Hot house impasse

I am having constant battles with DW over the temperature of the house - based on the thermometer in DS's room, this is presently around 23-25 degrees. For me, this is hot. I would prefer it to be around 18-20 degrees, but DW insists that would be too cold, especially for DS who is 12 almost months.

I know that DW and SS feel the cold more than I do, but sometimes the temperature of the house is ridiculous, with the heating often being put on override even over the summer. I have suggested to DW and SS that if they are 'cold' at 20+ degrees, perhaps they could stop walking around in pants and a t-shirt and try adding a layer to see if that helps. However, this is apparently not an option as they feel they should be able to feel comfortable in their own home. I have a couple of problems with this: a) heating - unnecessary heating - costs money and b) that's all well and good for them BUT IT FEELS LIKE I AM MELTING.

DS isn't usually too bothered by the heat - I just open his window ajar if it feels too warm in his room or if he is visibly sweating. DS has never complained about being too cold in the house (this obviously does not surprise me). He has a cold at the moment though and is a teething, drooling, snotty mess in general. MiL (who babysits one day a week) is now asking DW whether me coming in from work to a massively stuffy 24 degree house and opening all of the windows is 'normal behaviour'... Also just found out that FiL has basically accused me (behind my back) of making DS ill by under-dressing him and keeping the house too cold.

23+ degrees is hot, right? It can't just be me, surely? I have considered super-gluing the heating override and thermostat to zero but maybe that's a little drastic...

Ho-hum.

I'm not a man but had to comment. Yes 23C is too hot. 18C is the ideal temperature for babies. I keep my house at 18C. You wear jumpers, fleeces and woolly socks in the winter, you only have tshirts on in the summer. Surely this is common sense? You have my sympathy. I hate hot houses.

Blimey that sounds unbearable to me. Too hot.

Whatdoido5 · 28/09/2013 17:52

I feel the cold. I cannot abide being cold. But I am currently wearing a pair of leggings. A pair of joggers. Fluffy socks and slippers. A vest top. Tshirt. And a hoodie. And I've lit the fire. And I have a blanket for once I've eateni wouldn't be complaining of I was in a tee and pants.

Get a room temperature guide thermometer - says, too cold, ideal, hot

rubyslippers · 28/09/2013 17:53

your heating bills must be very high

babies and young children can over heat more quickly than grown ups hence the advice to keep their rooms at around 18 - 19 degrees

Orangeanddemons · 28/09/2013 17:56

Hmm, I am cold at 18 degrees, just warming up at 21, and fine at about 23. There was someone on tv the other day, saying 22-23 is now normal inside a house. But, yes I am bloody cold at 18 degrees, and wearing layers doesn't seem to change much.

Yes 23 is super hot, well it is here - but I guess in some houses it feels chilly all the time however hot it says it is.

I never walk around naked in our house, it is a Victorian flat and never gets warm inside even in high summer.

We have our stat set to about 18, 20 at most and that was last year when I was a pregnant blob and unable to move.

It isn't your fault he has a cold. In fact having it too warm can dry the air and make his mucous membranes less efficient.

3boys3dogshelp · 28/09/2013 18:31

I thought the recommended temperature for a baby's room was 16-20c, higher than that increases the risk of cot death? Surely your dw must feel colder with temp set to 23c and a draught from the open window than at 20c?
I thought I was a cold person and our thermostat is set to 19c.

DameDeepRedBetty · 28/09/2013 18:33

I'd be stuffed up and full of snot too at that sort of temperature. Eewwgh!

NightNurse0463 · 28/09/2013 20:36

Thanks all, glad to hear I am not abnormal in any way. Not much I feel I can do about it now really, thank god it's starting to get (marginally) cooler...
