Who fancies a No Spend Day thread (like MSE forum's) ?

OhDearNigel Mon 31-Dec-12 13:27:59

I prefer MN to MSE but would like to do some NSDs in January. Anyone else interested in doing a support thread ? this is the idea

I have a shocking spending habit and i really, really need to curb it. So I am going to have a goal of 10 NSDs in January and aim to manage 3 in a row. That would be a massive achievement for me.

silverfrog Mon 31-Dec-12 13:31:11

sounds like a good idea to me.

I have all the basics sorted - meal plans, online food shop so not tempted by impulse purchases, but I too have a shocking 'bit here, bit there' spending habit.

10 NSDs sounds achievable - count me in.

citybranch Mon 31-Dec-12 18:11:39

This would be great, I sometimes read the MSE threads but, like you, prefer MN. I haven't a clue how many NSDs would be attainable for me but I'll start with 10 too and see how that goes.

January 1st should be an easy NSD as I'm working a NYE night shift tonight and will probably spend tomorrow sleeping!

PolkadotCircus Mon 31-Dec-12 18:48:48

Me,me,me!!!!!

Also like those long threads when you say what frugal things you've done each day.Never taken part but determined to this year.Like the way those threads spur people on.

I tried for 2012, failed miserably by March blush I too prefer MN to MSE!

Up for trying it again though, I'm awful for popping to the shops and thinking "Oh, that's only £2.50..." and that habit makes me spend what little money I have very quickly.

I'll try 10 NSDs for January too smile I'll start on Thursday, as tomorrow I'm travelling home and on Wednesday I need to bug my expedition providers about money they should have taken a month ago hmm

MushroomSoup Mon 31-Dec-12 19:09:27

I'm in! What are the rules?

Me, me, me!

I'll go for ten too - based purely on that being what everyone else is aiming for! grin

flossy101 Mon 31-Dec-12 19:27:45

I'm in! Will also aim for 10 days!

ZebraInHiding Mon 31-Dec-12 19:43:16

I'm in too. Am rubbish at keeping up with threads, but lurk and would love to hear people's frugal tip along the way to get them through a nsd. I will go for ten too!

ComradeJing Mon 31-Dec-12 23:19:32

I'm in! I hate the layout of MSE forum so never join probably very useful threads.

I'm going for 15 days. smile

MushroomSoup Mon 31-Dec-12 23:21:09

Tell me the rules!

Soup: essentially you have a No Spend Days target, and you just make sure that you don't spend any money for the amount of days for your target. 10NSDs is a nice starting number as it's no spending for 10 days in January, so roughly every third day will be an NSD.

Ruprekt Tue 01-Jan-13 01:06:14

Me too

MushroomSoup Tue 01-Jan-13 01:09:58

I'm in!

wools Tue 01-Jan-13 08:56:35

I'd love to give this a go too.

450fromPaddington Tue 01-Jan-13 08:58:11

Good idea. I'm interested too!

sounds good. we are trying to clear some debt so every little helps. will have to convince Dh though! I will go for 15 I think.

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe Tue 01-Jan-13 09:20:41

Me too!

Haven't spent anything yet today grin

hurricanewyn Tue 01-Jan-13 09:25:35

Can I join too?

I'll try for 10 this month too, see how I get on for the first month. I've read some of the threads on mse - are we going the same way, counting direct debits etc as spending?

noisytoys Tue 01-Jan-13 09:46:24

I've been doing NSD's for about a year now. It becomes so much if a habit I do more no spend days than spend days. It quickly opens your eyes to how much money is frittered away in dribs and drabs

bigkidsdidit Tue 01-Jan-13 10:49:54

I'm in! Aiming tO pay off my OD (£1600) before Dc2 arrives in June so this would be great

Another person in , we're sticking to a strict budget this year. Would like to clear some small debts we have and maybe start overpaying the mortgage. I am adament this is our year for straightening everything out .

GW297 Tue 01-Jan-13 11:04:55

I love NSDs!

PersuedByPenguins Tue 01-Jan-13 11:14:55

Oooh I'm in too, will also aim for 10 days! In fact I think I might 'diarise' them to keep me on the straight and narrow smile

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe Tue 01-Jan-13 11:40:47

I spent NYE setting a big spending spreadsheet blush so hopefully that will help us keep track.

We're aiming to clear our OD debt and also to go abroad on holiday this summer for our first ever family holiday.

silverfrog Tue 01-Jan-13 11:44:09

I'm about to fail on the first attempted day - need to g and buy some eggs as promised the dc we'd make a gingerbread house.

will have a think and a rummage and see whether I can make do with cupboard contents and varied recipe...

hurryup Tue 01-Jan-13 11:52:33

Me please, I'm starting 2013 as a sahm to 8 lovely children so am desperate to economise.

Shinyshoes1 Tue 01-Jan-13 11:55:59

I'm most definitely in .

Went out for Indian last night and it cost me £63.00 shock

I could definitely do with a few NSD's I'll aim for 15 of them this month

ComradeJing Tue 01-Jan-13 12:11:18

Good question ^ thread:

Are direct debits spend days?

MrsRandom78 Tue 01-Jan-13 12:15:26

Count me in! Reallllllly need to try and get finances in order this year hmm

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe Tue 01-Jan-13 12:16:26

I think it's up to you, but I'm going to count them, on the basis that it will encourage me to keep checking the bank account and be more conscious of our money (or lack thereof)

dyzzidi Tue 01-Jan-13 12:22:40

Ok I'm in I would like to go for 15 days. I work five days a week and get lunch provided at work so I think it's achievable as I go back to work on the seventh.

FleeBee Tue 01-Jan-13 12:49:12

I'd love to join in and will aim for 10 NSD today & tomorrow will be easy as staying at my parents & there is nothing here to spend on in the middle of nowhere!

hurricanewyn Tue 01-Jan-13 12:58:06

I had to go to the supermarket today to get food in, so will head into town in a bit - I need a new diary so I'll try to do my forseeable spending all together.

The diary should help me stay on track too.

StickEmWithThePointyEnd Tue 01-Jan-13 12:59:41

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 14:06:45

i'm having my first nsd today

I'm also having a first NSD today - this is because I'm ill in bed and I'm not going to buy the Celtic Sheepskin popper boots reduced by 30% in the sale

no i'm not, no i'm not .........

insancerre Tue 01-Jan-13 14:11:51

I'm in too.
10 NSD
continue with the 5/2 diet (have lapsed over xmas)
1 weekend in every month booze free
will make me fitter and richer
grin

VestaCurry Tue 01-Jan-13 14:12:06

Great idea, prefer to do it on MN too. I'm in. Will start with the 10 days.

Ruprekt Tue 01-Jan-13 16:12:30

Today is a NSD.

Had a lie in, went for a long walk with the family.

Soup and pizza for lunch.

Peaceful afternoon.

No spending money. grin

androbbob Tue 01-Jan-13 16:23:47

Count me in and I will aim for 10 NSD this month. Today is my first one on account that I have only been out as far as the bin today!! Doing a tidy up so can get all the kids presents away.

Back to work tomorrow and will try for another NSD then.

citybranch Tue 01-Jan-13 16:27:15

Having a NSD today. Got in from working all night at 10 am and went to bed. I take my 'spends' out every payday and try to live off this, it works quite well but am nearly always out of spends at the end of the month. Got paid a week ago and have spent a quarter of my 'spends' so will be trying to rein it in this week.

Working thurs, fri, sat do will attempt a packed lunch for two of these days. Induction at the gym on Thursday too so shouldn't need to spend there hopefully!

Happy new year everyone! Good luck!

tyaca Tue 01-Jan-13 17:38:20

I'm in! I like MSE a lot, and lurk there quite a lot but never post.

Comrade, re the direct debits, it's worth reading the MSE link on the first post. They basically say it's up to you. It appears that only the most hardcore include DDs and SOs in their calculations. There's a few other good tips there as well.

Can we include a list of targets and achieved like they do on MSE.

So Tyaca 10/2

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 17:46:04

I'm not including bills. They are part of our household expenditure and are immovable so as far as I am concerned cannot be counted as part of an NSD

Haven't left the house today - I live in Eastbourne town centre with shops all around me so it's far too easy to pop out to buy things or go out for a coffee. There is a coffee shop right opposite the alleyway that leads to our terrace !

tyaca Tue 01-Jan-13 17:52:59

OhDear, me neither re bills, though I do think TeWiz's idea of including them to encourage her to check her balance is a good idea.

BTW - that should obvs be

10/0 for me not 10/2 -

am happy to start a list with everyone's targets but don't want to get all bossy britches about it <<awaits permission>>

Booyhoo Tue 01-Jan-13 18:00:31

i'll join this thread!

i'm a bit of a hermit so am quite good at having no spend days but i'd like to make a proper effort at it as i'd really like to get some savings in the bank.

i've decided this year to buy all my electric, petrol and non-perishables on the first of every month. i also have all my DDs and S/O (including one for heating oil) set up to go on or around that date aswell. so hopefully i will just have to do a weekly shop for fruit, veg, milk, bread etc. i would like to buy a second chest freezer so i could buy bargain foods in bulk and freeze to mean even less spending throughout the month.

i would like to aim for 20 no spend days. for me i think that's quite acheiveable.

DillyTante Tue 01-Jan-13 18:01:17

Great idea!

flossy101 Tue 01-Jan-13 18:13:39

I've done a NSD today!

Went to a New Year's Day party and re gifted a nice bottle of wine. Me and DH doing no booze January so should help save a little too.

1/10 so far!

ComradeJing Tue 01-Jan-13 18:18:47

Tyaca I think a list of targets is a great idea.

0/15

snozzlemaid Tue 01-Jan-13 18:21:52

I'll join you. Think I'll aim for 10 as well and will not include direct debits.
Spent the day in having a massive post Christmas tidy up so today's my first NSD.

lorisparkle Tue 01-Jan-13 18:23:25

I like your idea booyhoo, I really struggled with ds3 when I tried the monthly shop but I have invested in the tesco pre pay delivery so can get a big shop delivered once a month and lots of tiny shops whenever I need them. we don't have room for a chest freezer but do have two fridge freezers so it might just work.smile

bigkidsdidit Tue 01-Jan-13 18:30:06

I've made it today smile

Need some maternity jeans and a new pair of shoes for work so will get them tomorrow

Exogenesis Tue 01-Jan-13 18:36:09

I'll join grin I think I will start at 10 and work from there. Did a NSD today sooooo only 9 more to go grin

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe Tue 01-Jan-13 18:43:09

NSD today! DH has joined in and told me he successfully swerved the shop today, I'm going tomorrow - DDs are going out, and I'm only buying what's on the list!

1/15

OWe3WiseKneeHairsOfOrientAre Tue 01-Jan-13 19:38:19

Can I join?
I'll aim for 10. Not succeeded today as I bought a coffee at work and something off Amazon.
I rarely physically buy anything apart from food and coffee, but online shopping is my downfall.
Maybe I should take the one- click capability off my Amazon app!

Booyhoo Tue 01-Jan-13 19:43:00

ooh forgot to say. i didn't go out today so no spending and as it's a bank holiday all my DDs and SOs will go tomorrow although, i'm not sure if i'm supposed to be counting those as they are unavoidable spends aren't they?

so 1/20 for me smile

QuinnFabray Tue 01-Jan-13 19:49:32

Marking my place.

ReinDearPrudence Tue 01-Jan-13 19:51:29

Not heard of these before, but it's a great idea. We nearly had one today, but we stopped for coffee during a walk.

Levantine Tue 01-Jan-13 20:05:25

I'be done one! Park and party for which I had already bought a bottle of wine

lorisparkle Tue 01-Jan-13 20:16:14

day 1 successfully achieved. only 14 to go!

0/10, as amazing as my eco astra is, it can't get from Brightlingsea to Brighton on the red lines so we needed to fill up.

