This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Cots and beds

Has anyone gone straight from cot to bunk beds?

DS1 is 2.5 and DS2 5mths. I want to get DS1 into a proper bed so that DS2 can have the cot.

As they will share a room once they are older they will at some point need to get bunk beds. I was thinking that rather than buying a toddler bed and then bunk beds I would just buy the bunk beds now. If I get the ones that split in to 2 singles then I'll just put one up for DS1 now.

However, by the time DS2 will need to be going in to a bed, DS1 will only be about 4-4.5. Is this too young for sleeping on a top bunk? Has anyone else used bunk beds at such a young age?

yes I did it and 4 is not too young for a top bunk. I got the Argos wooden set that split into two. is keeping them as single beds not an option?

I'm not sure that two proper sized single beds would fit in their bedroom - well they might but you wouldn't be able to walk round them/shut the door etc! The other option would be to get a toddler bed now and then when DS2 needs that, get the bunk beds and have one full size single and one toddler bed, which would fit better.

But I don't know if that is just faff and a waste of money in the long run....

Ds1 and dd shared a bedroom. Ds moved from cot straight to the top bunk at 3.5y. A couple of years later, when dd moved out of her cot at 3.5y she chose to sleep in the bottom bunk. We used to let them choose where they slept, only insisting that if one of them was ill then that one slept in the bottom bunk.

we went straight from co-sleeping with 2 DCs to bunkbeds in their own room - they were 4yrs10months and 3yrs3months...no problem!

DD who was on the top bunk had no problems (unfortunately ) climbing down in the middle of the night to find her way to our room.
