Entrance test results -will we get actual numbers?

Found out yesterday that DD is in & she even has a scholarship! But just wondered if we will ever find out what marks she got? Is this something schools are open about at a later date or will we never know?

it varies from school to school. SOme keep them confidential and some will tell you. I guess you need to ask. Well done your dd though

I can't see the value in knowing. She's in, with a scholarship too. Why does it matter where in the rank order she is?

Not at all interested in her position relative to others, just thought it would be nice to know how she did. Did she do better at the English or Maths paper for example?

And if she did, what then? The school will assume you want to know her place in the rank order so it may be diplomatic to leave it alone.

It would be far more reasonable to ask that kind of question (which paper they did better in, or ask for any areas of weakness that you could be working on before the child starts) rather than what mark they got.

Our school doesn't give rank order or marks and I've never felt the slightest inclination to know. Because there's no good answer tbh.

I asked generally how dd got on and was simply told that her English was better and she would need to concentrate more on her maths, which was fine for me - useful to get an idea of what she may need to be working on.

Congratulations to your DD!

I'd be interested to know my DD's scores too but i haven't asked if we will find out. Don't want to appear too pushy before we have a letter confirming the offer of a place which was offered at the interview.

A girl my DD knows said she'd been told she'd scored A++ in the English paper. Is this likely to have happened or is she just making it up?

When ds got his choral scholarship we didn't get anything official but was told unofficially where he came.

It's a perfectly reasonable question. Just ask them. I intend to ask about DS, just to check how he fared in one particular paper as his confidence isn't great in that subject and it would be helpful to know either way.

It would be unreasonable of a school to automatically assume you are after bragging riughts or rank if you are not asking those questions. I doubt very much that they would!

Unlikely ime and what would it tell you out of context ? As they've awarded a scholarship she must be in top 20% or so . However do bear in mind that is only based on performance on the day. There will be a certain pressure to sustain that level and I know of at least one school which retested early in the academic year to identify those who may have been coached and those who may have underperformed.

Interested because the scholarship was awarded on her VR score (which I read as her potential) & it would be good to know if her Maths & English scores are in any way living up to that potential which was highly praised at her entrance to the prep. It would be very interesting to know if 4 years at prep have made any difference & if she is starting to show that potential in main subjects yet, or if she is still showing potential but not yet on Maths or English.
Maybe we'll find out more later anyway?

racingheart frankly I would have thought it entirely reasonable for the school to assume a parent asking these questions would be after bragging rights/ rank. The child in question has a scholarship to this particular school so very unlikely to need careful monitoring on any subject in order to keep up at this particular school. This 'potential' stuff is all rather intense. And the intensity could prove counterproductive tbh. If I was the HT I'd probably be telling the parent in question to chill.

If your DD has been at a prep for four years surely they have given you some clue as to whether she is fulfilling her potential or not? Don't they do ongoing assessments or send home reports? Really can't see how knowing her raw scores from one day would tell you anything like as much as the feedback you should be getting as a matter of course.

I must agree with the OP I too would like to know the marks my DC obtained in an entrance exam.
A number of posters on MN have DCs that take the 11+ to grammar schools and I believe they are all told their marks, as there are often comments about how they did better in the exam, than at home or that they got X marks and usually that would get them into a particular school. (I appreciate that knowing the marks helps parents decide whether to put particular school on their secondary schools forms.) However, why should the fact that the OP has a DD who has applied to an independent school not be allowed to know her DD's marks. So can I deduce from this that a parent can potentially brag about 11+ results but no other results!

IME the indies tell parents with scholarships rank order as they want to keep the custom. So I'm not sure at all about the indie v grammar tenor of your post. Bottom line here though is that OP has a DC with a scholarship. What else does she need to know?

I just think it is not unusual for a parent to want to know their DC's marks if they have taken an exam. I was merely pointing out that a number of 11+ areas give out the marks which is normal, but in this post a DC has won a scholarship to a different type of school and it was suggested that by requesting the marks that one could assume that the parent is after bragging rights/ rank etc. I just don't think that is a fair assumption. It might of course be true, but it is not necessarily the reason.
Yellowtip I think we maybe just need to agree to differ on our views on this point.

DS has asked me when he will get his scores from his entrance exams. I think that's a reflection of the fact his state primary gives them scores from their practice SATS and the colouring in of charts at the back of the Bond books. I've told him we probably won't get them (we don't even know if he's passed yet) but actually I'm now thinking it isn't such an unreasonable request.