DP also bought some chips from Pease Pottage services for us, which goes against the "Food from home only for the entirety of January" challenge we had set ourselves hmm Apparently that rule doesn't count on motorways hmmhmm So whilst I didn't personally spend today, both the car and the chips benefit me so I'm counting them!

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 20:26:10

Nearly 8.30pm and unless I buy something on the internet I have managed a whole day off on my own with DD without going into town, ordering a takeaway or buying something online.

Going to go for another day tomorrow as I'm back at work and will have the temptation to buy lunch from tesco express....going to make a packed lunch and actually eat it !

greensnail Tue 01-Jan-13 20:33:15

I'd like to try this as we're trying to concentrate on saving this year. I'll aim for 10, not including direct debits although it seems like a difficult aim at the moment. I seem to end up needing to top up with something most days. Today I've bought bread, milk, eggs and several books so will aim for a NSD tomorrow.

ThermalMittens Tue 01-Jan-13 20:38:14

How bad is it that ten NSDs sounds like a lot? I'm a terrible frittererer...

Thermal, you are among friends. How about trying 5 ?

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 20:47:45

sorry, pressed send too soon !

5 NSDs would give you one NSD per week as there are 5 weeks this month. Does that sound doable ?

PersuedByPenguins Tue 01-Jan-13 21:08:36

1/10 done! In fact I am in credit as I have just changed holiday plans (previously booked) and saved £100 in the process grin I will be spending tomorrow however, as I have to pay for slimming group (might even pay 6 in advance as I think you get 1 free if you do that) and buy a bottle of something which would appeal to a 21 year old (anybody know of any bargains?)

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 21:10:32

Shots are popular with that age group - what supermarkets do you have near you ?

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 21:14:48

2 for 8 bargain at Asda

Is it for a female or male ? Jagermeister is really popular at the moment, as are Sourzz, tequila, flavoured schnapps. Anything you can drink as a shot really !

OhDearNigel Tue 01-Jan-13 21:15:40

bugger, it didn't do the link properly - it's a deal on "Sidekick" - cream liqueur in a variety of flavours

PersuedByPenguins Tue 01-Jan-13 21:17:21

Thanks OhDearNigel! I have Asda, Morrison, Tesco and Sainsburys close by so plenty choice!

PersuedByPenguins Tue 01-Jan-13 21:17:40

Oh and its for a girl

MushroomSoup Tue 01-Jan-13 21:20:22

I just came on to say I'd managed today but I'm GUTTED to say that I fell for the 'mums net made me buy...' Thread - and ordered a haramaki from amazon!!!!!

NSD here for me smile I'll join in too and aim for 10 grin

nikcname Tue 01-Jan-13 21:34:18

Good idea! I gave up smoking yesterday so trying to stay away from shops, I'm used to popping to to grab cigarettes and just grabbing a 'few bits' along the way!
I had to do a food shop today, petrol tomorrow sad so 0/10 but will be on the wagon by Thurs!

Bullets Tue 01-Jan-13 21:36:56

Me too me too! I'll aim for 10 too

End of day one and..........I haven't spent anything so 1/10 it makes you more aware of necessary spends I think.

yggdrasil Wed 02-Jan-13 00:50:57

hmm want to do this but need to have a think. Basically we try to use the local shops and not use the car but this means we tend do a small food shop each day. If someone is passing the shop they always buy milk and a few bits. Its quite a rubbish shop (a very small Tescos) so there isn't much temptation there.

Would it work if I made dp or ds do the shopping? ;-)

Living Wed 02-Jan-13 05:25:55

I'll join too - been meaning to do this to curb my costa habit at work. I'm at 1/10 (for yesterday). Today won't be a NSD (weekly shop tonight).

hurricanewyn Wed 02-Jan-13 07:42:21

yggdrasil - what about putting aside the money for essentials one day a week? Say stick £20 into a jar for bread/milk etc & then that money was spent on the day it went into the jar, iyswim. I don't know about you, but it'd certainly help to make me more mindful of my daily spending if I had a small amount to streeetch like that.

Or if it's a tesco, you could buy a giftcard that you top up once a week/month.

I intend to do my busfares like this, otherwise I'll never get to work.

insancerre Wed 02-Jan-13 09:05:16

I managed my first NSD yesterday as I didn't leave the house all day

OhDearNigel Wed 02-Jan-13 09:06:58

yddrasil - I see no reason that that you couldn't do it as "No Non-essential Spend Day". So you could buy your food for the day but nothing else

OhDearNigel Wed 02-Jan-13 09:07:52

Trying another day today. Made a packed lunch for work for the first time in ages smile

VestaCurry Wed 02-Jan-13 09:11:34

1/10 from yesterday smile. Will be spending today though as I've ordered a carpet cleaner in the sales.

Mantra for 2013 : do we really need this?

Yes for the carpet cleaner.

silverfrog Wed 02-Jan-13 09:12:05

I am about to fail again <sigh>

To be fair, it will be an essential spend, as have toothache so need to see the dentist. But goes to show how tricky it can be.

Must do a stockcheck and see if we needs any bread/milk etc - if I'm going to have to spend today then I should try to clear the decks for tomorrow...

onthemetro Wed 02-Jan-13 09:12:21

Can I join? grin I planned on today being a NSD - am walking to work instead of catching the train (it's really not that far and will save me £3, it being cold outside is not an excuse!) and have a packed lunch, enough basics in the cupboards to last until I get paid in 2 weeks... All good so far, except my SIL's SD has downloaded some goddamn app on her phone on MY account, after I logged her in so she could download something I'd had...I feel so stupid, I knew it was a bad idea! Got the receipt today, so that's 1.49 down the drain when I have about £5 in my bank account sad

Anyway, will try again tomorrow. Pretty much have to anyway what with the dire state of my account! Gonna aim for at least 10 days

Living Wed 02-Jan-13 09:30:48

Hmm I think I'm going to have to have the weekly-food shop not count as a spend day (unless I spend on top). Have been spending most of today resisting buying as 'going shopping anything this evening so it can't be an NSD anyway'. smile

These dont work for me. Let me explain:

Day 1, SD. I buy everything I want.
Day 2, NSD. I find lots I want to buy, write a list, then buy it all tomorrow.
Day 3, SD. Buy everything I needed yesterday, plus more as Im in the shop anyway.

Continue.

grin

MirandaWest Wed 02-Jan-13 09:52:22

I like the idea of doing this. Don't think I'll include DDs as they go out and not much I can do to change them (ie yesterday's went out today so I still want to not spend today and if I view today as a day I've spent then I might as well go and spend more money iyswim).

PolkadotCircus Wed 02-Jan-13 09:52:41

Yesterday. I re gifted so did well.Today we are fruit and vegless. Resisting the urge to pick up a few things, trying to eek out the washing powder etc.Trying to stretch the last of the Xmas shop until Monday but the dc may well end up with scurvy!!!!

nkf Wed 02-Jan-13 09:57:36

10?! That is high. But I will try. I was going to go food shopping today but I won't because actually there is food in the house.

Thanks for the motivation.

I'm in! I like following MSE, but hate the layout of the threads- only 20 posts on a page, and no bookmarking!- so never join in. I bought a bus pass online yesterday, so that was a NSD out the window, but the next 13 weeks travel for £80 can't be sniffed at. Not going to go out today, could do with some milk but I'll try and manage without it.

If you put me down for 10 please, I'm going to try and kick ass on that target.

hurricanewyn Wed 02-Jan-13 10:13:43

Diary I bought yesterday is missing 3 months in the middle! Pfft.

I won't bring it back today, if I go into town I'll spend other money so I'll leave it till Friday. Hoping for a NSD today - DC are on holiday with their nan so I'll use the chance to tidy the house.

Shinyshoes1 Wed 02-Jan-13 10:28:35

Going to have turkey jambalaya with the last of the frozen turkey tonight, mac cheese tomorrow, fish fingers Friday, homemade pizza Sat along with the rest of the frozen veg.If I can just eek out the cupboards Sunday(lebkuchen pie anyone)then I'll be v chuffed with myself.Kids won't melt if they're banana less-they can work theirselves through the clementine mountain mouldering away in the lounge!!!!!

Washing powder could be the only fly in the ointment but all the school stuff is washed and ironed so it won't hurt us to make do.

paneer Wed 02-Jan-13 10:52:05

I am going to try this.

Yesterday was a NSD, and I think today as well as I am working. I hope tomorrow too!

Ooo can I join you all please?

DH and I have decided to try and have a no spend january as far as possible. Our cupoards and ches freezer are full to bursting (in case we got snowed in over xmas ha ha!) so we are only going to spend money on: fruit, veg, read and milk. I work full time and take packed lunches anyway so that should be easy.

So, I'll go for 10 NSDs but in reality hoping for more.

Didn't spend anything yesterday - went for a lovely long free walk and resisted the urge to take dd for a hot choc!

So, 1/10 so far smile

PolkadotCircus Wed 02-Jan-13 11:11:01

Just found some jacket pots so that's Sun sorted.Going to make choc/banana cake with the decaying choc santas and black bananas-fruit sorted!!!!!

mum23girlys Wed 02-Jan-13 11:22:41

Hi, can I join too? Me and dh had talked about doing this in the new year so hoping following this thread will help.

Aiming for 3 nsd's a week as we are super skint and want to try and stop having no money left by week 2! We always set budget but then something always comes up. Another thing we're guilty of is if we have a flush month where overtime has been plentiful then we just end up spending it all rather than sticking to our budget and leaving money in the bank for the lean months and other expenses like mot's etc.

So yesterday was nsd and hoping for today too. So 1/12

wools Wed 02-Jan-13 12:06:14

Well, a good start. Managed to spend absolutely nothing yesterday and won't be spending anything today either. I'll need to do a food top up tomorrow and will need to top up with petrol before the end of the week!!

TheSecondComing Wed 02-Jan-13 12:54:39

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

silverfrog Wed 02-Jan-13 12:59:12

today is back on track as the dentist couldn't fit me in until tomorrow.

so here's to NSD no.1 <tries hard to see a positive in this>

IamMummyhearmeROAR Wed 02-Jan-13 13:36:48

2 no spend days so far. Tomorrow I've promised the dds a trip to the cinema but they got £50 each birthday cash from aunties/ grannies and they are going to pay for a change with sweeties from the Selection Tin of Doom instead of pick and mix! Might be a bit stingy but I don't care really!

I guess I'll just have a couple of quid parking in town

Bought some loo roll today as housemate seems to have destroyed 4 rolls of it in the four days he's been here alone hmm Going to sort out other spending now so that tomorrow and Friday can be NSDs smile

babyicebean Wed 02-Jan-13 13:46:21

Can I join in please - am aiming for 15 days

Managed the first yesterday and am halfway to day 2

QuinnFabray Wed 02-Jan-13 13:50:04

Today will be my first no spend day. Haven't really got a goal, but 10 seems doable. 1/10

TinyDiamond Wed 02-Jan-13 13:51:51

I'm in too. tomorrow and today already NSDs. yes!

flossy101 Wed 02-Jan-13 14:15:56

Another NSD here for me, was supposed to be meeting a friend for coffee, but DS unwell so have stayed home. DH back to work today, sent him off with a packed lunch so no spend for him today either.

2/10

Shinyshoes1 Wed 02-Jan-13 14:47:31

Ran out of milk so sent ds2 to the shops for some so that's my nsd out of the window.

