Hi everyone,

I have just joined the site, and would love to hear your stories.

I came off the pill in May, and started trying this month, how do you calm yourself in not getting your hopes up for AF not to arrives (she's due any where between tomorrow and Sunday)

I don't like waiting lol

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 15:55:33

Hiya, I came off the pill last week and this will be our first month of trying too. I know I will get my hopes up every single time! Can I ask, did you get 'normal' periods straight after stopping the pill?

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 16:12:13

Hiya, After coming off the pill I had my last 'pill' period as normal, then it took 30 days for my normal one to arrive (in the mean time given me loads of different symptoms). Its different for everyone but fingers crossed you wont have to wait to long x

I just cant stop thinking about the fact that I might be pregnant, its madness. lolout for the month which is helpful. (ptracker)

clareyfarey Thu 01-Aug-13 16:30:12

I've been on the pill for years, came off in jan and settled into a 'cycle' of sorts! Sometimes 28 days, sometimes 35 so I really struggle to know when's the best time. End up just DTD whenever I can.

I was hoping it would have happened sooner but I am on 2WW this week, AF due on 30th (for 28 day cycle) but won't test til after 35 days if that makes sense.

Good luck, and get lots of naughties in! smile Xx

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 16:37:07

Whats 2WW? lol

My Hubby works away so its as and when for us unfortunately

How long have you been trying for?

bushprincess Thu 01-Aug-13 16:52:37

Keepswimming1 .... I'm in the same boat... always a bonus when dh and I are in the same country at the same time... he managed not to fly until the day of the big O this month so hope we might be lucky!! if not then trying not to plan any travel for the August O!

good luck!!

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 16:57:57

Oh its nice to hear from someone in the same boat.

we dtd 3 days before O, so I'm really hoping its done the trick. if not then who know when our next chance will be.
I am having the odd symptom (horrible taste in my mouth and feeling sick) but am I just talking myself into it lol

Good luck to you all

clareyfarey Thu 01-Aug-13 17:01:41

Sorry, 2ww is 2 week wait from ovulation to hopefully being up the spout!

Been trying on and off since jan, stopped in April due to house stress but started again properly in July so this is first month really.

Was due Tuesday just gone if I had a 28 day cycle, or next Tuesday if it was 35. Ugh, hate waiting and driving myself mad with imaginary (??) symptoms.

Having your OH away a lot must be tough when you know it would be a good time to DTD

Xx

Tea1Sugar Thu 01-Aug-13 17:28:52

Hiya, I took my last pill on 24june, had usual withdrawal "bleed" followed by a proper Af 25 days later. We dtd days 7,9,11 and 13 which was actual ovulation day. 2po now and feeling dizzy as hell!

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 18:18:28

i think mine are due to af ... hope not but im getting cramps now .. oh how gutting, i don't think its the month for me
having oh away is frustrating for sure but its life its guess can't be helped

fingers crossed for everyone x

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 18:36:24

Thanks, swimming - glad to see you're another person who didn't have to wait too long for your cycle to return after the pill.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 20:38:56

Hiya all, I came off the pill end April and got my period in may on the "right" time, since its been regular and have a 31 cycles but I have no idea about ovulation date or any of that, total newbie to those things :D
Bought ovulation tests and are trying testing now but so fare negative every day sad
Good luck all, really hope August is your month smile

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 20:50:37

Ovulation is about two weeks after your period.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 20:52:17

Which should be today but sadly negative sad

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 20:59:33

The fertile time lasts for around a week though so regardless of what the test says you could increase dtd this week to be sure.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:04:14

Okay thanks smile dtd Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday lol so should perhaps do again tonight and in the weekend smile

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:09:47

Have you also kept an eye on cervical mucus? When you're fertile, it's usually clear.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:12:08

Oh gosh no not at all :O hmm don't really have it a lot, usually only around period and then it's quiet a lot and thick and sticky
I must take a closer look
Thank you so much for the advice smile

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:16:54

you keep at it girl. just enjoy and have fun.

im sure my period is on route but no sign as yet.
hopefully my hubby will be home for my next O.

