Valentine's day flowers

I never bothered that much with Valentine's day: okay, I've always made sure SWMBO has received a card, but apart from that, little else - at least not regularly.
But the ridicule I've received here for such "little consideration", meant that this year I made a real effort: did a three-course candlelit dinner with champagne (at short notice - was going out, but granny cried off at the last minute ), which (AFAICT) was well received, and a big bunch of roses (delivered). But where did I go wrong? The roses, whilst initially seeming very well received, now sit waterless and dying in a vase. What have (or haven't) I done? Should I bother with flowers in future?

Sounds like you went to a lot of trouble - if only they all did!!! I have to say I've always told dp not to bother with flowers on valentines as I think it's awful how much they ramp up the charges etc. We just do a card and dinner. Pop some more water in and they should be fine

We gave up doing anything for valentines after being horrendously ripped off a few years back. We decided we'd rather spend the other 364 days of the year being randomly romantic, which works really well....
After all, we all know what happened to St. Valentine

I love meals, and champagne and all manner of lovelyness but flowers are just one more thing to bloody look after.

Sorry. Flowers was all I got this year anyway.

Roses die after about 10 mins - carnations are better - they last for 15 weeks !!

(I told DH not to buy me any flowers this year - consequently he bought me - nothing - its the thought that counts)

plants will last for years though they are so romantic. i have a 99p yucca that is now 6ft

They're not, look - the lady in question's neglect of the flowers proves she has a similar attitude to mine, so, like me, she probably thinks of vegetation as food. Don't force plants on the poor woman. Get her a necklace if it has to last.