1/15

TinyDiamond Wed 02-Jan-13 15:38:15

I'm aiming for 15 BTW so I'm 2/15. I like seeing it written down like that. its going to be hard as today have enough for tonight's dinner/tomorrow's lunch in fridge+veg. then tomorrow breakfast and dinner from freezer. after that..... will be much harder eek.I also have a cheque and some cash to pay into bank but I will need to spend the bus fare to go and do that

TinyDiamond Wed 02-Jan-13 15:41:15

I just, whilst I was typing that last comment just made £200 on eBay. I think you lot are bringing me luck :-)

FleeBee Wed 02-Jan-13 17:32:27

I didn't spend anything yesterday. But now I have a dilemma. On Boxing Day I ordered stuff in the Next Sale on my mum's account - As Boxing Day is my birthday! As nothing had arrived my mum called & no ordered registered. Did it all online! So I've reordered. Technically it is spend from Boxing Day & it's also my birthday present so does that count as a NSD or not?
I'm definitely 1/10 as spent Nothing on 1st

Right I,m stil at 1/10 due to a drop in at sainsburys I needed only passata and a curry sauce, however I csme out with a 2.2kg gammon joint for a fiver instead of £10 dated 15th Jan, also the bedlinen was half price, I was planning to replace some old sheets at the end of the month so really I will have saved as it was a necessary spend. ([Blush] at state of old faded bedding)

ComradeJing Wed 02-Jan-13 18:20:20

Yay! First NSD for me. Going into the city tomorrow which will be a spend day.

1/15

hurricanewyn Wed 02-Jan-13 18:41:15

Ok 1/10 for me today. Hoping for number 2 tomorrow.

MirandaWest Wed 02-Jan-13 18:50:25

I used an Amazon gift certificate today so I don't feel that counted grin

theowlworrier Wed 02-Jan-13 20:12:11

ooh! Can I join in?? Have only just found this thread, so haven't had any yet, but I love the idea. We are really trying to save a lot of money in the next 6 months...!

citybranch Wed 02-Jan-13 20:36:51

I'm still on 1/10. Took the DCs to Kids AM at the cinema (£9 for 3 of us) and then spent £11 in Waitrose mainly on reduced bargains...a very large Xmas ham was £30 now £5! Will be great for sandwiches for work. Also got rolls, bread and scones at 10p a pack, and two bottles of beer at 50p each.

So although it was a spend day i'm pleased with the value for money I got overall. Aiming for a NSD tomorrow!

TeWiSavesTheDay Wed 02-Jan-13 20:41:20

I've namechanged just to confuse you Nigel wink (i'm still TeWi)

None today, bills have gone out and did a top up shop (only 4 things and stuck to list!)

Still 1/10

mum23girlys Wed 02-Jan-13 20:52:16

Thanks for adding me to the list ohdearNigel :-)

Managed a second nsd today. Unfortunately will need to spend tomorrow as we're low on bread and milk. Also needing fuel as sadly had a family loss today so will need to go visiting my dh's aunt tomorrow.

2/12

greensnail Wed 02-Jan-13 21:20:58

Hooray I've managed my first NSD today so I'm 1/10. It was my dds who kept me on the straight and narrow as I sorted out a load of stuff for the charity shop and was going to take it into town, which would have meant at least paying for parking, but they didn't want to go out so we stayed at home instead.

Tomorrow I will need bread and milk as well as a bus ticket to get to my friend's house. Friday I have an internet shop arriving and will need to take dd1 out to choose a cake and a few other bits for her birthday party so will aim for my next NSD on saturday.

androbbob Wed 02-Jan-13 21:36:00

Hooray here also! Managed another NSD mainly as was back in work and it piddled down all day so not inclined to go out of work at lunchtime! Went to the gym after work as well and then home for tea.

Will be a spend day tomorrow as need to get a birthday card and present for saturday. Will either get today or tomorrow.

Now on 2/10 NSD! Onwards and upwards!! Probably saved spending £8 to £10 on crap over the two days. Should put it in the savings acc really, but seeing as I am skint after Christmas, I could be putting my overdraft into savings, which is not the idea!!

GW297 Wed 02-Jan-13 22:22:09

I've managed 2 as well now. Very pleased! Hope I can keep it up!

WiseKneeHair Wed 02-Jan-13 22:28:11

I've name changed back from m Christmas name just to confuse ohnigel
Unfortunately, still on 0/10 as had to go on a 230 mile round trip to a funeral today. Did make a packed lunch to take with me though.
Oh, just remembered, wouldn't have been a NSD anyway as the I turner shop came. That does mean we have lots of food in now, so aiming for NSD for tomorrow and Friday.

Well done those who are on 2 already.

WiseKneeHair Wed 02-Jan-13 22:29:08

I turner shop?
Internet shop maybe. grin

VestaCurry Wed 02-Jan-13 22:36:56

Spent today, but planned so 1/2 for me, 9 left to achieve by end of month.

babyicebean Wed 02-Jan-13 22:55:12

Managed another day so its 2/15 - hopefully tomorrow will be another as need to start a costume for next weekend but friday may well be a spend day as will have to go and get lining for the skirt as its more see-through than i though

Billybubbles Thu 03-Jan-13 00:07:08

Please can I hop on board-I have only just seen this thread? I desperately need to clear approx 5000 pounds of debt so I am in for 10 NSD 'S a month please. I have to do a food shop tomorrow in Aldi and get some stuff in the chemist but after that I'm up for my first NSD.
Put me on the list please nigel if its not too latesmile.

Living Thu 03-Jan-13 06:22:49

Ok yesterday was very much not a NSD - improntu trip out for dinner probably against the whole ethos smile So I'm still 1/10.

I had to pay nursery fees this morning and am away tomorrow-Sunday with associated cab fares so really no hope of another NSD until 7 Jan sad

Good news is the weekly shop came to £70. Probably sounds like a lot to people on here but for us that's very good (and we're not in the UK).

insancerre Thu 03-Jan-13 08:55:21

Yesterday was a NSD too.
2/10

EleanorCuntBucket Thu 03-Jan-13 09:29:44

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Managed it yesterday, so 1/10 down! No chance today, run out of milk, fruit, veg...plenty of chocolate and onion ring crisps in the house though!

NSD for me yesterday so that's 2/10 so far. Today will not be one, I have to go to to town so it'll be lunch and coffee most likely!

hurricanewyn Thu 03-Jan-13 10:55:08

Another NSD planned here today, will update later (if I announce my intentions on here, I have to see them through).
MIL's cheque for Christmas presents has cleared so have £50 to spend grin

Torn between a haircut (haven't had one since October 2011 and def need one) & eyebrow wax, maybe a coffee out if there's change, or being a grown up and buying the slow cooker & electric knife I need badly.

Hmm...

Trying for nsd 2/10 today got loads of cleaning to do so not going anywhere, everyone keep up the good work.

PolkadotCircus Thu 03-Jan-13 14:22:41

Caved today.Went on a long, muddy (free) walk with friends, all of us covered in mud so popped into the Co-op for washing powder (couldn't face the small mountain of muddy clothes sitting there past today)and a couple of things that will see us through to Monday.

Kids sending their thank you letters tomorrow so will need to buy stamps,dp will need to get petrol so I'm 2/10 so far but will hopefully get another 2 under my belt Sat and Sun.

Going to do a weeks shop Monday and will see how far we get the following week, will be interesting.

wools Thu 03-Jan-13 14:39:34

I managed another NSD yesterday so 2/10 so far. I had to do a food shop today but hoping Friday, Saturday and Sunday will all be good days for me.

flossy101 Thu 03-Jan-13 16:01:09

Still on 2/10 as spent today.

£1.50 for baby group
£1.00 for coffee after group
£9.65 in tesco on veg and Victoria sponge

I am now on 2/10 NSDs. Yesterday was a failure as we had friends coming today so bought a large piece of beef (half price but still £10!) and a few other bargains at Sainsburys which totalled £33, then ordered a photobook of all our xmas pics (£14!) last night blush.

No spends today so far, as our friends stayed all day and the kids played, and I am now very tired so will watch a film in bed and have an early night.

Does anyone else have a really bad internet shopping habit? I'm so bad on an evening on ebay/amazon etc blush.

Keep up the good work everyone. Well done!

IamMummyhearmeROAR Thu 03-Jan-13 16:43:14

I've had 2 nsds but did badly today. Our Boots had loads of half price stuff left so I got my sister's and a friend's birthday gift for later in the year and my dds 2 teacher Christmas gifts- nothing over £5. Also stocked up on half price toiletries that we're running low on. Got half price cards and wrap in Oxfam. So quite a day but its my only foray into the sales and I think it was pretty practical. We started off with a cinema trip but it was the early bird special lol

nkf Thu 03-Jan-13 16:54:44

I've done one (yesterday.) Tomorrow will be one too. I am aiming to do one every other day.

snozzlemaid Thu 03-Jan-13 16:59:56

I've now done my second NSD! Fingers crossed this continues.
2/10

lorisparkle Thu 03-Jan-13 17:08:28

was doing really well. went to national trust property free because we have membership. dm bought me and boys lunch and boys bought themselves landscape trail with Christmas money. I resisted temptation to buy bits in the sale but then OJ way home bought oil for new sewing machine. I did resist all the goodies in hobbycraft though so a success all in all. still 1 out of 15 achieved though.

lorisparkle Thu 03-Jan-13 17:09:18

meant 'on' the way home' of coursegrin

hurricanewyn Thu 03-Jan-13 17:13:12

Second NSD here again. Tomorrow won't be as we need bits & pieces as well changing the stupid diary with missing months & extra other months. But I will be making a list. And sticking to it.

Saturday I'll be on a train all day & Sunday I'm going to a friends for lunch, so will keep out of the shops.

I might even exceed my target at this rate grin

2/10

silverfrog Thu 03-Jan-13 18:08:14

failed today, as expected, as had emergency dentist appt, so that's £70 gone (ouch) and more to come next week (even more ouch)

so still 1/10 for me

nkf Thu 03-Jan-13 18:28:30

Can I ask - do people hope they can get through without spending. Or plan?

I've decided to have set days. I know that if I hope to get through I will weaken. And once I weaken, it will be all over.

hurricanewyn Thu 03-Jan-13 18:38:46

I plan.

If I need something I see if IT'S can wait for a planned spending day to buy it. If so, great. If not, I try & bring forward a spending day.

I'm talking like I've loads of experience, but in my head that,s how it'll work.

My downfall is, needing a pint of milk but somehow ending up with £20 worth of other stuff. So if I avoid the shop it should help that.

First NSD today grin I didn't even spend money on my bosses behalf today wink Took the charges to the park, then scootered down to sealife where the Merlin Passes got us all in for free. I even resisted buying myself lunch and a tea at the park.

nkf: I'm planning my spending days based on what bills I have coming and expenses. I have a few big expenses coming up (Ofsted, DofE, swimming lessons, etc) so am planning to sort those on the same days that I'll be shopping or doing other activities next week, and I also have to go to town and get a pair of hiking boots next weekend so will shop then too rather than leaving it for another day! More NSDs for me then!

silverfrog Thu 03-Jan-13 18:42:35

I have no plan other than to stop the impulse, frivolous, unnecessary purchases.

so food/petrol/bills obv have to be paid, and thankfully I don't need to plan ahead/budget as to when these are done - I fill the car when it is empty, etc.

but I want to stop eg browsing the Book People sale and finding (yet) another book I need

and today, when I was mooching around the bookshop waiting for my prescription to be filled out, I resisted spending (even though today is already a 'fail' due to dentist/prescription)

really, I just need to be aware of how much I am frittering away, and this will help me with that

bigkidsdidit Thu 03-Jan-13 18:46:10

Not sure if I've had one or not - I haven't spent anything but that's because DH did a wee top up shop. Does that count confused

TinyDiamond Thu 03-Jan-13 18:53:10

not NSD for me today as had to get some bits from co op and a birthday present. I was quite frugal though and exchanged some euros I had back to £11 so that mostly offset my spending. still 2/15

lorisparkle Thu 03-Jan-13 19:02:35

I have definitely made a plan - whether it will work I don't know. the plan is get online shop delivered on Tues and Saturday. Tues is baby and toddlers so already a spending day. I have made a list of all items I usually buy so will do an audit before shopping. my biggest downfall is buying a sandwich when I work so I have bought some cup a soup. hopefully it will cut family budget but dh is a nightmare for spending.

androbbob Thu 03-Jan-13 19:49:51

My plan is to stop the frivolous silly spends- you know the £2 here and £3.50 there. Over the month they could easily add up to £49 or £50 or even more. I will also be more organised with the food shop and meal plan first before doing my online shop.

