Why does it say "Click here to start a new conversation in the $topicname section" at the top?

cos it is brand new and the thing that keeps track of the topic names hasn't caught up yet. It will in a few seconds (I hope).

Glad this has come up. Could anyone suggest a good place for an uneducated person to start when wanting to appreciate poetry? And what would be good to share with my children (3, 4, 9, 10 years) to initiate them into this unknown world of artistry? All ideas appreciated!

Thanks Tech, my nagging worked! I have a number of poems and quotes to post but haven't had time over the weekend, will get round to it this week.

hello! this could be a lovely dicussion zone thingy...
I can recommend a book 'A ring of Words:An anthology of poems for children', edited by Roger McGough. lovely poems & pictures for all ages. my ds is only 6 months old so far, and only into eating the books i try and read him, but before he was interested in chewing, I used to read him to sleep, lovely. If you're in london, muminamillion, then the Royal Festival Hall has a great lending libary of poems - tons for kids, and often good things going on. but just your local libary prob. has readings and many books to borrow. for kids, the sillier the poems, probably the better, and there's always Winnie-the-pooh!

Dd1 loves poetry, and reads it a lot, particularly Roger McGough, but also Roald Dahl (there's lots of poetry in his books). Anything with a rhythm and a rhyme really gets young children going.

I wrote a poem for dd2's birthday party last year (as a "let's calm down before tea" activity - will post it up here soon, it may amuse!

Thanks miaou (why do i have huge trouble spelling your name??) Looking forward to your poem! And thanks helsbelles. Will try to get that book, sounds ideal. Unfortunately, Im as about as far as I can get from London without getting on a plane - in Scotland. I'll have a scout round our library, although we must have the worst librarian in the world - I dont think she likes anyone actually taking books out! She is always growling at people. I would love to understand poetry better, we did not really learn any at school or, if we did, I must have slept through it. But I really want my children to develop an interest, so we will be watching this thread diligently!
