Replacing car brake pads and discs..any idea of how much it should cost?

Have been quoted over £500...(shock!!!) Is this really how much it costs??

our discs were really expensive, in the hundreds, not as much as 5 though I don't think, but then again, it was £150 ish when we got the brake pads done separately, it's truly crap,

Cant you do them yourself??? My dh did ours (not a mechanic or car expert) and it cost us £20.00 to do both front breaks.

I think it depends if you go to a main dealer garage. Had my pads done before Christmas with a local mechanic and it cost £75. Not sure about costs of discs but sure it wouldn't be £500 with a local mechanic.

PS £75 included him sorting out blocked windscreen washer so in reality pads were actually less than that.

car is nissan almerho (sp?) tino..so a basic family car really..smaller than a people carrier but a bit (but only a bit) bigger than a normal car (like a scenic megane perhaps?) it was a 2nd hand car which is 5 yrs old (we do less than 12000/yr)...yes it was kwikfit...why?...sounds really fishy at being so much...we had a service today and our MOT was tomorrow (with them..they were going to do both for a discount). Ended up paying for service but cancelling MOT cause they were saying the brakes 'may or may not' pass the MOT (???surely they will or won't??) and said to be on the safe side, best to get the brakes done at over £500..which we've declined. Will have to take it somewhere else for MOT but wonder how much we should pay for brakes pads and discs if it turns out needing it?

You could buy the stuff then just pay to get it fitted at a local/backstreet garage.

Or, failing that, deffo take the car to a local/backstreet garage and get them to quote.

He would not trust KwikFit as far as he could throw them btw.

Our saab is due to have front and rear one done for about £550!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! arghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my Citroen C8 is going in tomorrow to have it's brakes done,and it will be around £400 apparently (main dealer)

our citroen is having new fron pads and disks and costing us £160. also having rear cylinders done at £140.

Learn to do it yourself! It's easy, it'll save you money, and you'll know that it's done properly.

Or buy the parts and go to a local garage.

Main Dealers buy the right to sell and service cars from the manufacturer. This is very expensive and must be paid back. So you'll be paying for the parts, the labour, the overheads AND the franchise costs. With a local garage, you won't have the franchise costs to pay. It'll stlll be pricey though...

Piffle that's about right for a main dealer but more than you need to pay. Find a local garage and get to know them, let them know they'll have your business if they treat you properly.

Or buy a Haynes manual and a set of overalls : )

socket set
spanners
a pair of slip joints
and also possobly a rear caliper wind back tool as you cant push the piston back on the rear calipers.

Also you pay for the product knowledge of the techie who does the work.

okay so latest update...cancelled the kwickfit MOT and we were suspicious that the servicing were being done by the same people and the servicing guy said we needed new brakes, etc (over £500).

Took it to another garage and while it failed its MOT because the driver's seatbelt is slightly frayed, it passed on brakes. In fact when I went to the MOT website, it only talks about failing if like the pads are under 1.5mm thickness. When I checked the service report, ours were 7.6mm, 5.7mm (nothing under this).

I'll never go to kwikfit again

Reputable local garage charged us about £110 to replace both front discs & pads, including labour. VW Polo.