Today was a planned spend day as needed petrol and to get a present for a party dd is going to at the weekend. Already had a card.

Tomorrow is bacon butty day in work but that is my only planned spend. Hoping for NSD for Sat and then Tuesday. Like the suggestion of putting money in a jar for the odd pint of milk so spend is one day money put in jar. Will do this for milk and footie training fees for rest of month.

Also liking the sealed pot mentioned on MSE where you put money you didnt spend away and then leave until Christmas before breaking the pot open. Could pay for Christmas that way!!

WiseKneeHair Thu 03-Jan-13 20:10:51

First NSD for me. grin
Although I have been browsing the Amazon and John Lewis websites.
Must resist.
Aiming for another tomorrow, but will need petrol, milk and bread on Saturday.
Answering some of the posts ( on phone, so can't remember who)
I sort of have a plan i.e. get milk and petrol on the same day. I already meal plan and get an Internet shop on a Tuesday, so I know that will never be a NSD.
Yes, I also have a bad Internet shopping habit. I have the Amazon and EBay apps on my phone and its too easy to click and spend.
I have wondered the same about if DH buys something household/ grocery wise and unfortunately, I think I will have to include it. I'll have to make sure he only buys groceries on approved days.

Bullets Thu 03-Jan-13 20:39:13

NSD here today! We had some of DS's friends and mums over this morning and I used up the last of the Xmas chocolate biscuits on them, then SIL and DNiece popped in this afternoon for an hour.

Tea was leftover bolognaise from yesterday made into lasagne, Tesco finest roast potatoes out the freezer (leftover from Xmas too!) with ice cream and sprinkles for pudding. DH declared he'd "have gladly paid for all that in a restaurant"!!!

Working tmrw and need my pastry and hot choc fix at 11am so won't have another NSD until next week.

Hoping to make Tuesday and Thursdays our regular NSDs. Used to get our weekly online shop delivered Thursdays but switched to sundays before Xmas and it's working much better, plus means Thurs can be NSD grin

Bullets Thu 03-Jan-13 20:44:55

Also used up bread and milk today that I'd frozen in our chest freezer in the garage (again for Christmas!). Definitely going to stock up the freezer again on spending days to stop the inevitable last minue dashes to the corner shop for DS's milk before bedtime, and getting caught out by the "minimum £5 spend" for using a card to pay.

I'm also going to see if toddlers will let me pay for a whole term / half term upfront next week. I never have £1.50 in change so end up taking out a tenner then frittering it away on crap before the following week!

Bullets Thu 03-Jan-13 20:47:11

AND just remembered I bought all the birthday cards for the next two months last weekend when I was in town! It's like I knew this thread was coming!!!

Crikeyblimey Thu 03-Jan-13 21:00:14

Ooooh! I'll join in.

1st and 2nd were NSDs today I've done the online shop. Tomorrow should be another nsd. Sat won't as we are out with friend's for friend's birthday. Sunday will be.

My downfall will be next week as I'm back at work and am too lazy to make my lunch so usually buy a sandwich. I really need to make an effort and hopefully this thread will spur me on.

We have a strict budget atm as trying to save so I have already stopped most unnecessary spending.

Good luck all.

paneer Thu 03-Jan-13 21:16:20

I have done 3 NSD in a row!! I am very impressed with myself.

However, need to take some bits back to the shops tomorrow, so will be fighting off the temptation.

I have some alcohol left over from NYE, wonder if the supermarket will take it back...

FleeBee Thu 03-Jan-13 21:20:37

I've done rubbish today. But have booked DC2's birthday party & wangled 2 free places. Still 1/10. Still time to improve

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Thu 03-Jan-13 21:22:40

I've only just seen this thread, can I join?

We fritter away so much, I really need to take control of our spending and this should help stop the non essential stuff. Yy to popping in for bread or milk and spending £20 blush

No NSD so far. Aiming for the first on Sat.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Thu 03-Jan-13 21:23:08

Sorry, should add I'll aim for 10.

TeWiSavesTheDay Thu 03-Jan-13 21:33:29

I kind of have a plan.

I want weekly shop day to be the main spending day, so if I find myself think DD needs tights or whatever halfway through the week I have to wait until the main day to buy them - to help me decide if we could do without and to save on busfares.
with 1 midweek day allowed to do a top up shop for bread/milk/fruit but STICK TO THE LIST.
and one emergency midweek day if something comes up that really can't wait until the main shop. Or for DH and I to do something social if budget allows.

Paying in advance for babygroup is a good idea.

Bills again today so by my rules I am still 1/10 - feel like I'm doing well in terms of attitude change though.

Have got hold of a load of holiday brochures and am sticking pictures up all over the place as motivation! We will not fritter away our holiday!

Would of been a 2nd nsd but dh came in with a joint of pork, some lamb chops and some chicken fillets they had all been reduced to £1 in tesco.

OnTheBottomWithAStringOfTinsel Thu 03-Jan-13 22:34:23

OK I'm in too, lurked on Tues (which was a NSD by accident as I didn't leave the sofa!) and did a deliberate one yesterday. Had to get milk and bread this morning though.

Aiming for 10 - but by payday which is the 23rd. Am off till the 14th to study as I have exams so no trips to town should make it a bit easier. Then just before I go back to work I will make soups to bring in for lunches. I can eat all the crap left over from Christmas if I want a treat!

mum23girlys Thu 03-Jan-13 23:24:07

Had to get some food today but just a small basic shop as dh doesn't get paid till the 10th and we have only about £15 to last till then. Got plenty in freezer though.

So today was £15 in Aldi and £4 in Sainsbos. Hoping for a nsd tomorrow.

2/12

missbennett Fri 04-Jan-13 00:21:32

I'd like to join in, please, if I may? Have been reading the thread but only just got a moment to collect my thoughts and post.

I really need to have 31 NSDs this month as, due to the way my contracts are paid, I was a week 'light' at the end of Dec. Jan was always going to be tight but now it's really really tight and I can't even pay all the bills sad. So there will be a knock on for the next few months as I get straight again, though I've picked up a bit more work which will help. Plus I've some debts I need to try and clear - got arrangements in place but would be nice to try and clear some sooner.

Anyway, January is about survival. I am trying to manage on £100 per week to cover fuel, food, incidentals. It should be doable. But it would still be good not to use it all. This week I have been very lucky as my mum is still staying after Christmas and she insisted on buying some groceries - I didn't refuse blush. So the month so far:
1st- NSD
2nd -train fare to work (£4.80 but means a £5 saving on petrol + parking!) and had to tax the car - £75.00
today- work in car as needed there and had to buy petrol, milk and bread. But got petrol for next week (my week goes Fri - Fri) out of this week's allowance so am a little bit ahead smile

So does it count for things like train fare to work? Or is it a NSD if I only pay for fare and nothing else, no coffees etc?

Weekend might be a bit expensive as have got to get DD1 back to uni and drop mum off on way, it's a 2 hour-ish trip, got the petrol but will likely need a coffee stop. But after that, it will be back to being me and DD2 - is a huge difference between housekeeping for 4 and housekeeping for 2, so might need even less each week - fingers crossed anyway!

Am going to aim for 12 NSDs - so far I think I have achieved 1!

MrsShrek3 Fri 04-Jan-13 00:24:32

have lurked and read but now wondering if I could join you please?

MrsShrek3 Fri 04-Jan-13 00:29:06

have had NSDs for 2013 so far. mainly owing to having paid three large bills recently (between Christmas and new yr) and having around a fiver in the bank til tomorrowblush

PartTimeModel Fri 04-Jan-13 00:38:55

This sounds fantastic!! I'll aim for 10 in Jan but tomorrow I need to buy a car and necessary bits to go with.

Which Is why I need to do NSD's grin

VestaCurry Fri 04-Jan-13 00:46:09

NSD yesterday so 2/3 so far.

Billybubbles Fri 04-Jan-13 01:09:12

Well did a big shop in aldi today, went to chemist and then popped to tescos for a couple of bits that aldi dont have and spent 35poundsshock.This is exactly what i need to stop doing....going in for one thing and spending a fortune.
I am going to put milk and paper money in a jar every week because these are things i get every day and will be my downfall.so if i can dip inthe jar for these ill be ok..hopefully.
So tomorrow will be get milk and paper and sort out jar and i should be up and running and ready to go with first nsd on saturday.

GW297 Fri 04-Jan-13 10:10:52

If done 3 now but only because I had to wait in all day for a parcel! Will be spending money today though as need milk and meeting a friend for lunch and another for coffee!

Definitely not going to be a nsd today as its shop day and I have a pr of shoe boots to pick upbthat I had ordered before I joined this thread.

hurricanewyn Fri 04-Jan-13 10:53:05

Morning all
Planned spend today. Will be super tight & get the free bus from Sainsburys into town though.
So I'll stay at 2/10 today.

MirandaWest Fri 04-Jan-13 10:53:08

Had NSD yesterday and the day before. Went to morrisons today but this was very necessary grin

silverfrog Fri 04-Jan-13 10:56:21

I'm hoping for a nsd today, but will see how it pans out. the dds (dd1 - severe ASD - in particular) are going a bit stir crazy.

dd1's favourite thing in the world is going to the supermarket hmm. would only need to buy some bananas or something small, but would prefer not to.

am not really up to dealing with the constant nagging, though, due to toothache, so may capitulate...

bigkidsdidit Fri 04-Jan-13 14:28:40

I'm shaping up for my 3rd in a row! 3/15!

this is a bit of a cheat though, I'm working at home yesterday, today and tomorrwo procrastinating wildly writing a paper and we don't have shops in walking distance. DH and DS did the little shop yesterday and are off to a farm adn cafe today so it feels a bit odd counting these days (as the family spent money, IYSWIM)

anyway, I'm pleased smile my subs to my professional body come out next week, £175 sad

bigkidsdidit Fri 04-Jan-13 14:29:36

blimey today is actually my 4th shock

4/15!

hurricanewyn Fri 04-Jan-13 14:31:31

You're doing well bigkids

bigkidsdidit Fri 04-Jan-13 14:39:59

it's not normal!

Shinyshoes1 Fri 04-Jan-13 16:23:37

Still 1/15

I has to buy milk again today and have to stock up tomorrow and have no fruit in some having a nsd is out if the question

I'm aiming for a nsd Sunday which should be pretty easy as I don't leave the house Sunday's and should have enough in so I don't need to send the children out for supplies

flossy101 Fri 04-Jan-13 16:54:33

Still on 2/10 as paid my next account off, cancelled the thing too as far too easy and tempting for me to spend. Hoping for a non spend day tomorrow, but it's always harder at the weekend I find.

TeWiSavesTheDay Fri 04-Jan-13 17:00:12

NSD! Found some christmas treat food leftovers to take on playdate instead of buying biscuits.

2/10

oopsadaisymaisy Fri 04-Jan-13 17:36:00

Can I join please. I'm so useless with money and my boiler broke a few days before Xmas and I'm completely broke. I ve had 2 days free of spending so far. I ve only used the car once this week out of necessity, ds activity too far to walk to. I'm hoping the weather holds out so I can cycle to work next week. I be got major outgoings in Feb so I ll need a no spend Feb too.

silverfrog Fri 04-Jan-13 17:37:53

Managed another nsd, so 2/10 for me.

Tomorrow won't be, as we have dd1's OT session, so will try for Sunday for next one.

lorisparkle Fri 04-Jan-13 17:38:32

I'm on 2/15 now and hopefully tomorrow will make 3 as we are off to my mum's. I am very impressed by the 4 bigkidsdidit.