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:17:42

No worries - look for Plan to get Pregnant by Zita West on Amazon, it's great.

keepswimming1 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:41:39

vjones - will check out amazon tomorrow. i never new that about the mucus i will see next month. cheers

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:53:05

Thanks all for great advices ... Must defn check out the book, perhaps I can even find a book in Danish so it would be easier for me to understand lol
Now almost time for bed and dtd, luckily we are having fun and enjoying that part lol

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:53:34

Glad to help.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 21:55:46

Vjones, hope your lucky too very soon

VJONES1985 Thu 01-Aug-13 22:05:28

Thank you. Am hoping for that hormone surge some women get after stopping the pill, when an egg is released after a few days. Going on holiday next week so it's a good time to take the opportunity to dtd at least every two days.

ArkadyRose Thu 01-Aug-13 22:23:20

Ovulation doesn't always happen 14 days after your last period started; if you have a short cycle then it can happen sooner - for instance, I have a 26-day cycle, so I ovulate on CD12. However AF always comes 14 days after ovulation. Sperm can live in the body for up to 5 days, but the egg only survives for about 12-48 hours after ovulation - so your fertile window is from 5 days pre-ovulation to 2 days after.

Some women can feel when they ovulate - they get a shart pain or discomfort on one side, called mittelschmerz. The best way to tell is by checking cervical mucus however; a few days before you ovulate it turns clear and resembles uncooked egg-white - it's what people mean when you see them referring to ewcm, meaning egg-white cervical mucus. On the day of ovulation it goes very watery and runny. The moment your fertile window is up, it turns thick and creamy; the moment you see that, you know your window of opportunity is up. If you've been dtd during your fertile period, you're now into the 2ww - 2-week wait. 14 days post-ovulation either AF will start, or you'll get a positive if you poas (pee on a stick - take a pregnancy test).

Hope that all helps. :-)

ArkadyRose Thu 01-Aug-13 22:25:50

If you're not used to checking your cervical mucus and aren't sure what you're looking for, you might find this helpful.

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 23:07:11

Arkadyrose thank you smile made sense so I better start checking that as well, tho I only notice that I get the thick sticky one sad hoping its because I haven't noticed the other ones...
But then I have a lot more knowledge for next month and then it's just trying again
Thanks again for great help smile

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 23:09:07

Vjones: hormone surge is yet another unfamiliar w

ItalianWiking84 Thu 01-Aug-13 23:09:46

Sorry big fingers, meant to say I hope it does the trick for you smile

2kidsintow Thu 01-Aug-13 23:11:38

You can get cheapy poas ovulation tests online that will tell you when you are due to ovulate. I found these helpful as I'm a control freak and used them when trying for DD1 and DD2.

I found that although I had a 'classic' 28 day cycle, I ovulated quite late.

I was one of the lucky ones and managed to catch on either the first or second month of trying.

Good luck. Have fun trying!

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 07:49:16

2kidsintow: I will go on Amazon tonight and see if I can find those sticks, thanks smile

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 09:17:31

VJones - Good luck and have a lovely holiday x
AF arrived for me this morning. how disappointing!!

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 09:37:21

And me!

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:15:45

Its so disappointing - I didn't expect to be so gutted, after all it was my first month.

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:22:49

It's totally natural to feel that way. I swing from thinking it's gonna take ages to conceive to doing it really quickly and I have to cling onto something because I'm a control freak. I will feel exactly the same.

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:26:21

keepswimming1- Sorry to hear that AF came, but I am sure next month will be your month

VJONES1985- Your going on holiday next week, right? Hopefully AF will be gone soon and you can enjoy your holiday and get some rest and relax smile

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:31:17

I guess on the positive note - af arrived bang on time, so I should be happy that after 12yrs on the pill I am regular.
My oh probably wont be in the country for my next O so will have to wait a little longer now. I think his due to leave a week before O day.

Italian - how long you been trying?

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:32:19

Yep, AF lasts two or three days so am looking forward to week one of ttc.

