Later to become a rival to Thomas Edison during the "War of Currents", in 1882 Tesla began work for the Edison Company in France.

Apologies for my tardiness. Childcare issues...

In 1887, Tesla founded the Tesla Electric Company. That year he filed patents for several AC powered inventions. The following year these patents were sold to the Westinghouse Corporation.

Oooh, just seen this pop up in active threads. I am watching this thread so weekly pictures of Tesla will brighten my Monday! Can we make requests? I would like an action shot of Tesla, prodding some electric with a stick or showing off his deathray prototype, something along those lines.

Deathray?

That's one to look forward to!

In 1893 Westinghouse was invited to electrify the World’s Columbian Exhibition using Tesla's AC power distribution system. Demonstrating the safety, reliability and efficiency of AC power, this was the beginning of the end for Edison's DC system.

This photograph shows Tesla's friend Mark Twain holding an electric bulb. Tesla is standing in the background.

I'm going to be working in Africa with a potentially dodgy internet connection for a few weeks. Could someone take over for a while please? Normal service will resume on the 25th of July.

Tesla showing off his 'magnifying transmitter'. As impressive as it looks, the lightning generated was set up for the picture, basically by flicking the power switch off and on.

Tesla: loves a show!

In Croatia near Gospic. We were on holiday in a crap town near there in rubbish weather & to go anywhere we had to drive on the road past his home town. They are very proud of their famous son.

The writing was on the wall for large scale public DC power from as early as 1893. This was an all round good thing, as it eventually stopped Edison publicly electrocuting (to death) horses, stray animals and a circus elephant named Topsy in order to demonstrate the dangers of alternating current. By now, Tesla was moving on to work on multiphase AC power systems.

This photo shows Nikola Tesla at a press conference in New York on his seventy ninth birthday in 1935. I'm feeling old this week, so Nikola can join me...

Just realised that he kind of reminds me of the keyboard player from, appropriately, Sparks.
