Ok I want to bid on something but am totally new. (It's a pushchair) How do I start? How do I get it for the cheapest price? DOes anyone know anything about those programmes that swoop in at the last minute and bid for you?

you need to register first. You can put in your max. bid now and hope or use auctionsniper

thanks, with auctionsniper how do you stop it just placing your maximum bid is it clever enough to just bid 1p more than the last one?
D'you think I'll get cancelled if I havn't bid before?

I haven't used auctionsniper but it won't be able to bid in increments of 1p.
the list if bidding increments is here pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/bid-increments.html

Only a few sellers cancel bids from new ebayers, or ask you to email them first. If it's not mentioned in the listing you should be fine.

If you are new, remember to check payment methods accepted and account for the P&P in teh total cost.

good luck