Booyhoo Fri 04-Jan-13 17:54:19

forgot to post here wednesday and yesterday!

didn't spend anything on wednesday, did massive food shop yesterday and got myself and dcs some clothes in the asda sale. i never buy myself clothes but this is the first year i haven't really needed the money my mum gave me for xmas so i thought i'd get something nice with it. haven't spent anything today either and wont be leaving the house so dont expect to tonight.

3/20

Booyhoo Fri 04-Jan-13 17:59:07

"I want weekly shop day to be the main spending day, so if I find myself think DD needs tights or whatever halfway through the week I have to wait until the main day to buy them "

i try and do this too.

ds has scouts on monday evenings so i try to get to asda during that hour and get the groceries in as it means only using the car once and hopefully walking everywhere the rest of the week. all the other shops are closed though but the dcs both go to their gran's every other monday afternoon so i get to the shops downtown during those couple of hours meaning my spending is still all on a monday. it makes planning my shopping out easier aswell as i know what time i have and what i need to get instead of nipping down every other day for something and towing the dcs with me and them wanting sweets hmm grin

NSD number 2 for me providing we don't have to go out to get carrots for dinner! I even resisted the temptation to buy myself some chips when my boss asked me to go get some for one of the kids (he's only allowed plain food today thanks to treatment this morning, I've had an unimpressed 4yo all afternoon!) and I really think I deserve a chip butty after this afto! But no, I get a dauphinoise instead if DP gets off his backside to make it, otherwise I'm making pasta I'm actually gutted about that!

Tomorrow will be a spending day, the shop I'm buying my hiking boots called to say that they have the ones I wanted to try on in and ready for me to buy grin As I'm in town anyway for a 10mile walk I may as well go after my walk! Hopefully Lush would have had their bloody delivery too so that I can pick up my face wash without having to make another trip for it next week hmm

TinyDiamond Fri 04-Jan-13 18:49:14

still on 2/15 today as had to spend £1.70 on bus fare. hoping for nsd tomorrow though

ComradeJing Fri 04-Jan-13 20:23:53

1/15

I knew the start of the month would be busy here. Sdc are staying and were doing house projects. Hoping today will be a NSD.

Weekly food shop today so still on 2/10 but hoping for a NSD tomorrow smile

mum23girlys Fri 04-Jan-13 21:39:12

Well done everyone!

Nsd here today. Mainly because I spent the whole day clearing out and getting stuff ready to list on facebook selling page. Have sold an exercise machine already so that's £15 coming my way this weekend.

Will need to spend tomorrow as I've booked to get mine and the girls hair cut with my Christmas money. Also older dds have dancing so will need fuel to get there and a coffee to keep me sane whilst I wait for them smile

3/12

FleeBee Fri 04-Jan-13 21:41:47

I didn't manage it today. Met a guiding colleague at soft play to plan our new term so had to pay for my DCs to play. Still on 1/10

poorpaws Fri 04-Jan-13 21:57:58

I'll try too. I have a low income and a credit card debt so I need nsds. Never done this before so we'll see.

nkf Fri 04-Jan-13 23:03:59

Nsd 2 here.

MrsShrek3 Fri 04-Jan-13 23:29:13

I have done 3 NSDs and I'm saving for holiday spend for a.weekend away at the start of Feb... had to do supermarket shopping today (after three days of nothing we had bare cupboards...) tomorrow is ds1s birthday treat so £24 which is a prebooked bargain for the activity he's doing smile
Sunday will be nsd 4. can't decide whether to aim for 10 or 15...would it be bizarre to go for 12 NSDs instead? confused 15 is tempting mind. views welcome...

well done everyone, doing good so far smile

missbennett Sat 05-Jan-13 00:02:43

Still on 1/12. But v minimal spending today - birthday card for DD1 and cup of coffee for me and mum at the market - v cheap - 50p each - I know how to push the boat out wink, then £10.50 on my veggie box and I got cash out for the week ahead. Tomorrow meeting a friend for a coffee - a luxury I know but a v good friend I haven't seen for ages and she helps keep me sane, especially when life is stressful smile so will do me good. Sunday will be a write off I expect due to travelling, but should do better come Monday.........

Booyhoo Sat 05-Jan-13 00:21:02

mrsShreK

if you want a challenge go for 15 but only as long as you aren't the type to beat yourself up if you dont reach 15. if you want to definitely succeed, go for 10. smile

MrsShrek3 Sat 05-Jan-13 00:36:04

Thanks Boo - Im going to hit the challenge for 15 but I'm stupidly competitive Will convince myself that anything above 12 is a winner wink
thanks for replysmile

AViewfromtheFridge Sat 05-Jan-13 00:51:26

Im going to hit the challenge for 15 but I'm stupidly competitive Will convince myself that anything above 12 is a winner

^This!

Could I join please? Haven't spent anything today, so 1/4 so far!

Booyhoo Sat 05-Jan-13 01:09:58

good luck mrsS

i'd be in the 'beat myself up' category grin

aView are you only going for 4 no spending days this month?

IamMummyhearmeROAR Sat 05-Jan-13 09:59:14

3/10 here!

Not sure what the weekend will bring. Will need a tank of fuel that's for sure. Might con dh into doing that for me if I loan him my car on my non working days. He needs to keep his mileage down.

wools Sat 05-Jan-13 10:18:15

Spent £12 in Waitrose which wasn't really necessary so a bit annoyed with myself. Hoping to take a dress back today which I bought before Christmas so hopefully putting money back in the coffers and making up for yesterday's blip. 2/10 for me so far!!

ComradeJing Sat 05-Jan-13 10:29:06

Another spend day here hmm. Setting up a house is crap for NSDs and I was a tad daft to go for 15.

Sticking to my budget though so doing ok.

1/15

hurricanewyn Sat 05-Jan-13 10:32:07

Was supposed to be 3/10 for me today, but I forgot about getting home from the station with two DCs & an enormous suitcase as well as whatever assorted things they've gotten while away.

It's only 1 mile from the train station to home, but I don't think we'll walk - I want to be more careful with money, but not a martyr!

Viviennemary Sat 05-Jan-13 10:34:20

I think I'll give this a go. But would it not mean that you just spend more on the NSD's. And I suppose buying things online counts does it.

Viviennemary Sat 05-Jan-13 10:35:12

I meant on the spend days. I can see I'm going to be great at this! grin

Morning all. Some people are doing so well (4 NSDs already! shock)

Yesterday was almost a NSD but not quite. We are doing well eating up left overs but had to send DH to the shop for bread, milk and butter (£6.66) so though I'd buy my vitamin tablets online or I'll only have to spend on them another day next week so another £3.20. Not bad though at less than £10 and most importantly NO unneeded spending smile.

Not sure about today as don't know what we have planned. Back at work/nursery on Monday.

So, still on 2/10 here.

Ps I have been recording any NSDs on our family calendar, which is motivating for me.

AViewfromtheFridge Sat 05-Jan-13 11:42:21

Oh, sorry, no - misunderstood! I'm going for fifteen, so 1/15.

Spent yesterday, but no spending planned for today. Doing well so far, as we haven't got out of bed yet grin

Booyhoo Sat 05-Jan-13 14:47:41

grin i thought so view

no spends today for me and i dont expect there to be any. dcs are with their dad til after dinner and i have soup and beans and bacon and pasta so i'll find something to eat. it really makes a difference to have done the big grocery shop and have everything in for (hopefully) another week at least.

Booyhoo Sat 05-Jan-13 14:48:14

oops 4/20

oopsadaisymaisy Sat 05-Jan-13 14:59:29

I spent 20 today, I only managed 2 days. I'm rubbish at this!

lorisparkle Sat 05-Jan-13 15:18:13

it will be a nsd today making it 3/15 hoping for another tomorrow.
I did a 'food audit' last night. how sad! I have compiled a list of everything we usually buy at supermarkets then rummaged at back of cupboards and fridges to see what we have. next I am going to do a weekly food plan using what we have got. can't imagine this level of organisation will last long.

snozzlemaid Sat 05-Jan-13 17:08:30

Managed another nsd here, we just went out for a long walk this afternoon so no temptation to spend. Hopefully will have another tomorrow as I think we'll just be at home with dcs finishing homework etc ready for school on Monday.
So at the moment I'm on 3/10.

insancerre Sat 05-Jan-13 17:10:58

well done everyone
now on 3/10
go me!

PolkadotCircus Sat 05-Jan-13 17:17:59

3/10 for me too.Today was a killer though.Really missed my Sat Guardian and soooo wanted a fresh baguette for lunch!

bigkidsdidit Sat 05-Jan-13 17:21:05

Not for me, bOught two bus fares to a big play park and a coffee and smoothie after playing, then did a top up shop for the lunches next week.

Tomorrow I need to buy some maternity jeans and DS's birthday present but aiming for NSDs all mon-fri smile

Still 4/15

silverfrog Sat 05-Jan-13 17:47:54

Not for me either. Had dd1's OT, which arguably is a 'bill' bit had to get some bread/ham for lunch too. I did only buy essentials at the supermarket though, which is a positive move as would normally have chucked in a few extra bits - usually don't come away spending less than £20, today I spent £6.65 so a big difference there.

Still 2/10 for me.

MrsShrek3 Sat 05-Jan-13 18:37:42

hehe view
doing well people
Im still 3/15 as we knew with ds1s birthday thing. Hoping for nsd tomorrow unless he wants a pub lunch for birthday day out!! yes he's making a bday last a weekendhmm

TeWiSavesTheDay Sat 05-Jan-13 18:47:24

Big shop today so still 2/10. Stuck to the list though!

Everyone's doing really well, I'm impressed!

AViewfromtheFridge Sat 05-Jan-13 20:34:28

2/15 - it's really making a difference! Thank you OP!

NUFC69 Sat 05-Jan-13 20:35:32

Just found the thread - may I join, too, please?

I'll aim for 10 NSD, I think. First one today; although I didn't spend anything yesterday either, my DH spent £1 on a cup of tea when he was out with his cycling buddies. Not sure if I ought to count that or not? Do I do it by family or just by myself? I know, if DH buys, say, food, I'll count that, as he often picks up the shopping for me, but if he buys something like the cup of tea, ie a purchase for him, I will ignore it.

So 2/10 for me so far.

Nsd is still on 1/10 as I had to get batteries! Try hard tomorrow though.

androbbob Sat 05-Jan-13 22:00:47

Still on 2/10 here but was a planned spend day - DH birthday on Monday so got two jumpers from Next £30 but used giftcards that we had. Also got him a birthday card and magazine for DS again using a gift card. Spent £8 in supermarket but was essentials and stuck to my list! That has got to be a first!! Parking was free at supermarket (town centre) for first 30 mins so I sped round. I also parked at other side of town in 2 hr free parking area and walked the 10 mins to the shops, rather than paying £1.20 for parking for an hour - exercise as well as saving pennies - double bonus.

Not sure about tomorrow - planning a NSD but will be subject to amusing DC at home or free walk out somewhere.

Kids back to school on Tues, so planning NSD on Tues, wed and Thur this week - wil be tough, but just need to be organised.

citybranch Sat 05-Jan-13 22:11:16

No time for a long post but I'm also now on 3/10. Finding it easy so far. Next week...we'll see!

mum23girlys Sat 05-Jan-13 22:39:57

Still on 3/12 as had haircut today. £19 for 4 of us so not too scary. Also £2 for 2 coffees while hanging about at dd's dance class and £1.20 for parking.

Had a Facebook sale collected so made £10 smile

paneer Sat 05-Jan-13 22:46:58

Didn't manage to yesterday (as expected) or today. However today was only a few pounds - took the tube into London which was the only cost.
Had a picnic lunch and we saw a ballet for free! (V&A).

Living Sun 06-Jan-13 07:25:07

Right, as predicted still on 1/10 (and have already had to pay taxi from airport so not a NSD tomorrow). Hoping to start going properly tomorrow!

mum23girlys Sun 06-Jan-13 09:51:00

Need fuel and some packed lunch bits in Aldi today so definitely won't be a nsd.

