Heating question - warning - boring!

Is it cheaper to turn some of the radiators down in a few rooms and only heat a few rooms or does that man the radiators that are on have to work harder to maintain the temp IYSWIM. We are in a relatively cavernous and cold roomy place and i'm dreading the heating bills this winter. OH thinks its best to keep all of them on while i go around turning them off in the kitchen and hall etc. Confused
TIA

Well, I dont heat the rooms we dont use. Bills seem reasonable.

It doesnt really make sense to heat a room you wont use.

I only heat the rooms we use & we seem to have very low bills.

I don't heat rooms unless we are using them at the time - what would be the point of that ?
The key to this working though is shutting all doors at all times. If you or your dcs leave doors open, then the temperature between the 2 rooms will constantly be trying to equalise itself, in which case your OH would be right.

Draught excluders are under-rated imho, I have a bastard of a draught coming under one of our doors but it's all doubleglazed etc.

I think mil has such high bills as all doors are left open so the heat isnt contained.

It works as long as the thermostat is in a room that is heated OP.

Hmm, the thermostat is in the hallway - the boiler is downstairs its all a bit confusing!
I think I'm going to stick to turning down the radiators and closing the doors - Thanks everyone!
