Me and dp have been ttc for a year now, i know that doe4snt sound that long compared to some people but it feels like forever. I have a son from a previous relationship and it took me 2 years to get pregnant with him so now i believe i must have some underlying problem as to why its not happening with dp too (he has a daughter from previous relationship who was concieved no probs). I know he could still have probs but the chances are its me or both of us not just him, right?? well im overweight (now started dieting) and stressed which the practice nurse says will stop me conciveving but im still having regular periods so surely cant be that stressed as before when had major stress issues i have been all over with periods etc. anyway, long and short of it is the nurse refuses to do any hormone tests until i loose some weight and am not stressed! Easier said than done, the weight is slowly shifting but the reason i am stressed is i have a very demanding (physically and mentally) autistic son so if she expects that stress to go before she does tests ill never get the tests!! dopctor is even worse and doctor insists she wont look into matters until i am 35!! Im only 28 now so was 27 when started ttc - should i have to wait 8 years??? think not!!! plus its not my fault if i have a demanding child and if i have regular periods then surely thats not a problem??
does anyone know if you can get these hormone tests done privately, and if so how much wopuld i be looking at? if i had them done privately could i then go back to gp with results and go back on nhs for help etc for any probs that have been found (if there is any!) or would i have to stay private?
I just want another baby and cant try forever as its making me down and i am trying to loose the weight as i know im well overweight but still having regular periods and about the same weight i was when concieved son so its not impossible, though guess that may be why it took so long with my son??
i have read the symptoms of pcos and worry i may have a mild form of that? is that possible? if so would hormone tests pick that up?
also i have some orlistat tablets from last year when trying to loose weight (or maybe year before - still in date though) i was thinking of taking those to help loose weight now but worry that if i do it could lead to problems if i get pregnant whilst taking them and stop it may still influence baby - might google that actually see if i can find anything!
so really im saying can i join you all? and has anyone any advice of what i should do next? or info on costs to go private etc for tests?

I'd initially find another GP practice; the one that you're currently under is not helpful at all (and that's an understatement).

You can have blood tests done privately; the usual ones are day 3 and day 21. Blood tests may detect the LH/FSH imbalance often seen with PCOS. Another test that could be done is an internal ultrasound scan to assess the state of your uterine cavity and ovaries.

any idea how expensive they would be private?? didnt think you could change gp's? im in a small village where the doctors has two gp's the bloke is marginally better than the woman but they tend to agree with each other so only seen the woman so far, may speak to the bloke about it when go back in march for my iron levels checked again!
that fsh imbalance, would that be picked up if i did those tests you can buy onebay that test for that? they just say they are 23 tests to show fsh levels and if they are high or low (cant remember which!) its likely to mean age related low hormones something linked to menopause or infertility?? is that right? is it worth me buying one of those do you think?? i just worry about throwing money at everything that may help and being skint and still not pregnant i know some things are just marketted well and probably rubbish!

thanks for your reply x

Is there another doctor's in a nearby village? If so you can just change and go register there instead

jenny i asked my gp if weight was an issue when trying to concieve and she told me that only if you were morbidly obese with a bmi over 40. something like that. i agree with atilla your gp and nurse sound just awful and think that changing would make the world of difference. you are intittled to a second opinion and they are wrong to refuse you for a simple blood test that maybe could stop you being so stressed re ttc. do uou track your cycle? if you have regular cycles then i would reccomend it might help while your waiting for your gp to help.

Would certainly not be using the services of your current GP Practice, they sound awful.

Do change GP practice - its quite easy to do these days.

Do not buy any online tests - these are a waste of money and time. Have the blood tests done properly via your new GP practice (also it will be free). A day 3 blood test would compare the level of LH against FSH; if the level of LH was higher than that of FSH this could be one possible indicator of PCOS.

Agree that you should change GPs, but just to answer your question, I think you would pay between £75 and £100 for blood tests done privately. Tbh - lots of private clinics recommend you get all these tests done on the NHS before you go and see them, so that you can save some money.

Am appalled that you can't be referred for treatment until you're 35! I know that some trusts have this policy, but it seems ridiculous to me.

Good luck with the weight loss!