Got another £15 Facebook sale to be collected today tho smile

So still 3/12

TinyDiamond Sun 06-Jan-13 11:49:12

by the end of today I'll be 3/15 I hope. didn't manage it yesterday had to buy bread and milk

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Sun 06-Jan-13 12:41:10

I'm doing really badly! Yesterday was meant to be a NSD but I had an unsettled tummy so ended up spending £2 in pound world as diet coke is the only thing that works for me. 3 cans for £1 and a deodorant so I can stop smelling like DH. I've had to use his the last few days blush I did quite well though, managed to avoid buying the cheap toblerone for the first time ever grin

Today should be my first NSD and I'm aiming for Tues/Weds too.

I've spent the last 2 evenings setting up spreadsheets to track spending on the joint a/c and my personal a/c so that should help. I know how to live it up on a Friday night wink

Today will be my third NSD I think!

Yesterday I had a 9.9mile walk and at the halfway point I spent £2.50 on a hot chocolate (I blame peer pressure wink). I also popped into town to buy my boots and spent a considerable amount on a really amazing pair of walking boots with money I had saved last year (I had expected to have £300 in a save pot and had £600, so I decided to treat myself to some really good walking boots with a bit of the extra!), got my facewash from Lush whilst in town and bought a cheap wardrobe from Argos as we desperately need hanging storage space! We also did a big shop and I'll do a fruit, vegetable and milk top up on Wednesday. I've got £40 cash for the week out for the three climbing sessions that I've been roped into this week, one of which is in a new centre so I'll have to pay a membership fee on top of the extraordinarily expensive sum to get in hmm But that's stuff that has been budgeted for so I'm quite chuffed with my lack of spending so far grin

bigkidsdidit Sun 06-Jan-13 13:10:45

well I haven't been able to leave my bloody work to get into town and buy my maternity jeans or DS's present so today is 5/15 for me. Will have to go in after work on Tuesday now.

PolkadotCircus Sun 06-Jan-13 14:35:58

Did badly today as bought some sausages(potatoes were too mank for jackets but will mash them instead). Also spent 2.50 on The Times, weekend papers are my downfall, learnt from yesterday that if I keep out of shops I don't buy them so will be better organised next week.

Anybody know what the cheapest TV times publication is-often buy a weekend paper for the TV times which is false economy?

NUFC69 Sun 06-Jan-13 14:46:40

Another NSD for me, so that's 3/10. I know I will need food shopping tomorrow and we are going into town on Tuesday with my DGS, so no doubt we will have a drink out (DH and I both have bus passes so no transport costs). I will now have to do some shop planning to avoid spending on Wednesday too.

IamMummyhearmeROAR Sun 06-Jan-13 15:08:40

No spend day 4/10

Dh filled my car with fuel as he will use it twice this week - he also did a wee shop whilst he was out

snozzlemaid Sun 06-Jan-13 15:09:22

no spending again for me, think i might try for more next month at this rate.
4/10

silverfrog Sun 06-Jan-13 16:18:15

Failed today (was always going to anyway as online food shop comes on Sundays) - bought some things on iTunes this morning, and have just ordered some photo prints of the dc from Christmas to send in their thank you cards.

Oh well, maybe tomorrow. Still at 2/10.

Yay 2/10 for me been good I could have popped out for a treat today but I didn't, going to town though tomorrow for a planned spend I need new pillows and have reserved some silentnight ones that are on offer in Argos.

androbbob Sun 06-Jan-13 18:24:14

NSD 3/10 today. Only got milk which was out of my milk pot from earlier in the week. Apart from swimming lessons this morning we have not been out! Swim lessons are paid for monthly and I had a swim too but was free as I am a member of the leisure centre.

Rest of day spend packing up christmas decs and tidying up. Last day off tomorrow before kids back to school so will probably spend:-) Still planning 3 NSD for Tues, Wed and Thurs.

lorisparkle Sun 06-Jan-13 18:43:13

another nsd today so 4/15. I've got a waitrose voucher so may use that to buy milk tomorrow so it can be a nsd too.

Bullets Sun 06-Jan-13 18:59:03

I'm going to count today as an NSD. Forgot my online shop was coming tonight (plus ordered and put card details in yesterday so I don't feel like I've spent any money today) and we deliberately ate at home rather than go out for lunch, so for me this is 2/15 grin

FleeBee Sun 06-Jan-13 19:16:42

Providing I go to bed now I've made it phew! The grand total of 2/10

flossy101 Sun 06-Jan-13 19:19:49

No spend day here!

Feel very pleased to have managed a NSD at the weekend as its normally worst time.

3/10

hurricanewyn Sun 06-Jan-13 19:22:46

NSD here, so 3/10 here. Will need to pop to the shops in the morning for lunch bits & Tuesday will be payday so I'll be doing the big shop then & buying DD's birthday present. Thursday is her actual birthday so we'll be eating out but the rest of the weeks should be spend free!

TeWiSavesTheDay Sun 06-Jan-13 19:23:07

3/10!

AViewfromtheFridge Sun 06-Jan-13 19:35:27

polkadotcircus, there are a couple of TV Magazines which are 45p, one might be called (imaginatively) TV Guide. It come out on a Tuesday as well so you don't need to spend at the weekend. The trickles aren't as good as the ones in the weekend papers, but it doe the job!

3/15 for me now. Getting almost as much satisfaction from not spending as I normally get from shopping!

AViewfromtheFridge Sun 06-Jan-13 19:35:55

Trickles? Articles!

OnTheBottomWithAStringOfTinsel Sun 06-Jan-13 19:40:58

4/10 done so far! Need a new tyre though so tomorrow won't be one. Rest of week in house studying so should manage a couple more...

Booyhoo Sun 06-Jan-13 20:31:29

spent nothing today so 5/20

lorisparkle food audits aren't sad they really do save you money. you will amaze yourself at what meals you can acrually make when you think you have nothing in.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Sun 06-Jan-13 21:08:29

My first NSD grin 1/10!

It was kind of cheating as I've been working from home so haven't left the house all day to be tempted.

3/10 down today- feeling good about this!

ComradeJing Sun 06-Jan-13 21:29:04

Still on 1/15. Had to buy bread yesterday as I forgot that having teenage SDC visit means going through a loaf of bread every day.

ComradeJing Mon 07-Jan-13 11:57:26

2/15 now smile

I spent money today, had to pay my Ofsted off as it runs out tomorrow blush I am getting a payment back from my boss though as I've done three grocery shops for her, two of which I forgot about, so that's money I diodn't think I had back! grin Still on 3/10 NSDs then!

wools Mon 07-Jan-13 16:46:11

3/10 for me. I did a food shop today and also ordered a new vacuum cleaner. I'm hopeful for tomorrow though!

Booyhoo Mon 07-Jan-13 17:04:01

no NSD for me today sad

had to go to asda and get bread, milk, cheese and apples.

still 5/20.

silverfrog Mon 07-Jan-13 17:04:33

3/10 for me. Managed a nsd today, but won't tomorrow as have 4 (!) birthday club-ins to give to. So will make a list of bits and pieces I need to get tomorrow as well and try to stick to it.

lorisparkle Mon 07-Jan-13 17:07:50

5/15 today as decided we could hold off on milk as we gave some uht if things go pear shaped in the morning. tomorrow will be a spending day as online shop will arrive. I did half a shop though so can do another one later in the week when we are low on milk again.

nkf Mon 07-Jan-13 18:34:42

Day 2 yesterday but will have to spend tomorrow. I'm not counting regular bills or the fact I paid my tax bill yesterday. Is that the rule? It's to curb the frittering or the pop to the shops for milk, come back with two bags situations?

I had my 3rd NSD on saturday but failed on Sunday. DH has spent £8 today on petrol and baking potatoes but I'll have to count that really as ours is a joint effort.

So 3/10. Hoping for another tomorrow.

Well done everyone. I love reading how well everyone is doing smile

mum23girlys Mon 07-Jan-13 19:29:29

Had hoped for a nsd today but ran out of baby wipes and toothpaste. I would've improvised with the wipes but needed toothpaste too.

Got playground tomorrow so will spend £1.50 there so stuck on 3/12 till at least wed

mum23girlys Mon 07-Jan-13 19:30:21

**playgroup not playground blush

greensnail Mon 07-Jan-13 19:41:12

I have spent the last few days failing spectacularly at this. Friday was a planned spending day but I ran out of time to get DD1's birthday cake so had to go and buy it on saturday before her party instead.

Sunday I took the dds to the beach and thought it was free to park where I did but luckily noticed the traffic warden just in time to buy a ticket. At least it was just the parking to pay for and not a fine for not paying.

Today I popped to marks and spencer to collect a belt I'd ordered for dd1 from the sale and bought myself some socks as well, which i really needed as all of mine have holes in, but still was spending.

Tomorrow I'll have to pay for DD2's pre-school, but I'm going to pay for the half-term to save me having to pay each week so that should help for the rest of the month.

So, I'm still 1/10 but aiming for a NSD on wednesday.

AViewfromtheFridge Mon 07-Jan-13 19:44:52

Does it count if other people spend money on you?

If not, 4/15.

greensnail Mon 07-Jan-13 19:57:10

I'm definitely not counting other people spending on me (otherwise I'd be failing even more spectacularly).

MirandaWest Mon 07-Jan-13 20:12:07

Have managed three NSDs now. Today was small things (two books in a charity shop and two bottles of drink which really weren't necessary....).

Tomorrow I have planned spending which is better but still spending.

Bullets Mon 07-Jan-13 21:48:51

NSD no. 3 for me today!

I lift share to work and paid my friend's petrol money at the weekend on a spending day.

Made my lunch and lots of snacks Sunday night to take with me so I could resist the canteen and vending machines. Settled down with my egg sandwich and a good book at 1pm feeling very smug...and the fire alarm went off, typical!

I am currently tucking into stewed out of date plums and ice cream, reliving my youth, cheaper than sending DH out for chocolate too smile

theowlworrier Mon 07-Jan-13 22:15:18

Yes! Finally managed my first NSD smile No coffees at work, no buying lunch at work!

FleeBee Mon 07-Jan-13 22:26:46

I'm off to bed so today is my third NSD grin 3/10

A spend day today, but I went food shopping. I withdrew my food budget for the week, spent some but saved £10 for bread/milk during the week. I'm not going to count that £10 as and when I spend it, but if it goes on anything other than groceries, I will. Dinner money is paid for the week for DD too.

TinyDiamond Mon 07-Jan-13 23:36:54

still on 3/15 but tomorrow definitely won't be one either. hopefully weds will

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Mon 07-Jan-13 23:44:51

Spend day for me too so I'm still on 1/10. I'm counting DDs. Home insurance came out today plus topped up oyster card but that's my tube fares sorted for the next 2 weeks.

Also bought my parent's a bottle of wine for looking after DD. DH is away and I have to do extra days at work so they've saved me 2 days childcare costs. They said no need to but given I've been fed there for 2 days, scavenged leftovers for my lunch and got a lie in yesterday I think they deserve it.

MrsShrek3 Tue 08-Jan-13 00:17:44

well DS1 did want a pub lunch so as budgety as it was, a fiver a head grin it was still a treat and a spend. So got home and did an online shop as I haven't any time in the week to go to supermarket. The last online shop I did was when dd was a baby - she's 7..... Today NSD packed lunch for work and dc to swimming lessons (we pay for the year by direct debit, do I take it that doesn't count?)
sigh. 4/15 and this is very focussing, thank you for the kick up the bum to start doing it smile

Living Tue 08-Jan-13 07:15:08

Morning! NSD yesterday so now at 2/10. Weekly shop tonight and have to pay membership fees tomorrow so it won't have another NSD until Thursday. It's the planned expenditure that's causing me problems! Will buy cinema tickets for Thursday today so that Thursday can be a NSD.

Thinking that next month I may count all planned expenditure as being on the day I take the cash out at the beginning of the month (nothing is on direct debits in this country) - otherwise I'm getting nowhere (unless I get DH to hand the money over, which feels like cheating!).