However, is it normal to be such a bundle of mixed emotion?? I'm excited but also so anxious and sometimes want to cry - I keep thinking of all the things I should do to increase our chances but at the same time am trying to stay relaxed. If I don't fall pregnant in a few months I will worry that we're doing something wrong or I've got something wrong with me sad

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:47:11

Vjones – how long have you been trying? And did you you come off the pill?
My hormones are all over the place, I stopped taking the pill in May. I read somewhere that 80% of people trying will conceive in the first year, so that has to be good odds right?

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:51:59

Swimming - I'm anxious because I'm just coming up to ttc cycle one. I came off the pill last week after 12 years and am worried about how long it'll take for my cycle to return. Next week will be ttc week one and the plan of action is to dtd every two days although I might increase this during my fertile time. Yes, 80% of couples conceive within a year but that seems a long time to me!

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:53:15

keepswimming1- Yep I had the same, mine came bang on time, so at least thats not an issue, lol....
Sorry that your OH is not in the country for next O, luckily my OH is working close by our home.

I have been off the pill since ultimo April, and trying for "real" since June smile So been a couple a months now... Hoping August is my month

VJONES1985 - I know how you are feeling. I am just the same, I wanna take it relaxed and let it just happen if it happens, but on the other side, I am a control freak and really wish that I could also in some way control this some more, lol. Until like middle of June, I didnt even go to any sites online or learned more about getting pregnant, but then my control freak took over and now I am here, :D
I do think it is normal, that in a society like ours, where we monitor and check everything, that we also want to check this....

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 10:57:11

VJONES1985 - I came off the pill after 15 years and my cycles has been regular from day one... My cycles is 31 days and so fare I have got my AF every month bang on the day

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:01:33

I'm glad you feel the same way and thanks for sharing your pill experience. Seems like Swimming has a similar story too, so that makes me feel better. I've been on Pregnacare and folic acid for about a month.

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:02:15

Yes it seem like a long time to me to - esp since my oh works away for 60% of the year. I was also on the pill for 12 years. I'm trying to stay positive (which isn't easy)
I found in my fertile week I was very very horny, my boobs were also very sore and I get a pain in my lower abdominal. then until my period I'm extremely hot and very nauseous still with sore boobs, which is really annoying as I get it into my head that I might be pregnant.
On the positive to af arriving today means I can now have a glass on wine tonight.

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:04:53

In your fertile week, did you increase dtd at all? Hopefully I will have similar symptoms like you, to help me better pinpoint my fertile week.

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:09:18

My oh went away 2 days before O day, and we dtd everyday up until then. There's no harm increasing your chances hun x
I've also brought those tablets but have started to take them yet, I thought I'd start when I know hubby will be in the county on O day.

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:16:33

My doctor recommended taking them asap so that they're in the system already so that's what I've done. Have heard conflicting stories about dtd the daily because some people reckon it can lower sperm production but I guess if it's only for a week, it might not have a big effect.

blueamber Fri 02-Aug-13 11:16:51

I think it's a myth that women are more fertile just after stopping the pill. It takes time for your body to start producing hormones by itself again. It can take a while for your body to produce enough hormones to start ovulation and it can even have some false starts: where it tries but doesn't get there. In my case, it took three months after stopping to ovulate. So don't worry if it takes some time.

Also, it depends on your cycle when you ovulate; not everyone ovulates two weeks after their period. It's usually 12-16 days before your next period, so if you have a regular cycles you can identify your fertile days that way.

Cervical mucus around the most fertile time represents egg white, it's clear and very stretchy (you can test how stretchy it is between your fingers) and usually lasts a few days leading up to ovulation.

If you DTD every other day you should usually catch the right time. Sperms survives inside you for at least 2 days, so with this method you always have some sperm waiting when you ovulate. When you get a positive on your OPK, you ovulate within 12-36 hours. Once you ovulate, the egg only survives on average 16 hours, so that's why it's best to DTD regularly.

blueamber Fri 02-Aug-13 11:21:14

I think DTD every day doesn't lower sperm production if your OH has healthy sperm.

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:32:27

I totally see what you mean, blueamber, about the body taking a while to produce hormones again. But what confuses me is the number of women I know who accidentally got pregnant after missing one or two pills. This suggests that the body can release an egg quite quickly after stopping the pill.

