Am I going mad? I feel like I get symptoms of AF and then it doesn't come...

I'm really starting to get bothered by this. I have irregular periods and am due to have PCOS tests done in a few weeks time. But the thing I have noticed (or I think I have noticed, it's entirely possible I'm just obsessing and driving myself insane) is that I seem to get symptoms of my period - bloating, the occasional cramp - at what would be the 'right' time (eg about a week before it's due) but then AF itself doesn't come. In some cases for another 3 or 4 weeks, though last time it was 'only' 2 weeks late...

If my period really did only come once every 8 weeks, I might even begin to assume there was something worng on one side only - I have heard (though this could be bollocks??) that this can happen. But as I say, it isn't always every eight weeks, sometimes it's every 6 or so.

I'm starting to get quite down about this as I desperately want my periods to regulate before we start TTC. This month I really thought AF was coming and now it hasn't.

Hi emerald, sorry spotted this thread last night but I was tired and needed to get to bed. But here I am now and I completely understand what you are going through. I too have very irregular periods, for example my last period came almost 7 weeks after the previous one and that previous one came only 29 days after the one before that (IYSWIM?).

I too get symptoms of AF at the 'right' time that it is due ie, I always get really hungry, my tummy bloats, slight cramps, get really stroppy, sore boobs, all in the week before my AF is supposedly due, but then it doesn't come and the symptoms carry on for however long until it does(not much fun), which could be weeks!!

I have been tested for PCOS and have had a scan but nothing has shown up. So I guess I'm stuck with it. I don't mind not having a period every month but I just wish there was some regularity to it, especially now I'm ttc, but they are all over the place and there's no predicting just when AF will come!

Hope I've made some sense .

Thank you mampam! (and don't worry, I have a brilliant habit of re-posting the same stuff too!!)

Am sorry to hear you're having the same trouble as me... it is kind of miserable isn't it? I just feel like I don't 'work' properly

Has anyone suggested any other possible causes to you other than the PCOS that you were neg. for? I'm too much of a control freak to not need answers!!! I just don't understand how it can seem as though AF is due and then it doesn't show up for no good reason...

Good luck with ttc I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

No, have had no other possible causes suggested to me. I was tested for PCOS because as well as irregular periods I have started to get more hairy, not much so that anyone would notice but just enough for me to notice (IYSWIM?) and for the first time in my life (I'm 29) I have got spots. But surely if I had a hormone imbalance this would have shown up in the blood test I had???

I guess really the next step is for me to go back to GP and ask for more to be done to find out why I'm like this. It's bad enough having AF and all that comes with it let alone all the symptoms dragging on for weeks. I also get really emotional, the slightest thing setting me off in tears (not like me at all), the only way I can describe it is like pent up hormones that would be released with AF but are building up and up the longer that AF doesn't arrive.

That probably doesn't make much sense but I know what I mean!!

I do worry though that they will stop altogether, things go through my mind like early menopause and things like that. I would like to know if there is something wrong and if I will ever be able to conceive again because if not then I'd rather know now than get down the line and have gone through all the heartache each month of wondering if I'm PG and then not being PG.

Let me know how it turns out for you emerald. xx
