Quick Ebay question about refunds

I sold a pair of maternity trousers on Ebay for 99p. Buyer has emailed to say they should have been thrown away not resold as theya re very bobbly and stained down one leg. I described them as worn but in good condition with lots of wear left, which I believed to be true but have said he can have a refund if he returns them. What do ido about postage? Refund both our costs as well as the item cost?
I know these trousers are not as bad as he claims so am determined to have them back before giving a refund.
Any advice much appreciated

A buyer must return before getting a refund. Tell the buyer to return so that you can check them, then refund the full amount the buyer paid. If they are at fault, a good seller would refund the return postage too.

I would ask for a picture of the 'stain' just in case there is something you've missed. If it's not clear in the picture, or they can't do this, offer to have them returned. I would refund purchase price if they return and you deem them OK, or everything (their purchase price, P&P and return P&P at the rate that you charged them) if they are faulty.

Or, you could just offer to refund the 99p as a goodwill gesture, as it will probably cost you more in the longrun to pay for their return etc.

if they payed using paypal they would be responsible for paying for the return postage and you would have to refund the purchase price and postage costs but NOT the cost of the return postage

with any other payment method its really up to you I think

Thanks all, tbh he was a bit rude, which is why I'm sticking to my guns and asking for them back before I refund.
I'm not sure what he expected for 99p- I would still be wearing them if I was pg so they can't be as bad as he claims!