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:35:04

I haven't heard about dtd lowers sperm production. I will start taking my tablets from tonight :D I never thought about getting them in my system. Thanks VJONES

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:38:27

Folic acid especially is meant to be taken three months prior to conception but I think you'll be okay if you just start taking it asap.

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:52:07

I am thinking about perhaps going down and getting Pregnacare today, but I am already lousy to take the folic acid, so another pill to remember is not going to make it easy.
Oh fertile week, wish I could feel that, I think there is no changes at all with me. I only feel like a day before my AF come, but beside that all feels the same sad Wish I could get some kind of hint on when the best dates were... Still trying those conception tests that I bought from tesco (Is Tescos own brand ok?) But so fare negative all the way.
My doctor told me that sperm is filled up within 12 hours, so one can actually do it 2 a day with no problem. We love sex in the first place, so we prob do it like 5 times a week smile Hope thats enough, hihi. Otherwise we take the last 2 days as well.
blueamber: Thanks for the advices, I just wish I could check my Cervical mucus but usually there is nothing in the panties, so I think my best chances are the sticks.
Will try the Pregnacare tho, both to him and me smile

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 11:54:09

VJONES1985 - Studies have shown, that woman who accidentally get pregnant if there are missing a pill or 2 have usually missed more pills, but do not want to admit it and often, it is woman who want to become pregnant but don't want to take the talk with their OH. Trying to see if I can find the article again, tho I think it was from Denmark

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:09:03

Ah, that's interesting, Italian, and I didn't know that.

As for ovulation week, it seems to be around 12-14 days before AF so if your cycles are regular, you can work it out roughly from that. However, having sex at least every 2 days should cover it.

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:11:13

I was on the pill 12 years, I reckon I missed at least 1 pill every month and never had a scare (sometimes as many as 5) so it sounds like that might be the case - Italian.
VJones - I will be taking my folic acid from today now, thanks for the advise. I have also read tips to help get caught, they say that you should be eating healthy, cutting down your caffeine intake, aim to be a healthy weight, certain sex positions may help also.

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:20:53

I am still looking for the article, if I find it, I will post it.
12-14 days before should be this weekend, oi oi, better start having loads of DTD in the weekend lol.... Glad OH loooves it, haha....

I read that keeping the swimmers up for as long as possible helps, but I just cant lay there with the feeling of it leaking, it is just not me. Trying to not run to the toilet imminently after to give it a bit of time, but laying of whole night with it, I just cant....

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:24:38

Try putting a couple of pillows under your butt after, that might help, even if it is just for 10mins

clareyfarey Fri 02-Aug-13 12:33:41

I'm out for this month hmm onwards and upwards, maybe my hormones will settle down this month and I will be upduffed!

Only been off the pill just over 8 weeks so maybe I need more time to get back to normal. Have a 32 day cycle 2 months in a row so at least it's regular smile

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:37:18

keepswimming1 - hahahahaha, so defn gonna do that tonight.... Eventho OH will laugh loud and hard at me

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:38:10

clareyfarey I am sure next month is your month, and 8 weeks are not long no....

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:55:21

Clareyfarey - sorry to hear that, roll on next month xx

The thing us women go through a!!!

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:13:55

Yeah, I'll be doing the pillow thing too!

Aww, I was hanging on to the thought that I might be one of the lucky ones this month after just stopping the pill but the thought of dtd so regularly and possibly not even releasing an egg at all this month is making me a bit sad!

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:16:10

VJONES1985 You could be one of the lucky on, of course :D I am cheering for you....

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:25:39

Hey VJONES don't be sad, theres every chance you are the lucky one here. You could be in your fertile window very soon, dont give up hope!!

You want the swimmers to be able to swim down rather than an uphill struggle!

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:32:27

Thanks ladies - I am thinking of you both too!

Here's an interesting thing my friend told me - after the guy has ejaculated, the woman should orgasm because this widens the cervix and encourages more semen through. What do you reckon? She said she made herself orgasm using a vibrator after her husband had ejaculated when they were ttc.

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:37:21

I've never heard it before, I guess anything is possible though!

