maybe she just needed to be a fish in a bigger pond.

Ah, thanks Berries! It is so lovely when they're happy, isn't it? She told me over the weekend that she's had lots of people, including older girls and (gasp) 6th formers (!) coming up to her and saying, "You sang the solo in the concert, didn't you? You were really good", which says more about the atmosphere in the school than it does about her singing voice.
