GCSE Re-marking timescales

Well just as the title says really.

My Ds missed gaining a C grade in his maths GCSE by 3 points apparently. His school has written to ask his permission to enter it for a re- mark and I was wondering how long it would generally take to do this. He has immediately given written consent to the school and has now asked me when he will find out the new result.

So lovely mumsnetters has anyone here got any idea ?

Our exam officer reckons AQA eng lit will take about a week but his language remark with WJEC was sent on 2 Sept and not back. Would say it depends on the exam board and the subject. Maths and eng lang will be popular ones to be remarked so exam board will have more work.
Hope you get a C.
At least the wait won't be as long as the wait for the original results!!!

Has anyone's DC been refused a place in Sixth Form because they haven't got, say, a C in English or Maths or a B in their chosen A Level subject? Or made to do a different A Level?

I just wondered what, if anything, would happen if the required grade was achieved on a remark.

I wondered that actually so hopefully someone will answer. My DS missed out on a college place because he did fail his eng lang spectacularly. Our local college have accepted him on the same course so it's not been too bad.

Is there any point asking for a re-mark if you're 6 points short?

Report
Mostlyjustaluker · 11/09/2014 19:36

Edexcel say they will get a paper remarked within 30 days.

Sauvignon
bearing in mind that many exams are marked out of 300 and then proportioned down
he numeric error I heard about was more than 20 marks ie darn near 8%

Sauvignon
Have I missed something? Where does it say 6 points short?

The final date for submitting applications for remarks is 20/9; generally they are back in a few days. We have already had most of ours back. AQA are usually very fast, WJEC the slowest. Maths is usually very quick. Good luck to all your DC.

I think Sauvignon was asking a question on her behalf?

Report
ChillySundays · 11/09/2014 21:04

Sorry Sauvignon. If that is the case have you spoken to the teacher?
My son is 4 marks short of a C in eng lit and the school wouldn't pay for a remark so I have paid for two papers to be remarked (£65)
He was 1 mark off a C in another subject and the school have paid for that to be remarked.

DC had remark in maths it was back within a week. One mark of an A but did not change. sadly. Good luck with your son` s remark.

both the re marks I'm waiting on are essay papers
therefore I assume it will take a while

Leeds2 my son didn't miss out on his college place but he does have to continue with maths there in addition to his course. If he makes a C grade on his remark then it just means he won't have to continue with maths as well.

I was asking about my DS ChillySundays, he's failed it 3 times now, I was really hoping it would be 3rd time lucky. Sad He did well in his AS' though. I'll phone the SENCO on Monday and have a chat about it.

Report
ChillySundays · 12/09/2014 14:40

Certainly worth having a chat. Would say it also depend whether it is 6 marks on one paper or spread over several papers. Trying to get all the marks on one paper will be harder. If my son had passed his eng lang I wouldn't have bothered having the lit remarked. I am just hoping that if the lit is bumped up to a C then if he looks for a part time job then the lit exam may be considered instead of lit.
I would be guided by the teachers but at the end of the day if you want to pay then they can't refuse. Think deadline is 20 September

Thanks for that, have just had a chat with DS and quoted this thread to him. I've explained that I'm willing to pay and that the schools, quite rightly, won't be and he agreed that he's nothing to lose but wants to "handle it himself" and says he'll go to the exam office. I've told him the deadline.

Our re-mark forms have to be in by 16th, don't know if that is just our school though.

Report
Kimaroo · 12/09/2014 16:43

Meant to say, do they wait for them all to come in or handle them on an individual basis?

Report
SauvignonBlanche · 12/09/2014 16:46

Oh thanks Kimaroo, I'll hassle him to go on Monday, he wants a favour from me that won't be happening until he's done it.
DS had no interest and is very single-minded, due to his AS, and he's just not interested any more.

I'm re-reading some of my posts and cringing. Please forgive my repetition, missing words and general poor use of language.
I'm just coming round from an afternoon nap Blush have had 3 brain operations in the last 8 weeks and have been very poorly.

Report
ChillySundays · 12/09/2014 18:00

Kimaroo - they might have said 16th to avoid last minute panics.
As for when they send remarks off not sure whether each school is different. My son's papers the school have asked to remark were sent on 2 September and I paid for the other one on Wednesday and they said it would be sent off straight away

Report
Leeds2 · 12/09/2014 19:31

DD said she had an email from school today reminding them that any requests for remarks had to be in NOW! I'm sure it did specify a date, which I assume to be imminent, but DD isn't applying for any so didn't really remember.
