Does anyone know where I can get a cheap cot mattress that measures 120 x 60 cm (to fit an IKEA cot)? Thanks!

If you really can't afford a decent cot mattress what about buying mine? A baby really needs the best mattress you can afford.

120 x 60 is the standard cot size in the UK as well as IKEA if that helps at all

I got a basic foam mattress - £20.

You can spend a lot of money on foam plus springs plus hypoallergenic organic and all that, or you can make sure you wash the mattress cover now and again and turn it / change ends etc so it doesn't get too 'formed' around baby's weight.

I would respectfully disagree with fab and say that in my view that for the same ££ it is more important to get a new but basic mattress than a super second hand one. A little bit like car seats - obv a mattress is not going to save your child's life like a car seat would, but (to give some extreme examples) one which possibly has been getting mouldy in the attic / cat sitting on it / stale smoke etc etc is not worth saving money.

Fab - why should you get the best one you can afford?

(am going cot mattress shopping tomorrow as due on 23rd)

Just always thought, like Lexilicious, that the most important factor with cot mattresses was that they were new and clean for each and every baby (so threw out dd's old one..)

If I had bought a cot bed to use from birth up until about 5 years or so, I would have spent a bit more on the mattress. As it was I planned to co-sleep (we have a cot as a sidecar) so I just bought the cheapest mattress. DS spends more time on my bed anyway.

Yes, I'm thinking along the lines of rather new than posh but used too. Just saw that IKEA do one for 20 quid too (Kiddicare one sadly sold out) so might go for that or a slightly more expensive one. The cot's so small new baby will only be using it for 2 years max anyway. The ones my boys had were only 25 pounds but really good quality (Ikea too).

Barbie - because the baby will spend a lot of time in their cot and they should have a comfy bed.

Oh ok Fab. Thanks for that , think we'll be ok with our M&P's one so just as cot wont be exclusively baby's resting place have:

large moses basket (bought when pregnant with dd)

Cradle (given to us by cousin who had last dc a year before us)

Fisher Price swinger (bought as an extremely generous gift by my aunt when pregnant with dd) and

The large cot (bought when pregnant with dd)

I have bought new matresses for basket and cradle and am getting the cot one this week but havent and wont be spending a fortune.

You can get good value cot mattresses from here, but I've never used the site. You could also try ebay?

Can anyone please recommend specific models from babymattressonline.co.uk which are high quality and if possible reasonably priced (for cotbeds)?

I have been reading that the mattress should be firm and at least 10cm thick; and that foam are lighter and easier to maneuver.

Thanks!

Hi Gabby, yes you have read right a baby mattress should not be greater than 10cm (that is the legal limit). However, this does not mean that you NEED to go the the full 10cm. For example, cheaper foam mattresses need as much depth as possible due to the limited support and softness. If you go for a more expensive cot mattress such as a natural or organic one, these are often around 9cm thick because they use better quality materials and tend to be more breathable. If you are after a firm mattress which FSID recommended to reduce the risk of cot death then the organic and natural ones are much better in my opinion.

Here are a few websites to browse, I hope it helps :-)
