OK.

I would love to write but whenever I've been to creative writing classes they always seem to ask me to write other stuff...

I really want to write about my own experiences (quite colourful) if necessary under a false name and then progress to my own writing and style (I know who I like varies from Martina Evans, Suzannah Dunn, Hilary Mantel, William Trevor etc). I think I have a quite dark humourous style about experiences but no idea where to start.

thanks for reading so far.

Well you start by writing....you just do it. Experience has taught me that distractions are self made...we all do it; "Oh I need to get a better laptop before I start."

Or "Oh I don't know how to format things correctly..."

Just write.

I've started going to a writers group, it really helps to get a friendly critique. Some of the other people are really talented; published novelists and poets, retired English lecturers etc; and some of us are just normal people who like to write.

Tinkly yes a writers group is a good idea.. think I will do this..

I just sort of think that if I write primarily on my own experiences it will come across as I don't know... not right etc but yes, i need to write and then get critiqued!

No classes, no groups, no courses, no part-time degrees, no critiques, just do it as TheHouseOnBellSt says.

If you feel that you need that other stuff later, fair enough, but, just now? Write, write, write.
