Mumsnet and Netmums

Now, after reading some threads on here (and being at home with my sick son)
I thought I'd have a look at Netmums.

They're pretty similar. NM seems a bit younger, a few more lolz, bubbs and LOs but pretty much the same.

So what's the issue?

Pretty lucky having two good sites for mothers there isn't one for fathers.

There are loads of sites aimed at parents. It just tends to be mothers who use them.

Also Grin at thinly-veiled insinuation that MNers are all old, there. 0/10.

Only a women would have taken it that way.

I could have written

'NM seems slightly less serious, perhaps even a lighter-weight website'

I'd have been accused of saying MNs were fatter.

I don't have a problem with NM, but I wouldn't go there as I don't like hunning and lolling and sparkly tickers and references to 'lil man.

I am glad that ther is a place where people can go and indulge their fondness for tickers.

Mumsnet has a far more intellectual/political element. Not making any value judgement about that but it seems, to me, a pretty huge and obvious difference.

I hate all the anti NM stuff that crops up on here in waves, to be honest i tend to think those who indulge in it would be better suited to NM, ironically enough.

Having said all that i think im missing the point op is trying to make. Will read on.

Re forums for dads, men post here but seems to me they rarely (relatively speaking) post about parentin issues. Fair enough of ourse, im less of a parenty poster myself, but i imagine this has somethin to do with the forums available. Supply and demand and all thst.

Dad here - been over at NMs over the years - am a NRP tho' dd lives very close by and I am grateful for any/most inputs re parenting. I have posted here loads of times re dd about HSC (which brought me here), her friendships, internet safety, homework, sexualised dressing from what I recall.

I think ( as in everything in life) it's a matter of taste. NMs appear to be 'clean' a bit unreal in the way I live my life and wish to interact. Sometimes MN gets pretty dire, but I'd rather a site which self-regualtes than having hte heavy hand of 'mummy' telling you whats ok and what isn't. Good thread Huansagain.

Having visited NM a couple of times I have to say I prefer it here. It's too pink and fluffy over there for my taste, and I can't swear for fuck's sake.

Don't like NM site. It's pink, fiddly, noisy and a tad like a radio station web page.
I don't know about not being able to swear but I like the freedom of thought and opinion that MN encourages.
I prefer it here.

I started off over at NM, then found MN, then dropped NM as I was having lots of fun here as well as some great advice re: dd and my separation from XP.

I did think NM was a blatant rip off. apart from the primness of it ( and the fact XP was on there somewhere ).

It does get my goat that they couldn't come up with a name that wasn't just MumsNet reversed. That kind of put my cynical side into the fore.

I do find certain elements of MN abit....er.. radical. Used to annoy me, now I find it highly entertaining.

Horses for courses I guess. A bit like Radio4 vs Capital.

The local bit on NM is far better than the mumsnet one, I wonder why.

Quite astonished that blokes are on NM, I would have thought it was far too pink and girly and restricted. Mind you I was talking to a work colleague who frequents a Liverpool football fan site, he said it was moderated and you couldn't swear. So they were talking about some footballer who swore at another and couldn't type the words. He was very jealous albeit a bit Hmm faced when I airily told him we could use fuck and cunt in very mild threads on innocent subjects on mumsnet.

For the first month I was on MN I actually thought I was on NetMums. I had read about NetMums in The Times and didnt realise I had accidentally joined the wrong site. Mild dyslexia has its benefits. Grin

Did try NetMums once I realised my mistake....ten minutes later I was back on MN.

MN and NetMums both have Dads on them. Just not all that many of them although more join all the time which is good. I suspect most Dads won't come and look though because they think its a site for women.

I used to be on netmums but the moderation policy started to really piss me off. After yet another "Goddd why r men such idiotts??!??! lol xxxx" thread and having my posts deleted for objecting, I flounced. And call me a pedant if you will but the atrocious spelling made my teeth itch and wading through all the banners and tickers ("My gawjus bubba is 1 year, 4 months, 1 week and four days old!" >puke

I too thought I was on Netmums for ages.

Our local NM is great for local stuff, but I never go on the coffee house I find it difficult to follow. Any text speak makes my brain hurt.

When I became a single-dad I read some of the NM posts.

I thought I was reading the bible, it was LO this and LO that.

Until I realized it stood for Little one, and then I was sick.

I joined both at the same time, I couldn't get to grips with all the netmums ticker tape stuff and to be perfectly honest I found the level of debate on here more informed and much more interesting.
Each to their own I suppose.

Who cares? NM or MN they are sources of support and advice for parents?

Use of the word LO or saying lil man, how awful Blush

I use Mumsnet much more but I don't really give a shit if people use netmums!

Silky, I like to think that all areas of mn are open to whoever wishes to post without being abusive.
