False positive - is there such a thing?

Today is 10 DPO. I thought/hoped i might be pregnant though it seems quite unlikely given it is our first proper month of trying.

Have been trying v hard not to symptom spot though is difficult, however have mega sore boobs ( this was my first indicator when preg with DD1)

I took a test this mrning - just a cheapie one from ebay. I got two lines! The second (important one) appeared v slowly and was very faint. I thought i was imagining it and left it at that. I went back to put it in the bin, maybe 10/12 mins after and the second line was very dark and def there.
The instruction say not to read test after 10 mins.

So.....what do you think?

Can you get a false positive after leaving it for longer than is stated?

yes you can, you can get an evaporation line which might appear after the time you are supposed to read the test in.

I would do another in the morning. Good luck.

You can get evaporation lines, but in my experience they tend to be quite faint, not dark like yours. I think it's quite likely to be positive, but you probably need to wait a few more days and do another one to be absolutely certain.

Thanks both. I didnt look at the time so dont know exactly how long it was before line appeared, was so convinced that it was too early. It was only afterwards that counting the minutes seemed like a good idea!!

As you suggest will do another...maybe in the morning or midweek if i can hold out that long!

This happened to me a few months ago (definite line but came up too late - I had set it aside and forgotten about it). To be honest I still don't know whether I was or not; I did the test because I was bleeding a lot at an odd time and wondered whether it was an early miscarriage - a few days later it was definitely negative (as expected, obviously). Sorry that's not very helpful! I'd guess you probably are pregnant though, since the timing is right for it to be only just detectable. Try again tomorrow maybe?

Some things I read said that 'evaporation lines' are always grey, not pink (or blue, or whatever colour it's meant to be), if that helps.

So as expected, I caved and re-tested this morning.

Got much the same result. At about 8 mins asked DH how many lines he could see and we agreed 2...but only just. Def there but faint.
