I am American, and I generally understood what it meant from context, but I wanted to know the dictionary definition, etymology, and whether it's considered slang. It's not generally used in the US.

Just looked up "fungible".

(especially of goods) being of such nature or kind as to be freely exchangeable or replaceable, in whole or in part, for another of like nature or kind.

It was in an economics article.
