Can't see the point in that book, seems all common sense. In any case, the parents who might need to read it aren't going to be the ones buying it.

I think it would be better to provide affordable quality daycare for all preschoolers, like they do in Scandinavian countries.

"I think it would be better to provide affordable quality daycare for all preschoolers, like they do in Scandinavian countries."

How is that better than talking to your own child about the world around them?

was referring to all the deficits the book reports on that school beginners now have.

my mum was a reception school teacher for years - whenever she was asked by incoming parents what they should do to prepare their kids for school her answer was ALWAYS "talk to them.

mil noticed a marked decline in the practical skills of her Reception class in her last years of teaching. It isn't up to the preschool playgroups to teach these skills alone, they are there to reinforce and support what is done in the home and provide a social context for learning through play. The fact that some haven't done any preschool sessions may be more unusual in recent years but isn't a problem the teachers won't have encountered before.

i agree with fiofio - my ds is still in reception but gets homework! he can't understand it, i blame ofstead. he is quite independent and doesn't need help with alot of things but personally i think teaching maths to a 4 year old is too much. i'll tell them where to stick their book

no, the school should teach these skills in the first year. Instead of launching straight into the National Homeworkfest b*y curriculum.
