How will you spend your child's first day at school?

I'm from Germany where it's customary to invite people round for the afternoon of the first school day, and/or to go out for a meal at night. Also, in Germany every child receives a large cone-shaped thing made out of cardboard which is filled to the brim with presents and sweets.\link{http://images.google.de/imgres?imgurl=www.spielhandlung.de/assets/big/Spiegelb8706.jpg&imgrefurl=www.spielhandlung.de/pd-1443768290.htm%3FcategoryId%3D152&h=300&w=300&sz=9&tbnid=8ZvbQvmNfE8J:&tbnh=111&tbnw=111&hl=de&start=8&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dschultuete%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Dde%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG \it looks like this}

I brought one back from Germany and have bought stuff today to fill it with. Spent a fortune!
Is it customary in this country to mark the day in any way?

We will probably take the dd's to Pizzahut on dd1's first day at school as well.

Sorry, totally messed up the link there!
Try again - a "Schultuete", as it is called, looks like this

dd1 has a Disney Princess one

wow- how fascinating, there is traditionally nothing to mark a child starting school, here.

I thought there wasn't - which I think is a real shame! I also wish I hadn't spent quite so much money today though

What counts as "1st day of school"? Dd started 3rd year today yet she's only 5.

Why is that, sansouci?

I like this idea. I am half German so can I adopt this tradition.? Where do I get a cone thing from? DS starts nursery/school in September.

You can only buy them in Germany, afaik, but is an explanation how to make one yourself

However, first day back at school met with joyous relief all round. good to see other mums, back into the routine, some time for myself, etc.

Didn't plan to get ds anything when he started last September but I ended up buying him a Bugs Bunny dvd and baked him a cake. Don't know why really but it filled the day. Cheered me up though.

DH has wanted to mark the occasion so he is taking ds1 away for a couple of days starting tomorrow. He's taking him back to his university town, to show him some of the places that he was taught in (and to also visit other momentous spots - such as where he got the scar on his knee from cycling into a car). Naturally ds1 is more eccited by this bit of family lore than by anything else he will see! They should have a good time though.

Taking ds2 to gymnastics class, home for ds3's sleep (and possibly ds2 if he's shattered enough and I can get away with it!)

If ds2 sleeps I'll work, if he doesn't I'll do stuff with him.

Afternoon will probably go to the park with ds2 and ds3 before picking up ds1.

Then it's off to gymnastics class for ds1 at 4pm.

It's not easing up for me just yet!!!