Hey I have just been to the loo and notice af is very light (I mean very light) do you think I could still be in with a chance? unless she comes thick and fast in the mean time of course.

blueamber Fri 02-Aug-13 13:38:07

Italian, pregnacare has enough folic acid in so if you take those you wont have to take the folic acid as well.

What might help you to recognise your fertile days is cervical position. This should be a pretty clear sign once you start understanding how it works. It does involve feeling the cervix with your finger. When you're not in your fertile time, its lower down, feels hard and the opening is closed. Then closer to your fertile time, it rises, goes softer and the opening goes wider. If you google it it will give you more info.

Also, you don't have to keep the sperm in. Just lying down for 5 minutes is enough. The sperm will immediately swim up the cervix anyway. The stuff that comes out is the fluid, not the swimmers. It's also best to go to the toilet after sex to prevent urinary infections.

blueamber Fri 02-Aug-13 13:39:10

There is no proof orgasms increase the chance of conception, but it does make dtd more fun smile

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:43:02

Ah cool, thanks blueamber!

Yes, forgot to mention that to you, Italian, regarding Pregnacare containing enough folic acid. I have to have extra because I'm diabetic bit for the average person, just the Pregnacare on its own is enough.

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:56:38

blueamber Thanks for the description, makes it more understandable now... And happy to know, that 5 minutes laying down can do the trick smile Seems more durable than laying the whole night...

Never heard that one with orgasm, and I usually always get an orgasm under dtd, so would not fancy having to do it right after again...

Thanks also for the advice on folic acid, then it is just my iron and vit C I need to take with the pregnacare, I should be able to manage that lol

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:57:59

keepswimming1 I have heard of some where they think they have their AF and then in reality didnt have it, so might be a small chance of that smile

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 14:03:38

I'll try not to get my hopes up - I'm sure she will be back !!

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 17:09:12

Just found clear blue ovalation pack with 20 sticks in it in clearance sale at tesco for 8 pounds, normal price 35 ... So bought them, they look a lot easier than the tesco own brand ones smile

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 18:04:49

Oh well done. I used the morrisons ones last month, not bad. Though by my o day oh had left the country but couldnt resist on trying them out lol
God I sound like a nut job.....

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 19:39:41

Could someone tell me more about opks please? What actually comes in a packet? What do you do with them and how do they work? Also, how much should I expect to pay? Thanks.

jaykay987 Fri 02-Aug-13 19:54:09

The CB ones are quite expensive though can be found on sale sometimes.

You get test sticks (how many depends on which packet you buy) and a "holder". The instructions tell you when to start testing (depends on your cycle length) so you don't start testing to late or too early.

You put a stick into the holder each morning and the POAS. They either show nothing, high or peak fertility. Typically you get two days high then two days peak (though this does not work for everyone there's a whole other thread about that). High is a flashing smiley face, peak is a solid smiley face.

Then you stop testing until the next month.

There are other varieties which are much cheaper but some people find them harder to read. I'm sure someone with experience of these can tell you more.

I've used CB ones this month and will do so again next month, as I know feel I understand my body better, but the cost would definitely prevent me using them every month.

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 20:02:28

Thank you, that's helped a lot. How much are the cb ones?

ItalianWiking84 Fri 02-Aug-13 20:06:39

I found them on clearance today in my local tesco for 8 pounds but they were normally 35 pound :O

VJONES1985 Fri 02-Aug-13 20:43:27

Hmm, don't think I'll be buying them anytime soon then!

keepswimming1 Fri 02-Aug-13 22:03:10

I paid 4 pound for morrisons, they are easy enough to under stand but sounds like cb are much easier. I brought them just to try them out, you only get 5 in a pk so you need to understand your cycle really.

ItalianWiking84 Sat 03-Aug-13 00:01:22

I just tried the cb this night and must admit they are really easy to use and follow... So do think they are the price worth, or at least when on sale smile

blueamber Sat 03-Aug-13 13:08:41

Amazon sells cb ones, £21 for 20 sticks, which should last 2 months. They're the cb advanced.

ItalianWiking84 Sat 03-Aug-13 13:42:47

Thanks blueamber, amazon it is next month ;)

ItalianWiking84 Sat 03-Aug-13 21:33:10

Yai
Happy smiley today on my stick smile
