Own brand sanitary protection

So couldn't justify the £6 it was going to cost as out of everything just about so have bought own brand for the first time.

I really don't think I'd get on with a moon cup though I'm sure that's the cheapest way so let's hope my £2 purchases are ok

Mooncups REALLY don't appeal to me either. I buy cheapy sanitary stuff and it's absolutely fine.

I don't think I've ever bought anything other than own brand unless desperate and the shop only had brands. I've never had a problem with it, and dd1 has never mentioned any problems with them either.

I now use a mooncup though, even though I wasn't sure I'd get on with it, but I quite like it. It's a bit pricey if you aren't sure though.

Boots own brand stuff is fine. Haven't tried any others.

I find often the own brand sanitary towels aren't scented which appeals to me. Own brand non-applicator tampons are good too.
I have used 'value' towels in hard times but they are extremely bulky so I wouldn't recommend them.

I use the value ones, partly because the government charge vat on San pro and I don't see how it's classed as non-essential.

Lidl's own brand tampons are fine.

The classification of sanpro for VAT is done at EU level, and is at a discounted 5% rate. It's urban myth btw that shaving gear is exempt. It isn't.

Have you tried a cup? I have a meluna. It was less than £15. If you use tampons it's really no different. I was very sceptical about them, but it was getting thrush every AF so I was willing to try anything.

Mooncup do a money back guarantee if you don't get on with it after trying for a couple of cycles . It has saved me an awful lot of money , been using it for 10 years now.

I like Lidl own brand. I use a Meluna but need pads/liners as well. I've found the very cheapest value liners are quite scratchy and end up scrunching up because they don't stick properly.

I don't often say this - but Tesco's OB towels are more effective than Lidl's.

Haven't tried anyone else's own brand due to the dearth of other shops round here.

Didn't expect this many replies - well coop app tampons have been fine today however have just opened the nighttime towels and maternity pads springs to mind

"OB" is the name of a real brand (Germany and most of Asia).

Kotex are v cheap from Poundland and I've found them fine.

Didn't know that about the mooncup money back :( I bought one but took 18m to use it as I got pregnant and now I don't like it and could have got my money back

Sorry, RhondaJean, I'm not at home so cannot check how many there are in the pack (will look later if this stays on TIO). It it was 99p for an ordinary size IYSWIM. But I din't know how that stacks up against supermarket own label (I seem to remember Tescos being even cheaper but a long time since I got them, and French hypermarket own labels being vv cheap too).

After not needing San-pro for 1+ year due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, I thought I'd give own brand a go.

The own brand products I've used have been fine: san-pro is something I don't feel needs premium brands, providing it does the job!!!

I also use tesco own brand panty liners which are 22p for 30 compared to £2+ I used to pay!!!

I had a mirena coil placed so I don't buy san pro anymore. Highly recommended if you're not planning on having kids, though mine was placed for v heavy periods.

Another mooncup user here- took a while to get used to but really is far, far better than changing pads/tampons every few hours. I just use a panty liner at the same time but rarely ever leak (and when it does it's not catestrophic iyswim).

You can also get reusable pads but if your problem is the initial outlay then I can see why you're keen to try own brand options.

I never used anything but always until they made them scented and I itched like crazy. Now I use boots own and they are just as good .

I have the Mirena too but I still have heavy periods - my gynae told me that a third of women stop having periods so it's no guarantee that having it fitted would stop periods. Still reliable as contraception though but don't rely on it as a cost cutting way to avoid paying for sanpro!
