removing T380 coil

Hi

this isn't really a question, but i have often searched through threads on this site and have found the threads useful when i had questions i couldn't ask anyone else! this is just about my personal experience and i know everyone is a bit different but i hoped it might be useful.

A couple of weeks ago i was booked in to have my coil removed. it's a T 380 (non-hormone one).

I had mine fitted a couple of years ago at the same time that i had a termination done. I'm not proud of what i did, and as it happens, it wasn't a good decision for me emotionally. but its a very personal one and i'm not posting here to debate the rights of wrongs of that.

the reason i am posting is that the termination was very painful (i wasn't sedated) and so i associated having the coil fitted with being in a lot of pain.

i really worked myself up into a state about having it removed.

I had absolutely no trouble with it while it was fitted - for me, it was the perfect choice of contraceptive.

i just wanted to say if any other woman is in a similar position, that having it removed was a real non-issue.

it was a lot like having a smear test, it didn't hurt. it took about 2-3 mins.

I had it removed by my GP and she used a speculum like when you have a smear test to err... open you up and then they just gently pull on the "coil threads" to remove the coil. you can feel it, but i wouldn't say its at all painful. to be honest, the worst part was the very cold speculum! i had my ds with me, he was in the buggey and i was able to chat to him while it was being removed.

i had no cramps or discomfort following the removal and my periods have been normal ever since. they are noticeably less crampy and lighter than when i had a coil fitted.

i was so uncomfortable with the decision i made to have the termination and therefore the circumstances in which i had my coil fitted, that i felt unable to talk to anyone about what it would be like to have it removed. and most people just likened the removal to the sensation of hving it fitted, which wasn't helpful to me.

i hope someone has managed to get something useful from this post. i would be willing to answer further questions if anyone feels i could help.

Thank you wethree,

I found it useful to read!

(I'm having mine taken out tomorrow but I've had one taken out before - when it came to the end of its life and needed to be replaced with this one - so I kinda know what to expect but it was still good to be reminded by you. Thanks!)