Bloody hell, I'm trying to do this and forgot when I bought new copy of shred (mine keeps jumping) and DH the first Jack Reacher book (he went to see film and loved it so thought would be nice treat!). Fuck and filled car up with petrol!

Today though I am only buying a loaf of bread!

This is bloody hard not spending isn't it!

missbennett Tue 08-Jan-13 12:13:49

Had to spend over the weekend but kept it to the minimum - approx £10 on birthday bits for DD (already had main present), petrol for run on Sunday, groceries on Sunday (which included cake for DD and flowers for friends I was visiting), total of £16!! Decided that I will not count train fare as a spend, as I have it in my 'fares' pot for the week, but if I use the car and have to pay to park, I will count that as a spend. So, yesterday was NSD 2. Today I have had to buy bread, milk and stamps, and also got the biscuits for the group I'm running tomorrow so hopefully tomorrow will be NSD, today being planned. I will get there eventually smile. Total is 2/12 I think.

OnTheBottomWithAStringOfTinsel Tue 08-Jan-13 12:19:45

Well I only spent €5 yesterday (train fares for DD going back to school).

However today was an epic fail (far more so that I had anticipated - needed 4 new tyres - €250, eek!).

At least though the tyres are now safe, we typically get our worst weather in Jan and Feb so I'm prepared.

I then decided to go the whole hog and did the grocery shop as well (€50), if today is going to be a spendy day, I want it over for the rest of the week. I might even get 2 weeks out of the shopping and a few cupboard meals, here's hoping.

lorisparkle Tue 08-Jan-13 12:57:21

well still on 5/15 but today was planned - online shop, toddlers and some sewing stuff. was very good and cycled to the next village for baby and toddlers.

I use the tesco pay delivery in advance for online shops. it makes it so much more cosy effective for me and means I am only paying about a pound for delivery.

MirandaWest Tue 08-Jan-13 13:03:10

I think that my problem with this is that there are some things you do need to buy but then you've spent already so if you're me you feel like you might as well keep spending IYSWIM. I was good today though and only bought the things on my list rather than random reduced Christmas stuff in paperchase and bubble bath in boots.

I think I'm going to try and think harder about whether I need to buy things or not whether or not it is a NSD. I can see the temptation of spending money on a different day s you can say you've had a NSD but you're still spending the same amount of money overall.

bigkidsdidit Tue 08-Jan-13 15:58:54

I do that Miranda

Today I had to get DS's birthday present and card so I thought ah well, it's a spend day, and did a little top up shop that I could probably have done without

Still 5/15

PolkadotCircus Tue 08-Jan-13 17:05:52

Day 4/10. Yesterday was food day and not under £100 for 5 for a week so not happy but did well today.Having my hair cut tomorrow, can't put it off any longer or I'll start scaring people. Thursday I'm having coffee with a friend,1st after the hols but Friday and Sunday will hopefully clock up another 2.

shockers Tue 08-Jan-13 17:24:08

Can I join in? I've had about 4 days already where I haven't spent (including today), so I'm hitting the ground running.

I've started meal planning for January and I'm doing the dryathon thing, so I have the potential to pay off some of my vast overdraft save loads.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree Tue 08-Jan-13 17:50:15

Welcome shockers. What's the dryathon thing?

Today was meant to be a NSD but I found out this morning the cats have no food left so had to buy them some. Then saw discounted tupperware so bought too. It is for taking in my own lunches so a good investment winkI didn't buy the heavily discounted selection box. Took every ounce of willpower grin

Still in 1/10. I'm dreadful at this hmm

MrsShrek3 Tue 08-Jan-13 19:09:27

made packed lunch and left the house without it sad so had to buy lunch. still 4/15 definite NSD tomorrow (and no need to make lunch as it's already done wink )

Shinyshoes1 Tue 08-Jan-13 20:32:22

I'm still 1/ 15 but I WILL I WILL I WILL have a nsd tomorrow

IamMummyhearmeROAR Tue 08-Jan-13 20:57:20

Nsd 5 here- took homemade soup to work. Tomorrow should be nsd 6 but Ill need a wee shop on Thursday.

hurricanewyn Tue 08-Jan-13 20:57:55

Still on 3/10 here, but tomorrow should be a NSD. Broke till next week, so it should be easy grin

oopsadaisymaisy Tue 08-Jan-13 21:35:09

I m totally rubbish at this. I managed to spend nearly £20 today. Ran out of concealer and cotton wool, then saw eye shadow for £1 in the bargain bucket so bought that, I definitely didn't need eye shadow. Then ds decided he wanted back lunch rather than school lunch so bought him some lunch bits. I'm nearly out of foundation too. I cannot live life without it smile

4/10 grin I did spend, but they were from a pot of planned expenses that I'm not counting (climbing: £26 for 5 sessions and £1.50 parking for work today). I am spending much less on crap already I've noticed.

nkf Tue 08-Jan-13 21:54:30

3 nsds so far.

androbbob Tue 08-Jan-13 22:01:55

Another 4/10 here - no spend at all - planned not to spend! Took lunch to work, was raining at lunch so no inclination to go out. Meal planned upto Sunday and all food in fridge / freezer, although will need to get mince on Friday. Definately doing me good not spending and thinking about what I spend on. Also helped by the fact I am skint until payday and also need to find £70 to pay DD school holiday balance by 7th Feb!

I reckon I am 'saving' or not spending £3 to £5 a day, and that is not taking into account the £20 here and there in the supermarket. I am planning to try 12 NSD for Feb.

I understand what Miranda is saying, in that as its a spend day, then you wait until then to get the other things you need, but I think it is all in your mindset. I think we need to consider the MSE Martin Mantra:

If you are skint - Do you need it, Can I afford it, Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere

If you are not skint - Will I use it, Is it worth it, Have I checked if its cheaper elsewhere

If any answer is NO then dont buy it!

Definately worth waiting a day to see if you really need to buy something - not the absolute essentials, but the make-up, clothes, etc!

shockers Tue 08-Jan-13 22:38:54

Buffy, sorry, it's the Dryathlon suggested by Cancer Care UK, no alcohol through the month of January, but I'm going to carry on I think!

I took yesterday's left overs to work for lunch (chicken and veg stew) and it tasted even better second time round.

TinyDiamond Tue 08-Jan-13 22:39:58

4/15 now smile

silverfrog Tue 08-Jan-13 22:44:35

No nsd here today. Mostly planned spend (dd1 needed a new flask for school lunches), and bought a few other bits but on vouchers so doesn't count. But then failed miserably and bought some bits in Lakeland - that shop is alwaysy downfall! Still, they were bargains which will save me money in the long run...

Have a parents coffee morning at dd1's school tomorrow, so will probably spend, and dentist again on Thursday so this week is not looking too good!

3/10

AViewfromtheFridge Tue 08-Jan-13 23:12:15

5/15 here. I'm beginning to get a bit obsessive about it all though. It's a fine line between being careful and being tight!

ComradeJing Wed 09-Jan-13 00:01:15

Still 2/15 here.

Total fail yesterday when I bought a book and a TV series on itunes without actually thinking about it. Didn't even realise I had spent money. sad hmm

Then in the evening we found TWO giant cockroaches in the house [boak] <- sick face. They're here because it's such an open house and yesterday was baking (41 degrees in the day. 36 at midnight) so they all come in to the houses. <shudders>

So I spent about $100 on cockroach killers in an online shop. I don't feel even a little guilty about this though.

ComradeJing Wed 09-Jan-13 00:01:43

oh ffs envy not [boak] hmm

snozzlemaid Wed 09-Jan-13 06:22:13

Another one for me yesterday. Thought it was going to be an expensive day as dp found a nail in a tyre. He took it to get repaired/replaced and it was only a short tack that had gone into thickest part of tyre so no nothing needed doing. They took it out and all's fine.
So very pleased we didn't have to buy a new tyre.
5/10

I had a planned NSD yesterday so 4/10 for me. Took left over jacket spud to work and was very nice actually. DH is struggling more than me I think as he is at home with DD during the daytime and often 'pops' to LIDL - he's working on it.

Planned spend today on groceries.

TeWiSavesTheDay Wed 09-Jan-13 08:29:05

I'm still on 3/10 and need to spend again today because we're out of milk.

Haven't spent much and only 50p was unreasonable but still think I can do better next week.

wools Wed 09-Jan-13 08:36:17

4/10 for me. I will have to get petrol today so will aim for tomorrow as NSD.

hurricanewyn Wed 09-Jan-13 09:24:24

NSD for me today - will be rooting around the fridge for lunch. Should be interesting, whatever I end up with. 4/10 here.

Living Wed 09-Jan-13 09:53:57

Right still on 2/10. Yesterday was not a NSD (double negative in there) - was always going to be a spend day as had to do the weekly shop (although couldn't get everything we need so will have to be a top up). Also bought lunch out, went out for dinner and to the cinema so blush.

Other thing I did though was to get out a wodge of cash and parcel it out into planned expenditure. I'm then not counting this. I think at the beginning of every month I will do a list of things I need to pay (eg nanny fees, nursery fees, swimming lessons) and count these all on one day.

Hope I don't get a [buscuit] for being on this thread and still paying swimming lessons!

Living Wed 09-Jan-13 09:54:14

Oh you know I mean biscuit

akaemmafrost Wed 09-Jan-13 10:05:53

Can I join? I was doing this over Christmas anyway because its easier then. Loads of food and entertainment already in.

Can't start today as need to buy straws! Of all things. Believe it or not they are a necessity here, have 2 x dc with ASD who cannot bear the feel of liquids on their lips. So it will have to start tomorrow.

I'm quite excited actually I will start by aiming for three as I have to do my weekly shop on Sunday.

mum23girlys Wed 09-Jan-13 10:20:42

Spent £12 yesterday on a top up aldi shop and toddler group. Also made £7 on a Facebook sale.

Today looks to be a nsd as dh doesn't get paid till tomorrow and fridge etc stocked. It's a good month though as amazingly I have £12 left grin

So 4/12

lorisparkle Wed 09-Jan-13 10:40:30

still going to be 5/15 we need diesal have got a 10p off per litre so that will cushion the blow.

ComradeJing Wed 09-Jan-13 11:43:32

No biscuit from me living. We're in a similar boat - DH earns well which makes our financial situation (debt and no savings) even more ridiculous.

I have a bill that's just come in so today went from being another NSD to a SD.

stormforce10 Wed 09-Jan-13 12:30:39

Hi I've been doing NSDs but somehow not noticed this thread until now. Hope no one minds me joining so late.

I'm up to 5 NSDs so far and I'm aiming for a round dozen. I'm hoping to bring it up to 6 today so will be half way there.

IamMummyhearmeROAR Wed 09-Jan-13 17:39:31

No spend day 6 here

androbbob Wed 09-Jan-13 18:25:34

As planned another NSD today. That makes 4/10. Hoping for another one tomorrow.

shockers Wed 09-Jan-13 19:28:05

Another one today... that's two in a row! I forgot my sandwiches this morning, but managed to cadge some leftovers from the school cook (it was a slow day for pasta grin), so didn't have to go shopping.

Shinyshoes1 Wed 09-Jan-13 19:33:34

2/15 grin
I will get there but NOT tomorrow. I've run out of black sacks so need to buy some

3/10 here smile
Was quite easy though I was in work all day and I took some veg couscous and a yoghurt with me for lunch.
Failed yesterday though, I compketely forgot about nsd's and bought a cooked chicken and an sensored air freshner.
Probably won,t manage it tomorrow either as dh is off work with me.
So many of you are doing great, lets keep up the good work people.

greensnail Wed 09-Jan-13 20:46:58

Aargh, I'm rubbish at this. Had a nice NSD planned for me and dd2 today involving dropping more stuff at charity shops then a trip to the library. Ended up taking car into town so I had to pay for parking, then thought as I'm spending I might as well treat us to lunch in town too.

