Lunchtime clubs at school for Year 1.

Our newsletter home this week listed clubs that we could sign up our little for during lunchtimes. Things like, gym, drawing, sewing and french. I though the first 3 sound ok but french just seemed a bit much. My immediate reaction is that after a morning in the classroom, then 30 mins for lunch a child really needs a good run around the playground before the afternoon and if they were inside doing a club they would miss out on this free time plus the whole exercise thing. Are we stopping our children from exercising at an age when thats what they love to do and substituting it for a sit down task...I know it might be educational but at a time when we are all complaining that kids to get enough sport and outdoor time at school shouldnt we be supporting it more. Im really thinking about extra activities at the moment. DS is 5 1/2 and every tom dick and harry seems to be doing something out of school.

DS did french in reception (after school) lots of colouring, games etc. He loved it! DD will be doing french when she starts nursery aged 2!
I agree that the kids need their time to play, but they love their little clubs too.
The govt and OFSTED have said that a school that provides extra-curricular clubs provides a more rounded education. I agree to an extent, but in an infant school it does seem excessive.
I suppose with the winter coming up, all those wet-playtimes will be filled with fun activities

Are you sure it isn't something like La Jolie Ronde etc. They do that in dd's nursery its all dancing and action songs in French. it looked great fun when I saw them doing it one day.
