coil dilemma..

Hey, I am due to have my Mirena coil removed in Nov '10. However I am considering having it removed earlier as I am worried how long it will take to conceive (my 1st). I have not had any periods since having it put in ( 5 yrs ago)

Any help with how long it has taken people to conceive would be really appreciated.

thanks :0)

Hi It took me 2 months to conceive DS2 after having my Mirena taken out. Just had my second one out to try for number 3 and on month 3 at the mo - am quite a bit older now though !
One thing to know that no-one told me is that you can bleed very heavily when it is removed - first time I literally thought i was haemorrhaging (sp?) Anyway that is an aside - my advice from seeing plenty of friends thinking they can just pick when to get pregnant and then struggling is have it taken out adn get on wiht it! Is there a reason you want to wait till Nov?

yeah, I'd agree, get it taken out now and try and get your cycle and system sorted, even if you do decide to wait till November to start trying.

Good luck

thanks people :0) Well I am in my first year of my teaching career so need to really finish my Newly Qualified Teacher year so that I can go back to teaching straight away without having to worry about completing it. So if I have it out in November it means I can complete it before baby is due (if I get preggers straight away!)

I think I will have it taken out earlier as you never know how long it will take until you try !

thanks

wow maduggar! that's super quick! was it with your first? Previously the doc has said that it is usual to let the body get back into normal cycles before trying for little one..

Hi! I'm having my mirena out next week, so thanks for this post! I'm relieved to hear that taking it out will be a breeze, although less so about the bleeding. We're going to just shag for Britain and see how things go initially after taking it out. This is our first time trying, so incredibly nervous about it all!

By the way, what did the doc want to discuss about taking it out? My GPs gave always been nervous about it, so I had it in (and will have it out) at a Family Planning clinic, who has been very casual about the whole thing.

Good luck with your removal! (And everything else to follow!)

hey almostknockedupgirl

yeah the bleeding bit is not a good bit to look forward to as haven't had it for 5 years and prior to mirena practically collapsed for the whole duration lol

GP- well we went for pre conceiving advice, just told me what not to eat whilst trying ( too much tuna, packaged salads) and that was it really. He advised to use barrier method until periods back to normal.. hmmm doubt that will happen lol.

We shall have to keep each other posted as its our first time trying too!

Hi alien82. Just wanted to let you know that I had my mirena out on Friday, and it was a breeze, just like ljg72 said! Apart from the fumbling with the speculum (lovely...), I barely felt anything. And my period came the following day (just a couple days early), so now I'm officially TTC. The doctor at the Family Planning clinic I went to (is it just me, or do GPs always seem to get a bit nervous about coils?) was most unfussed about waiting to regularise cycles etc, and told me if I was healthy and used to have normal cycles before, there's no reason why I shouldn't just get on with it. Which is exactly what the hubs and I are doing.

Hope all goes well for you in your appointment to have it out!

Hi almostknockedupgirl
That is great to hear that it went well and was painless! I have mine this Weds and am soo nervous! I can't remember how cycles were apart from when I was on the pill so they were not really "real" timings! Think we are just going to go for it like you guys
Be great to keep in touch with our progress

I hope you guys haven't been reading some of the other scarey coil threads that have popped up on the front page on the conception threads at the mo. I'd have been crapping myself if I saw them before Friday. But then, 'tis a great pity for those whose threads get lost, and I do feel sorry for what some of them went through.

Hope it all goes wonderfully for you both. If they can grab the threads easily, it doesn't hurt a bit. Only the tiniest odd tingle. And then if both your periods come straight away like mine did (fingers crossed) we can be mirena/ttc buddies

One other tip, well for me at least - deeply penetrative positions have suddenly become much more enjoyable. And I hadn't even realised they were a pain before really. I plan to enjoy this newfound benefit as much as possible...

Hello, can i join in too?
I had been in a quandry for months whether to get the coil taken out. Only had it in a year.. but i had really bad headaches (which i know now must have been that) and we weren't enjoying sex with it there...
almostknockedupgirl i know exactly what you mean! After the other nights activities, i can't believe i put up with it for so long!
Think i would have had it removed even if wasn't ttc - BUT i am still in discussion with my DH as he's not as up for it as i am
So i can't officially be on this ttc thread yet!
But just to say - what to expect:
19th May: removal didn't hurt
20th May: loads of bleeding (grim)
17th June: (just like the nurse said i would get a period one month after and thats how i would know my cycle was already back to normal), got period. Still going strong!
So atleast i know once i have convinced DH, my cycles are ready to go!
Like you i have no had a 'period' for years, i've always been on the pill or pregnant!
I have 2DC already, so would love to complete my little tribe

Well I had the coil out at 5.30 and had craps for a while as they couldnt find the threads for a while came in the house and feel asleep (didnt sleep last night after being to nervous about today having it out)and woke up feeling suprisingly good!
I know the worst maybe to be come but I am glad its out now as DH said he cant wait.

Im looking forward to what ever comes next now x

I got pregnant with mine still in !! Hadn't had a period since before ds was born, had it put in at 6 week check, then got pg when he was 13 months old with dd2. The coil had slipped into my cervix.

Look on the face of the midwife when she said "and when was your last period?" and I said "oooh 23 months ago". How pregnant did that make me???

This was my 3rd baby I was 31.

But I had always been one of these people who only had to sit on the same chair as my dh to get pregnant! Sent him for the snip after that!!
