aww poor DS1. He came out of school today all happy and cheery because he'd got a "star" sticker in PE today (first PE lesson in his life).

However, when I tried to find out more about his day he refused to talk about it at all (well apart from telling me they did 'running'0(not like him at all). As soon as he said "running" and went quiet alarm bells started running. He's NOT the athletic type - when he 'races' with his best friend from nursery he's always MILES behind him (DH did 200 meteres and was hopeless at 100 and I only has sucess at cross country!).

After 1hr or so I asked again about his sticker and what he got it for. Asking if it was for trying hard or doing well. He told me it was for trying hard and then looked gloomy again.

Cue my very first - "as long as you try your hardest that's what's important".

I was tempted to expand on it saying how we're all good at different things (he's fantastic with computers for example) but don't think he's quite at the stage to fully comprehend that yet.

I had no idea that those sorts of talks would come so early in his school life

No, he's not too young for that talk, QoQ, poor lamb! Definitely build up what he is good at, it does help, he will understand - you could also mention that you don't get the applause when the things you are good at don't show as plainly as being good at running (like computers).

"Everybody is good at something" was one of my mantras when my kids were at primary (skating over the fact that some people are good at almost everything )

I may try if he gets like it again, but knowing his comprehension of anything he can't "see" in front of him I think I may confuse him even more - DH might be the one to try it LOL.

I'm "hoping" part of it was because he was tired - I'm sure DS2 must have kept him awake last night (playing with toys until 9.45 - grrr - in the dark I may add after being put to bed at 8!!) and he's not used to doing "lots" of running.
