I was just looking down through the list of chats. Feminism/women's rights chats. Now there is an interesting heading. Is there such a thing as men's right?

I don't know, have you been turned down for a promotion twice, because you're a mother and the assumption is that you won't travel as much as your male counterpart (who has more children than you) to get the job done?

Even though you've brought in more gross profit than any of the male peers you work with, and put in more hours?

Have you ever found out that you've done exactly the same job as a woman, but that she was paid more, simply because she's a different gender to you?

Have you ever had to leave a job because your female manager found it ok to make personal comments about the size of your cock, and make you feel dirty?

No? Then perhaps you don't need to fight for any rights in relation to your gender equality.

Go and shit stir somewhere else.

No.

Well yes, but most of those rights are met or exceeded every day. So you don't have the same need to discuss them or fight for them, generally. I'm sure there are exceptions, but not many.

I didn't ask that question. My question was is there such a thing as men's right?
Are women discriminated against? In my work, no.. Quite the opposite in fact. Same work, same pay, same holidays. 12 months paid maternity leave. The list goes on. Can say what ever they want, where ever they want without fear of consequences. All they have to do is claim they were harassed or discriminated against and all is fine. Males on the other hand, now that's a different story altogether.

Biscuit Good luck.

Why would it be different for male employees if they were harrassed or discriminated against?
If everything else is the same, then that's equal, surely? Apart from the maternity leave which is partly down to the government, and partly biology.

OP your profile says that you live in Australia. Given that your prime minister has appointed one woman to his 19 strong cabinet, says that the right of women to withhold sex needs to be 'moderated' and is anti abortion do you really think that everything is great for women and there is no need for women's rights chat?

Men's rights? Get lost.

'says that the right of women to withhold sex needs to be 'moderated'

I find that unlikely. I would say that women have a right to withhold sex, and that men have a right to say 'Fine, then I'll fuck someone else'. And vice versa, naturally.

All those examples are from real situations that have happened in my career over the last 20 years. All in companies with equal opportunities policies.

Very big difference in having a law, and imposing a law to establish someone's rights and equalities.

Nice sweeping generalization that the rules will undoubtedly be broken by women to cry harassment for no reason though. Is there anything in the work rules that say "Men will not and cannot report harassment in the workplace" or have you come to the conclusion that this is a female rule because it tends to happen to more females?

One of my male members of staff was being embarrassingly sexually harangued in a leaving party and the girl was called in by me and warned. He didn't want to take it further than that, but he had my full support.

If you want further rights that you feel you are missing out then start campaigning officially, rather than from your armchair?

HTH

I like THECrumpetQueen's response. However, you can't have it both ways. If we are going to have women's rights then it naturally follows that we have men's right.
Sorry basgetti, but you also didn't answer my question. You made a comment about our federal government.
Please let me politely repeat my original question: "Is there such a thing as men's right?"
Some said I was shit stirring. And to a point I am. But it is a relevant question. I am not deny women's rights. My personal opinion is that the whole Feminism and women's rights movement came about coz a lot of us men were a bunch of pricks. That also is beside the point. I also have been known to be an overbearing old clot, just ask my wife.
Can we at least stick to the subject.

I didnt realise MN topics had to relate specifically to whether there is sexism in OP's office. Hmm

To answer your question. Yes there are mens rights. If there werent then men would have no rights. As they clearly do this proves there are mens rights.

TheCrumpetQueen · 18/11/2013 09:46

Men have never been disadvantaged like women; not able to vote, rape allowed in marriage, forced female circumcision, lower pay etc etc etc

So what rights do you need to fight for exactly?

What fucking planet are you on you Husbandplus3? Your company sounds great to work for but I am pretty sure it is in the minority, for fuck sake, it is still less than 100 years since women had the right to vote! It's less than 30 years since men lost the right to rape their wives!
Every day women across the world disenfranchised, humiliated, raped and assualted all in the name of "men's rights".
Go educate yourself or fuck off.

basgetti · 18/11/2013 09:51

So because there are campaigns and discussions surrounding women's rights then there has to automatically be men's rights too? Why? Did white people feel the need to campaign for 'white rights' during the civil rights movement just to make things 'fair'?

And the reason I referred to your government was because you seemed to suggest everything was hunky dory for women because of how they are treated in your office.

There are human rights that cover everybody, which theoretically should be equal although biology sometimes makes that a bit tricky. The concept of 'womens rights' probably came up because in a lot of instances men's human rights were being met whereas women's human rights weren't.

You're not being very clear though. What 'men's rights' in particular are you concerned about? Human rights? Rights that apply to men only (right to shave in the toilets, right to paternity leave, right to keep a penis beaker on your desk)?? Confused All you've put is a bit of a bitter rant about your workplace which makes it sound like you've been accused of sexual harrassment, and you feel this is unjustified. Can you give us some examples of what might constitute 'men's rights'?

Report
SecretNutellaFix · 18/11/2013 09:53

Mens rights have been the default since time began. Which is why equalities legislation had to be in place. Any one who whines what about mens rights must be as thick as pitch not to understand that simple fact.
