Can a seller add on VAT after the auction has ended? I thought they couldn't but the seller swears that its within eBay rules.

Anyone help?

no idea, if you get no joy here you could email ebay themselves and they should tell you or do a search?
Doesn't sound right to me though!

yes it's within rules.

VAT is a legal obligation to pay if you are registered.
Ask for their registration number

They can add it in so it gets done automatically but it gets a bit messy with auctions

I asked for their VAT registration number and they got all arsey with me.

Oooh, just found this. Now should I report the seller?

If he won't give you the registration number then yes - are they high volume?

They do have to charge VAT if they are registered - from experience it's a pain to change older listings the wonderful cranky software barely works in general never mind coping with VAT as well.

All sellers should include VAT in the asking price (including auctions). As far as ebay are concerned it's fee circumvention. I would report it. Ebay like to get all their fees.

I know he has to charge VAT but according to that link he has to take it out of the final bid value. In his listing he says he charges 15% VAT on top of the bid after the auction.

Ooh, thanks sarahappymummy. Think DP will be pissed off though, he wants the van that the guy is selling and if he has to remove the listing he won't be able to get it.

Not allowed. It's fee circumvention - there was an awful ruckus when that policy first came in but I actually agree with it. I don't want to have to read the small print to find out that I've got to pay an extra 15% on top of what I thought I would have to pay. Any reasonable and honest seller will know about the policy. This one is trying it on. I would report it in very strong terms. Oh, and if he won't give you his VAT registration number it may be worth a call to HMRC.

Well I reported him so we'll see what eBay says about him not including VAT on the million quid he makes a year selling cars. Bet his will wish he wasn't arsey to me now.
