Curling Tongues.....

I think I have read that curling (into a straw sort of shape) your tongue is genetic....is this true? If dh and I can do it, does this mean that dd should be able to as well....? Or is not as simple as that? Please enlighten me, Iam busy trying to teach (for no other reason except that it is fun to see her try!) 2yr old dd at the moment but am not sure if maybe it is impossible!

Yes - it is hereditry, but I think that each of you could have a resessive gene for it so 3 out of 4 babies will and 1 wont

DD,DR,RD the dominant will curl
RR she wont

But tongue curling may not be linked to Dominant/recessive??

I think you need someone cleverer than me!!

Yes toungue curing is an inherited trait. And it seems to be dominant, which means that if you can do it you may have passed the trait onto your dd.

But as it is dominant you may carry one copy of the curing trait and one non curling gene, or two curling genes. If you carry only one copy then there is a 50:50 chance that you will pass the ability on. If you carry two copies you will pass it onto you dd. But, what about your dh/p? If he is a curler, then he can pass it on as well!

No, it used to be thought to be genetic, but there's now known to be far too high a rate of discordance in identical twins to support the idea. You'll just have to try and see I'm afraid!

Sorry to disagree with everyone, you all posted while I was typing!

I just read, that dh can curl.

Then the options are, if C= curl c=non curl

If you both carry one of each then there is a 3/4 chance she will be able to curl

If you carry two C (or your dh) then she will curl for sure.

Oh, bugger, that is a nice little class demo blown out of the water!

there are lots of other genetic interesting things....ear lobes and not ear lobes///

Sorry hmb! There's stuff about it here . Still, they're hardly likely to know, are they, so I wouldn't worry

But they like to stick their tongues out! It amuses them anyway as the question about RNA shows I like to get my facts right

Actually if it's any comfort I know a famous geneticist (well, as famous as they get) who knows fine well that it's not genetic but who still uses it in his lectures and TV appearances, so you'll not be alone

I didn't used to be able to do this. Didn't even know about it until I was at secondary school and we were doing genetics in biology and this was one of the genetic things we were told about along with earlobes etc. I couldn't do it, went home discovered that my mum and my brother could do it so spent the rest of the night teaching myself and now I can.

I can curl my tongue and i also taught myself how to twist it so the bottom of my tongue is touching my top teeth, twist it one way then the other. My friend at school could do it effortlessly, it took me months to get the hang of it, actually holding my tongue and twisting it round...cant have had anything better to do!

I must be a bit pi**ed because I read this thread and couldn't understand why it wasn't about electrical hair curling devices.

I'm the same as Linnet - I couldn't curl my tongue, but then taught myself to do it. Can't think why I wanted to though!
