And when you lose something, it's not "loose"

Although, I suppose in a sense, it is...

Can you borrow me a dictionary, so I can look it up myself?

And when you buy something and talk about it later you say you "bought" it. If I hear or see one more "brought" in this context I will...

Get more cross than I do at "10 items or less" lanes!

hunkermunker · 29/12/2005 20:49

Oh, bought and brought annoy me too! Where's Twiglett gone? She's pedant extraordinaire

motherinferior · 29/12/2005 20:50

And collective nouns TAKE THE SINGULAR. I've said it before, I know, but are we all listening? Huh?

Report
tamum · 29/12/2005 20:53

Actually, although I do try not to be pedantic, could I just mention appalling(yes)/appauling(no) too?

Bobbybob, my supermarket pet hate is "This till/gate/door is alarmed". Who's been scaring them all?

I got Bill Bryson's Troublesome Words for Christmas. One of the things he mentions is that it's incorrect to say "koala bears" - they are not bears, koala is sufficient. So when a contestant on Celebrity Mastermind answered the question with "koala bears" tonight and John Humphrys said "correct" I said "well...not precisely..."

My family now think I am even more anal than they thought I was before

Claim to fame: I was on the same course, same year at University with John Humphrys' daughter.

Killed the thread with my pedantry.

I can't do it with spelling but I am Uberpedant when it comes to science. We were in the car today and the outside was frosting up. Dd (8) said , 'look mum, the cold is making the water freeze' I couldn't stop myself, 'Not the cold, dear, but a lack of heat energy'

Even dh sighed and he is quite a pedant himself.

Moo - not quite! SepArate not sepErate...that's one of mine plus using less when fewer should be used. My 9 yr old corrected our next door neighbour the other day when she remarked that since she had one of her trees cut down there were a lot LESS leaves to clear up I could have died on the spot! DH has that Bill Bryson book and is devoted to Lyn Truss and her apostrophe wars. Maybe he and I need to make a New Year resolution to get a life?

myrrhthamoo · 29/12/2005 21:27

mb, dh is like that (science) and I'm artsy. Our poor kids!

Oh sepErate sets my teeth on edge. You get it on a lot of 'official' stuff too.

I remember a new chip shop opening near where I used to work - they had huge sign/shop frontage made - individual two foot high 'gold' letters...

THE BATERRED COD.

Put me right off my chips...

Yes, I've seen it on leaflets, websites etc - don't they proof read?! DH writes/e mails to complain! Bless him.