Think I'm going to have to allocate a certain amount to bus fares/ parking per week and not include this as a spend as this is proving to be my downfall. Tomorrow will be taking dd2 to gymnastics in the morning which is already paid for but will need to take a bus to get back in time to pick up dd1 from nursery (DH has the car tomorrow) so that would be another spend already. Will put £10 in a pot this evening I think to cover parking and buses for the next week and will only count it as a spend if I exceed the £10 in a week.

Still 1/10 at the moment though....

Booyhoo Wed 09-Jan-13 22:35:28

ooh i've forgotten to update this!

had a very naughty spend yesterday. got the dcs mcdonald's after tae kwon doe class! blush

no spending today though grin

6/20

spending tomorrow as i'm at the hairdresser

hurricanewyn Thu 10-Jan-13 06:20:59

Another NSD here today, so I'll be on 5/10 - halfway there!

ComradeJing Thu 10-Jan-13 08:27:17

I'm on a no spend day here but I have paid some bills. Not counting bills as spends so 3/15 for me.

PolkadotCircus Thu 10-Jan-13 10:00:02

Day 5/10 here too!

Day 5/10 done yesterday! Needed a top up shop though so spent €25 this morning - I'm racing through milk etc as I'm studying at home ATM. Tomorrow should be another though, fingers crossed.

Also I did up a spreadsheet - well updated one.

I keep one with a list of all my d/d's, amts and due dates. Every few days I update it with my balance & work out what d/d's are still due (and include any large unexpected cash/card expenses that are coming up, so I know how much I have till payday.

I've now put in a list of all the days in the mth and whether each has been an NSD, a "compulsory" spend such as food, money to school for a trip, or "frivolous" spending like wine, new books (have about 5 unread and can also go to library or charity shop), clothes etc.

I've RAGged it (coded each Red, Amber, Green) and hope to not have any Reds this mth, all Amber and Green so far, very satisfying to look at! (Sad or what but as I have €50 less a mth to spend due to the bloody budget I'll do anything that works...)

lorisparkle Thu 10-Jan-13 10:29:37

6/15 for me today. not going anywhere to spend any money. was going to buy pizza for tea but decided to be good and use something from the freezer.

lorisparkle Thu 10-Jan-13 10:30:09

forgot to say - love your spreadsheetgrin

silverfrog Thu 10-Jan-13 12:20:16

still on 3/10 - bloody dentist again! £350 this time, so really do need to start upping the NSDs hmm

really does ake you think about each and every purchase though, and I have definitely cut out a lot of 'extra' spends - the stuff at the supermarket that just finds it's way into my trolley (wink), or the extra bits when I fill up the car etc.

now I just need to find a way to make sure that essential spending is reduced too - that's the hard bit atm!

TeWiSavesTheDay Thu 10-Jan-13 14:05:11

Ouch! Hope it wasn't too painful at the dentist.

We're not going out again today so have finally made 4/10!

Nothing needed tomorrow either.

NSD 5/10 here. Am very pleased with myself grin. It's so easy when I'm at work. I am enjoyingseeing what can be made from cupboard/freezer ingredients. Freezer is down to about 3/4 full so far blush

bigkidsdidit Thu 10-Jan-13 18:02:36

Still on 5 too, stuck here since Sunday. DH forgot to put yeast in the read machine so we were greeted with a rock hard lump this morning, so no sandwiches and bought lunch..

This week has been really hard!

greensnail Thu 10-Jan-13 18:18:51

Hooray, 2/10 today! We've run out of bread though so ell definitely need to shop tomorrow so planning to meal plan and make a proper list this evening fire a big shop tomorrow.

missbennett Thu 10-Jan-13 19:13:13

4/12 today smile and even better, I made a profit! Took a 10 euro note left from the summer and exchanged it for the princely sum of £7.19! Was meeting a friend for a coffee and thought could pay from that and not count as a spend, but very lovely friend bought the coffee, so a definite NSD today.
Planned spends tomorrow - need petrol and grocery shopping so will do in one hit and also review the state of play in the bank and if I can make any payments to anyone, but Sat should be NSD as have to do first aid course so will be occupied all day!

TinyDiamond Thu 10-Jan-13 20:10:39

had a naughty couple of days spending blush so still on 4/15. I reckon Sunday will be my next nsd now

MrsRandom78 Thu 10-Jan-13 20:22:15

3/10 today! Dead chuffed as normally by this point in the month I'm well into my overdraft, but even including extra Christmas expense that came off this pay, I'm still in the black (just!) - whoop!

androbbob Thu 10-Jan-13 21:32:20

Opps a little spend today - £3 in total out of my purse. DS was 'starving' when came out of afterschool club so we had to bus a snack for him and ended up with some pasties for tea from the pound bakery.

Tomorrow is a planned spend day - £3 for a buttie at lunchtime. Will foregoe the crisps and cake though in an attempt to be frugal!

Definately feeling the benefit of this NSD - more organised about food buying and planning and thinking about what spending on.

Need to manage 6 more NSD in the next two weeks before payday on 25th.

akaemmafrost Thu 10-Jan-13 22:46:15

Didn't quite make it today £1.45 on a massive tiger loaf but will last till the weekend so it's not too bad. Determined to make it two days now though. Have to spend on Sunday because that's weekly shop day.

nkf Thu 10-Jan-13 23:15:32

Help! I totally forgot today was meant to be a nsd. So annoyed. Now, I probably won't be able to fit one in till Monday. Grrr.

Bullets Fri 11-Jan-13 00:17:27

My first spending day of the week!

Used money out the 'spare change' jar to pay for the bus and a few pints of milk so was hoping for another NSD but took DH out this evening for an early birthday meal so currently on 5/15.

Hoping Sunday will be a NSD as we're off to Center Parcs next week and I won't be able to deny myself a daily Starbucks hot choc while DS wears himself out on the softplay, aah happy days grin

akaemmafrost Fri 11-Jan-13 17:07:24

So very, very near today. I had to get gas and electric, metered, don't count this as spending as it's money laid aside for utilities each week so that fine but then went and bought a choc bar on impulse. That was it though. I have to say though I checked my bank balance against this time last month and I am well in the black rather than into my overdraft as I was this time last month. Really want to do a proper NS day though, here's to tomorrow!

snozzlemaid Fri 11-Jan-13 17:45:19

Not going well here. Three days of spending and probably will tomorrow as well.
But still doable I think.
5/10

TeWiSavesTheDay Fri 11-Jan-13 18:57:48

Really tempted to spend money because of something that's come up at the weekend. Need to go through my wardrobe and come up with an alternative!

Will not spend!

MrsShrek3 Fri 11-Jan-13 20:21:09

only two NSD managed this week. was hoping for 3 and possibly 4.... 6/15hmm

missbennett Fri 11-Jan-13 20:22:02

Spending day today, paid for veggies and about to head to supermarket. Also had to get petrol as car telling me I could go no miles on what I'd got! But exH gave me money he owed me from before Christmas (only a tenner, but still!) so with that and euro trade in yesterday I might treat myself and DD2 to a coffee out on Sunday and not count it as a spend!
Child benefit goes in on Monday so then I hope I can pay something off the mortgage.......next month's pay should be better but have got into swing of frugality and must keep it up as will take a few months to get straight I'm afraid.

lorisparkle Fri 11-Jan-13 20:22:54

still on 6/15 planned spending though as shopping due any minute! was very good and took lunch to work.

nkf Sat 12-Jan-13 15:16:23

Still on three. Feeling very discouraged.

bigkidsdidit Sat 12-Jan-13 15:18:58

Finally managed number 6! It's taken me all week to chalk that one up

greensnail Sat 12-Jan-13 15:46:21

I'm still on 2 nkf. I was hopinf to do one today but was too lazy to pack a pic nic when I took the girls out today so ended up buying lunch. Am working tonight so hopefully can manage one tomorrow as I'll be sleeping for some of it.

I've had 7 now! shock I can't believe it, I used to spend dribs and drabs every day and I've managed to spend nothing but planned expenses (parking, climbing) for 7 days in January so far grin

7/10

cantheyseeme Sat 12-Jan-13 19:13:44

Im going to start feb first and try 10NSD's be a nice little challenge for me! :D

akaemmafrost Sat 12-Jan-13 19:23:00

I am embarrassed to post. I STILL haven't managed even one! Had to top up my Oyster card today (travel, does it count?) then I went past the market which won't be open tomorrow (weekly shop day) so got all my fruit for the week. Nothing frivolous today though, didn't even treat myself to The Guardian.

akaemmafrost Sat 12-Jan-13 19:25:01

Going to try for Monday and Tuesday next week as NSD. Should be doable, have to get dd a school bag from the school shop which is only open Wednesdays so can't make it a trio.

lorisparkle Sat 12-Jan-13 19:39:15

I'm still on 6/15 as stupidly put DS1's turquoise uniform in the wash with their white polo shirts and now have slightly off white polo shirts so had to buy some stuff from the supermarket to make them white again.

I think it is easier to have NSD if you don't go anywhere. On a general basis I cycle to school and back in the morning and walk in the afternoon. There are no shops on the way so no opportunities to spend. I also don't get much time on the computer so little opportunity for internet shopping.

I managed another one today so 7/12 for me. Over half way there. I've hardly spent on anything unnecessary either although did give in and have a couple of coffees with a friend but since I used to buy a coffee almost every day I'm doing well

Its hard not to spend on things especially if I have to go into a shop for some reason. I went to get some flea and worming stuff for hte cat and managed to come out with ONLY those (and £10 less sad )

I have only managed 2! I alnost got 3 then spent 95p on a coffee without thinking sad I don't think that its possible to get 10 now sad

Up to 6/10 yesterday, but had to pay for parking today. However someone gave me a bottle of wine so I don't have to buy one for tonight! Cinema tomorrow so won't be able to aim for another till Monday. Am on a course on Tues & Wed where lunch is provided so 2 easy NSD's coming up. Must update me spreadsheet tonight (stunning social life that I have!).

Managed another one today - mainly as we didnt go anywhere! Stayed in and did some housework and sorting out, homework. etc. So now half way there - 5/10 NSD. Need to do three next week and two the week after to make it before payday - which is 27th but as that is a Sunday, will get it on 25th! May try to eek out what is left until Mon 28th if I can!

Will be spending tomorrow - need to get some food in but I have written a list to stick to. Also DD has her riding lesson tomorrow, so that will be a spend. Stables have had flooding problems so she hasnt ridden since mid Dec, and the money to pay for tomorrows lesson is from the cancelled one on 23rd Dec. She only goes every fortnight so next one will be after payday!

No spending on Thursday & Friday, but spent yesterday & today, so 7/10 for me.

Will be getting food in Mon & Tues but the other 3 days should be NSD's.

5/10 - halfway!!!

4/10 here, I took soup to work.
Will be doing the same tomorrow for lunch, probably helps with the healthy eating too.
Loads of people are doing brilliant.

Woohoo, 3/10 todaygrin Spending half the day in bed after working a night shift really helped.

Feel like I'm finally getting into the swing of it.

No spend day 7/10 today. Tomorrow I have to pay for school lunches, Tuesday is £1.50 for Brownies. Hopefully Wednesday will be my next nsd followed by nsd 9 on Thursday. We'll see!

PersuedByPenguins Sun 13-Jan-13 19:57:25

Well I'm hoping I can get #3 tomorrow! Tues will definitely be a spend day and probably Wed. I will try to get one in on Thurs, then Sat will be a spend day but I will try for Sunday. So hopefully by this time next week I will be on #5. I'll feel much better if I can manage that!

I'd like to spend no money for the next 12 days. Till pay day. But just one day at a time and all that. What bugs me is that I forgot the other day. I forgot to take some lunch in and went to the supermarket.

silverfrog Sun 13-Jan-13 20:09:18

Am finally on 4/10! grin

Hopefully I can continue and have a few nsds in a row...
