My DH makes the best cottage pie with frozen (yes, frozen!) mince when we are on a serious budget. It lasts for two days, tastes better the next day with a big slice of fresh, crusty bread.

We sometimes just do the veg. All roasted together in a big dish with grated cheese or feta. Serve with gravy and sometimes yorkshire puddings. If I have a lone bit of meat (eg one chop or sausage, couple of rashers of bacon etc) then that gets chopped up and thrown in too.

Shepherd's (yeah, cottage!) pie, or DH likes mince pinwheels - roll out puff pastry, put mince on, roll up and slice like a swiss roll then bake.

We often have fish pie. I make up batches for the freezer. Other times I'll make a chicken & veg pie with puff pastry. We eat a roast dinner maybe every 6 weeks and often not on a Sunday. I try to keep our red meat intake to a minimum.

We don't have Sunday roasts. By the time Sunday rolls around, it's a good day if we end up with a solid cooked meal with some steamed veg. Roasts are such a huge faff, cost a fortune and the dishes afterwards are totally out of control.

We eat alot of roasts as find it cheap for 3 of us a £5 aldi free range chicken will do roast then smothered in bbq sauce n cooked in roasting bag with wedges for another night then all leftovers taken off bone n frozen n made into pies when we have Gammon/bacon joint. A £5 gammon joint will do roast then gammon with chips n egg n then rest mixed with chicken mushrooms n leeks in white sauce with pastry pie top n makes 2 pies so for £10 worth joints get 6 meals obviously there is added cost potatoes n veg n making a white sauce n pastry.

Yes if u have lamb or beef or even pork it's more expensive we have these if on offer so 1.1kg rib beef recently for £10ish did us 4 meals - 2 roasts 1 egg fried rice dish n a beef with onions n mushrooms dish.

I do the same with the whole chicken/joint thing as well. I like a pie from the left over chicken as it does HF ave the roast taste. If there's gravy left I'll add that to leeks, carrot & onion for the filling.the beef joint is diced up slow cookered with veg for a nice potato topped pie. Just like the m&s simply filling

I don't cook a roast on Sundays but we do enjoy one during the week on an evening when there are no after school activities. We often have one with sausages and all the other usual roast bits... Delic.

The cheapest joint when you do want a sunday roast (apart from chicken) seems to be pork belly. It's £6.99 a kg in my supermarket at the moment, and roasted for 3 hours or so with a bit of water in the tin and covered, it goes tender and delicious. yum.

Sometimes I make meat loaf with tonnes of onions fried in butter to bulk out the mince, boiled eggs in the middle, and wrapped in thin cut streaky bacon. drool.

Sausages, mince and dumpling or usually a couple of chicken breasts that are generally lurking at the back of the freezer.

I don't do proper roasts very often, but I might do frozen chicken portions with veg and gravy. Ds is a veggie so I cook him a couple of veggie sausages.
I cook a big pot of veg curry or chilli and rice.

I was coming on to suggest pork belly, we pay about three quid for enough for a family of five.

breast of lamb is very tasty and cheap, but holds a lot of fat. Lamb fat is not nice for roast potatoes or dripping, so pour it off into a can and bin it or put it out for birds and foxes. Once you've cooked off the fat, you can cut up leftovers for shepherd pie or something. It's usually rolled and you can put stuffing in the middle if you want.

It's the first roast dinner I cooked in our first house.
