'Boy' sperm swim faster than 'girl' sperm, so when should I try??

Hey don't know if anyone has any answers but I heard that male sperm swim a lot faster than the female, however then male ones dont last as long, so if your TTC ds then surely you should wait until the end of ovulation. How long does this take?? Obviously I don't mind whether I have dd or ds, any healthy dc is what I want. Is this true or a old wives tale?

Wait until ovulation (when your body temperature hits 37 C) and then go for it like bunnies

Your body temperature is 36 C until ovulation and then shoots up to 37 C and stays there until AF, when it comes back to 36 C.

So any time between ov. and AF you can get pregnant?

I didnt realise how little i knew about my own body until now! With dd we werent trying, so she just kind of 'came along' if you know what i mean!!

No, because the egg dies after only about 12 hours so you have to time it quite well. Aim for the day of ovulation and possibly the day before if you want a boy. By a couple of days after (up to AF) there is no egg around, so no chance of conceiving. At least that is how I understand it! HTH

As far as I understood it. Girl sperm lasts longer than boy sperm.
So the boys run like hell then die whereas the girls take their time but last till the end.

So if you want a girl aim to "do it" before you ov and if you want boy sperm "do it" as or just after you ov.

Not strictly true Cote D'azur. Women's temps vary (mine is 35ish and then 37ish post ov) - its true temps rise post ovulation but if you wait for the temp rise its probably too late to get pregnant as the temp rise is caused by the heat producing progesterone from the corpus luteum (empty follicle the egg was released from). So by the time your body registers the temp rise the egg is likely dead and gone.

CoteDAzur · 20/12/2008 13:32

My own experience (16 weeks with future DS) and those of quite a few other people I know, including my mother, would disagree that it's too late to BD once you've seen temp rise.

Thandeka · 20/12/2008 19:59

wow! Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I do think you are the exception rather than the rule- common consensus is after temp has risen it is most likely too late (but not impossible- the egg is viable for up to 24 hours post ovulation). I studied reproductive physiology at university and have used FAM for past three years and everything I have read has pointed to best time to get pregnant is intercourse timed in the three days before ovulation as after temp rise you are generally much less likely to get pregnant (although obviously not impossible). I just felt I had to point it out on this thread incase OP focused all her efforts on after temp rise potentially reducing her chances in a given month.

But this ttc malarky is a very complicated & confusing business anyhow- I am confused as to how fertility friend has put me as ovulating before my persona registered the LH surge! Not supposed to be that way round! So I totally accept that pregnancy can and will occur after temp rise but just wanted to clarify it a bit further- as your first post could be interpreted as ovulation occurs on same day as temp rise- when technically its usually the day before, as the corpus luteum needs time to start producing the progesterone. Sorry its the anal teacher in me!

Anyhow best of luck with the pregnancy and to all trying to concieve sons!

I swear by looking out for the goo. It is thick like egg white and you get it for about 3 days prior to ov. Once you get this go for it.

We have done and it has worked - three times - in the first month. I appreciate we are very lucky but my cycles are irregular and temp taking was a PITA.

Thandeka · 20/12/2008 20:14

Hurrah for goo! Sadly I get hardly any so have to look to use other methods.

Oh and response to the OP's question about concieving a boy there is supposed to be something in alkaline vaginas being more conducive to boys. (some sites recomend bicarb douches- not sure thats a good idea!) google shettles method for more info.

Wow, thanks everyone! Thandeka good to have a pro on the thread, but just as goos to have people who have tried and have the experience too!

I didn't realise that your temp changes after ovulation (is this something that every woman knows apart from me?) bu also good to know that best chances of a boy is the day of ovulation (did i understand that right?). Not that I mind whether I have dd or ds, but i already have 17month dd so would be nice to have ds next, all you can do is try right!! The whole thing is a gamble!!

Tinsel the goo, yeah I know that, so as soon as you get this is a good time to go?!! Do you mind me asking whther you have dd or ds??

A good a book to read is 'Choosing the sex of your baby - the natural way' by Hazel Chsterman-Phillips. She explains it in easy to read detail.

Haha I just thought more about the bicarb douches and suddenly had an image of those volcano science experiments we did at school.

Vaginacano- perish the thought!

hehe! Ive also heard that certain foods can encourage boy/girl pregnancies, but surely this would need DP to eat these foods?! DP also said that he heard having sex outside in the cold will encourage a boy!!! Now im not sure whether this really is true or DP is setting me up here!!

My temp never gets to 37 - around 36 pre ovulation and 36.5 post, and the goo comes the day before temp rise. hmmmm.

Report
Thandeka · 22/12/2008 17:45

sounds entirely normal to me.
Last day of goo usually coincides with ov (but not always as its due to oestrogen levels and sometimes you can get small amounts post ov) and the temps also seem fine-my best mates temps are all 35ish and hit 35.9 at ov (I keep telling her its coz she is cold blooded!)- at least you are getting a temp raise- not getting one can be a sign you aint ovulating.

oneyummymummy · 22/12/2008 22:46

Im gonna have to start taking my temperature more then, like everyday! Because I have no idea what my temp is! So I should be worried if it doesn't change then? When are you supposed to take your temp, like first thing in the morning?

I can get goo just before my AF , what does this mean?

OP posts:

Thandeka · 23/12/2008 16:03

You take your BBT (basal body temp) at the same time every morning before you do anything else (getting out of bed for a morning wee can affect the temp. I usually take mine at 7am. Join fertilityfriend.com for reading info about charting.

Goo before AF can also be normal- is due to oestrogen but depends on whether is stretchy stringy goo (fertile) or just white creamy goo (non fertile or even thrush!)

Clear 'mucus' like goo! Does that mean im really fertile?!

Thanks for the link thandeka !

When I was temping, my temperature never changed that much just by getting out of bed. And stayed pretty much the same throughout the day.

At ovulation there was a jump, and temp stayed there until AF.

I really don't think anyone really has to take temp as soon as they awake, in bed.

I know for a fact that this turns DH/DPs off and makes you look like a loonie hellbent on conceiving

Although you don't have to have sex outside, your DP should keep his privates cool by not wearing tight fitting pants, loose cottom boxers should do it, no hot showers, def no baths and no excessive sex or masturbation! Heat kills boy sperm.

For a girl - do the opposite

I am only hypothesising according to the Shettles method and the book I read. Have no idea if it works.

I do mine first thing in the morning because mine varies during the day and it helps with accurate reading.

My DH isnt bothered by it in slightest and its second nature to me now.
