Can bidders see the highest bid now?

In ebay underneath the price it now says ' bid more than xxxx' - ebay used to be set up so that you didn't know what someone's highest bid was and therefore it was a bit like 'pot luck'.
Now it says bid more than xx - does that tell you what the highest bid currently is (even though it is always more than the current price) - and doesn't that rather defeat the object ?
Or am I monumentally missing something ??

no - it doesnt tell you the highest bid, it just seems to put bids into stages after a while, so it moves in 50p jumps etc

you can still be outbid even if you bid what it tells you to.
