A message to those naughty people who test too early and its negative then they fish test out of the bin the next day and its positive......

Yes I am one of those people. (Bad Thandeka!)

But this "positive" is a really obvious purple line not a faint one, and it is the right colour not a white evaporation line.

So my question is this:

If any of you have ever found yourself in same boat how many of you later went on to test properly positive or was it truly a false positive from reading it way too late!

(Am 32 days post an MMC so it may even be something annoying like residual HCG in system- although I was testing -ve from 14 days- but then I didn't fish those tests out of the bin)

Wikipedia tells me:
[edit] False positives
False positive test results may occur for several reasons. These include: errors of test application, use of drugs containing the assay molecule, and non-pregnant production of the assay molecule.

Spurious evaporation lines may appear on many home pregnancy tests if read after the suggested 3?5 minute window or reaction time, independent of an actual pregnancy. False positives may also appear on tests used past their expiration date.

A woman who has been given an hCG injection as part of infertility treatment will test positive on pregnancy tests that assay hCG, regardless of her actual pregnancy status. However, some infertility drugs (e.g., clomid) do not contain the hCG hormone.[13]

Some diseases of the liver, cancers, and other medical conditions may produce elevated hCG and thus cause a false positive pregnancy test. These include choriocarcinoma and other germ cell tumors, IgA deficiencies, heterophile antibodies, enterocystoplasties, gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD), and gestational trophoblastic neoplasms (GTN). (See Human chorionic gonadotropin.)

Oh great.

Hello didnt want to leave your post unanswered. I think the only answer is to test again, maybe with one of the digital ones? all i can add is that everytime i have fished a neg test out of the bin (as we have at some point i'm sure!!) it has stayed negative and also i have kept all my previous positive tests and very little about any of them has changed and the oldest test is 9yrs old!!
good luck and i have my fingers firmly crossed for you! xx

Am 9DPO today and I know it is soooo early to test (very bad me) and when I took the test I was 8DPO. Its just because it is sooooo obviously now a positive.

Hmmmmm will try and hang on for FMU tommorrow. I did get a the faintest faintest positive at 10DPO last time so fingers crossed. Or sod it I am off to wee on two different types of ebay cheapies and see what happens!

Mine went positive after time limit last week, so followed by a positive on a clearblue digital saying pregnant 1-2 weeks a few days later.

Digital IS the only way!

I do have a CB digital at home (yannoo the one you save for special occasions!) Will break that one out on Tuesday (day AF due!)

Currently waiting on oven timer (10mins) to read TWO different ebay cheapies. I shall ONLY take the 10 min time limit and shall ignore after (yeah right!)

Oooh oven beeping!.....

Mine were the tesco ones last week that were reading pos after time limit, and also the ebay cheapie strips. I would say if they have colour its positive, even after time limit!

balls well that hasn't helped! One test very very very very very faint positive (ultra early 10miu) one test negative (but this is same test that gave positive after leaving it a day- so now will keep an eye on them- so much for ignoring them after the time limit!)

Oh and thinking about it I got a negative with the same ultra early test that is now testing a very very very faint positive so this means it can't be residual HCG from the miscarriage.

Right lets pray its not a chemical pregancy and that its a sticky one this time if the reading on the ultra early test is right! Gulp! Handholding til tuesday when period is due please!

Sorry but i had this with sainsburys tests and they were definitely evap lines as time proved i was not pregnant.

The line was a very convincing colour too but i just did a digital one and it was negative.

Good luck though and fingers crossed you get a positive result when you test but do throw tests far away once the magic window of time has passed.

Thanks guys. So sorry to hear that Divvy - keeping fingers crossed for next cycle for you (Sometimes I wish scientists would develop genetically engineered velcro embryos. Like your womb is one side of velcro and the emby the other- then they would all be sticky! But then scientists also need to invent something that will keep them growing and their heart beating too- am thinking mini womb supplies of baby bio and mini defibrillators- whatcha think!?)
(sorry am being flippant- humour gets me through MMC grief but I do get that other people don't share my sense of humour so apologies if I upset anyone!)

P.S I agree the tesco ones are good- I have a spare one of those somewhere to..... (but no- going to hold off til Tuesday now.

This happened to me with dd (4 next week). We hadn;'t been trying but I tested out of suspicion and thought it was -ve and put it in the bin. Still no af a day later so did another test which was definite bfp - then when I looked in the bin that was a definite bfp too!

So it does happen. Congrats to you and prayers for a sticky one. Hope I get my bfp this month too... x

Thanks Anniemac- I possibly have had the faintest faintest positive within the timelimit too now but annoyingly it disappeared outside of the timelimit!! Haha now I dont know what to think. Will try and hold on for FMU on Monday or Tuesday.

Aww thanks Plumbummum (brill name btw Plumbum is one of my fave words and always made me smile in chemistry!) and yay for your SIL.

Fingers firmly crossed. Even if AF does come at least it means my cycle is vaguely back to normal and fingers will be crossed for next month.

I was actually surprised when she told me as I had advised her to wait at least a month as then she would have a date to work from, but it worked out, so good luck for you

But if you can work out when you ovulate you add two weeks before ov and how ever many weeks post ov you are to work it out. If that makes sense! Did your SIL chart?

I have irregular ov so is useful for me to know when I ovulate. When I got pregnant last time I ovulated on day 24. Had I not known this docs could have panicked me for not being a week and a half further along than I should have been, IYSWIM.

ah well a little update about my POAS experiments:

The test I did yday (with the same brand test I got the evaporation line/false positive the day before)- nothing nada nada- even 24 hours later no line at all. So prob indiactes was more likely duff test initially.

Then I repeated a test with FMU (with the same brand test as I got faint faint faint positive in the timeframe (that later disapeared!) yesterday). This morning with FMU really really can't tell if there is a line there or not so going to take it as a not. So basically still in limbo til Tuesday night!

Will crack out the CB digital on Wednesday if AF hasn't arrived by then for the definitive answer- just don't want to waste it now as I know it is too early. My luteal phase is 12days and last time I got faint positives from 12 days but shadow squint possibly imagination lines from 10dpo!

Ho hum. In a way am a bit relieved it is looking more likely -ve than +ve at mo as it means I can forget about it until tues/wed. If it was the other way round I would be crapping it about possible CP etc- Oh the dangers of early testing. We all know its bad- I just wished I had the self control not too!
