Can anyone explain the NC levels to me?

DS is in Y1, he has an IEP as he is having SALT and has trouble concentrating.

As at March his NC levels were: Writing P8, Reading, 1c, Maths: 1c.

School seems relucant to let me see a scale of the NC levels, so I am not clear if he is making progress or not. Any help/sites you can point me to please?

School might be reluctant because NC levels aren't really properly tested until Year 2? So whatever you're at in Y1 doesn't mean very much? (and actually I've never heard of a Y1 child being assigned a level).

Anyway, Level 2 is expected of a Y2 child (at the end of the year), and the bands mean: 2c, "working towards" what's expected; 2b, what's expected; 2a, above what's expected. So all a bit vague - but extrapolating from that I suppose what they're saying in NC-speak about your ds is that he's "working towards" what's expected of a Y1 child, but needs a bit of help. Which seems about right, doesn't it?

Thanks Bink - it does seem about right but vague all the same; maybe I shouldn't be too concerned at this stage, I guess. Any idea what P8 means?

Thanks cat64 and christie, that makes sense. I'd assumed all the parents in the class were made aware of their child's NC level, but I understand then that it's only been made known to me because of his IEP.
