Has anyone heard from REEDS?

Has anyone any updates on how the boys got on at Reeds?

No. Think their letters go out around mid Feb unless you are called to a scholarship interview. (Not heard of anyone yet being asked to one of those either.)

They do their interviews on the day, so there's not that interim set of letters going out. And I think they tell everyone at once - no early rejections.

Thanks racingheart. My DS actually thinks he did well in this one so hoping for a scholarship call/letter. Probably being over optimistic.

That sounds promising. A Reeds scholarship is gold dust as they are sooo much more expensive than anywhere else. Lovely though...

Is Reeds so much more expensive because it includes a lot of 'extras' in the actual fees? So the next question is what sort of bill for extras is an average? Though I suspect that's like asking " how long is a piece of string.....?" Smile.

Reeds is expensive from year 9 when the fees suddenly shoot up. For years 7 and 8 they are pretty comparable to other schools. The main thing the fees include is food - breakfast and lunch and possibly even an evening meal, but not sure about the latter. KGS, for example, charges approx £250 a term for lunch.

I think there may also be one trip a year included in the fees but I can't see anything definitive about that on the website. In any event, I have no idea what the trip would cost if they charged for it separately. If it's a trip to the States or somewhere exotic, then it may be worth the money. It it's a UK trip, then maybe not so much Wink

Anyone heard about scholarship interviews yet? Someone must have one..........

Just re read the info given on the day and scholarship invites given out this week. Reeds is more expensive so we can only go here if we get a big scholarship :(

The end of year trip which is included in the fees varies from year to year; last year ds went to France (2 or 3 nights, trips to marine centres/theme parks included, he had a great time). This year it will probably be in the UK. Lunches are included, also ds has breakfast sometimes, and tea if he has a late match or evening activity. Boys in the 1st & 2nd year do 3 after-school activities (unless they have an out of school commitment like music or football club) one of which is that term's sport. These are included in the fees apart from ones like skiing or sailing which use outside facilities.

The bill for extras is definitely a case of how long is a piece of string! For example last term's extras (not including the bus or ds's sailing costs) came to under £40. That was for a trip to the National Theatre, a firework display and a replacement book. The school shop where they buy sweets, uniform and vital accoutrements like hockey gloves send bills separately, but they also issue forms where you can put down on account how much the boys are allowed to spend that term.

Letters should go out around 30th Jan and I heard that there were 200 boys taking the exam. Good luck waiting and with the results!

Does anyone know what their intake at 11+ is?

Report
JohnnyT · 22/01/2013 15:35

My DS sat the 11+ test and was pretty confident coming out of the test. For past experience that could mean anything, like skipping half the questions on a test. It sounds like calls to arrange potential academic scholarship interviews are made before Thursday (24th). Is that what everyone has heard? In any event we haven't heard anything either.

Have heard that letter should be sent out on 28th Jan. Sorry don't know anything about scholarships.

We've had 2 rejections so far both mainly because DS's maths is so weak. Now I'm starting to get really worried because I like the look of Reeds. Does anyone know if the boys have to attain across the whole range or would Reeds take a spiky result IYKWIM?

This is from the Reed's website:

The English and Maths Papers are based on the National Curriculum with applicants being expected to reach Level 5 Key Stage 2 standard - past papers are not available. The Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning tests are Multiple Choice papers by GL Assessment with applicants being expected to reach a minimum score of 105/140.

racingheart · 22/01/2013 20:25

That's 75% - a fairly high score if the Common Entrance pass rate is 65%. And yet they said no need to finish one of the papers when the boys sat it.

I talked with Reeds about a spiky profile and they seem fairly understanding. My DS is mildly dyslexic so his English scores were barely past 100/140 on standardised tests but Reeds said his NVR scores regularly at 140+ would be factored in. I didn't get the sense that a score of 100-105 on one section would disqualify anyone if the average was much higher. Hope that helps.

Thanks papa. Very excited. Not sure what it entails though. Think DS will need to brush up on his mental maths!

JohnnyT - how did you approach the school about your DS's spiky profile? I know that maths is our weakest subject but DS is great at literacy (gifted program here in the US) and verbal stuff. I don't know how to approach the school without looking desperate and making excuses for the maths Hmm.
Oh and were you looking at 11+ or 13+?

JohnnyT · 23/01/2013 15:39

Papa during a tour at Reeds I mentioned DS's strengths while trying to subtly bring up the spiky profile (stressing that he's better than he appears on paper, most would be cured by using a spell check program not a big deal in other words.) We were looking at 11+ although current school would rather he not leave until 13 (I can only imagine what DS's headmaster wrote - bit of a conflict of interest to say the least.)

Great job racingheart -- good luck on the scholarship!

Thanks for all the congratulations.
Fayerfield I don't think not hearing from Reeds is a bad thing. Don't they send out all the letters at once in mid Feb, same as RGS?

Thank you Fayerfield. Kind of you to remember. Just pulled him out of school in time to change the muddy trousers before we head up there! Think I'm more nervous than he is!

Oh papa,

So sorry to hear that. You and DS have had a really horrible time of it. Hopefully he's fine and you sort something out. There are many many other schools in this neck of the woods and one of them will be lucky enough to get your DS Smile
