Long long story. My DD is due to take GCSE's in a few weeks. She has missed a lot of school and especially English. She has to do a controlled assessment on Parent / child relationships and poems by Jonson and scannell. She has received no tuition on this at all and has no access to her English teacher. Are there any websites that can help her? Or anyone got any hints on what she's to write?

It's act 1 sc 2

Act 3 sc4

Act 3 sc5

Thankyou, she's in such a panic about it all.

Have you been on BBC bite size? What exam board is she with?

Report

It's AQA

She's been given 2 lots of assessments to do today, neither of which has been explained and they both have to be in on Friday. One of them involves posting a questionnaire to a librarian in another town ! How on earth is she supposed to achieve this?

This sounds highly irregular OP. Has she brought these tasks home? They're not meant to take the work outside of the classroom.

Report
ravenAK · 30/04/2014 18:41

indeed - I was giving benefit of doubt that she was supposed to prep prior to completing under supervision at school!

KatieKaye · 30/04/2014 18:45

Did she speak to her teacher about the assignments before she came home? If she doesn't understand the homework, then it's her responsibility to make sure she knows what has to be done before leaving school.
What arrangements did you make for her to catch up on the work she's missed (I'm presuming because of severe illness) and what did she do to make up the ground?
I'm curious how she's missed more English than any other subject?

OP she needs way more clarification than it sounds like she's had and she needs to do it under controlled conditions in school. Can you phone the head of English and arrange? At my school if anyone misses a CA we have exam style "catch up" sessions where the kids sit and write the task after revising for it at home and then doing the notes sheet in class with their class teacher.

It seems strange that she has no access to the teacher but, failing that resource, what about her fellow pupils? Surely (at least) one of them will know what is expected.

Report
ravenAK · 30/04/2014 20:45

Not really senua - it'll be a CA the class sat months ago.

OP's dd missed it/them, & can attempt them under supervision in school at any time before Friday.

It's not routine Hw set for the whole class.

I don't mind emailing some ideas of what to write about, or a mini essay plan. I do need to know which play and whether this is for Lang/Lit or English, please. It sounds like the AQA Literature CA.

Or could be the combined English if it's two pieces - Poetry & Drama.

Report
LizzieVereker · 30/04/2014 20:58

Yes, it could be that, couldn't it? 'Tis a mystery...

which play? Presumably there are theme/s , plot or characters to be explored in reference to those scenes.

Sorry all I've been up to my eyes in Shakespeare ! She's doing Romeo and Juliet. Long long story but she's been permanently excluded and has to sit in a room on her own. She's been given some very rough notes on what she needs to do, it's about parent/ child relationships .

She's not allowed to mix with other students

Sorry to drip feed ( frazzled) she's missed loads of lessons in all subjects. The school said she would have access to her teachers but she hasn't. She was sent home the other day because there was no one to supervise her, I was furious. She had an in line maths session today but was sent out of the room so teachers could have a meeting, there was nowhere else for her to go so she missed the maths lesson.

Those scenes do make sense then, but she definitely doesn't have time to do a decent job of prepping by tomorrow.

Have a quick squizz at this?

www.markedbyteachers.com/gcse/english/how-is-the-relationship-between-lord-capulet-and-his-daughter-juliet-presented-dramatically-in-act-3-scene-5.html

Might give her some ideas - presumably the write-up under supervision is tomorrow? & she has to do the poetry essay too?

One of my students is in the same boat (albeit different tasks!).

She's been in the back of my lessons all today & I've been helping her in between teaching my timetabled classes.

Big ask for your dd to do the prep independently!

Doinmummy · 30/04/2014 22:16

Thanks Raven . It seems that she can do it at home. We've had a bash at it together tonight and think we've covered most of it.

The whole situation is rubbish TBH.

So sorry, raven. It doesn't sound like she is being properly supported in her learning by the school. But you sound like a great and involved mum. I do hope you can get some better arrangements in place for her.

She really isn't being supported at all. Ive written to the Board of Govenors but was told to have a meeting with the HT. We did, but his idea of what is happening is very different to the reality. Trouble is we're running out of time, exams start very soon.

Can you let us know which poems?
Find out exactly which CA for which exact GCSE. You should be able to see mark schemes online.
