getting pg after depo injection

franfoxy2003 · 16/07/2008 21:46

I have been on the depo injection for 6 months and it ran out nearly 3 weeks ago. I got the injection cos i had 2 m/c in 6 months and wanted to give body a rest.

I have read that it can take up to 2 years to get pg! and up to 6 months for periods to return!!!

anyone had any experiences? I feel pg sore boobs sickness and tiredness and needing the toilet every 2 mins but surely I cant be cos i havent had a period yet??????

It can take a long time for fertility to return after the depo.
This says it is an average of 5.5 months from last injection running out

link to depo study

You could be pregnant, but it is probably unlikely, why not do a test to set you mind at rest?

I think the implant is different, it is continually releasing the drug, so when it is removed fertility returns quickly, with the depo the whole dose is injected into your muscle, and your body then has break it all down, which can take a while.

Well it says 5.5 months on average. I think for me it was much more than that - maybe 9/ 10 months from last depot to getting pregnant.

It was about 7 months for me, and that was after only one injection.

I'm sure a robust study is going to be more helpful than this, but I am going to share anyway. I took the depo jab for about 5.5 years. Last one in Nov 2004, so effect was gone in Feb 2005 sometime. Periods resumed very sporadically within 45 days. Started taking temperature each morning to figure out when/if I would be ovulating again, and was still taking temps to see when it would start in July 2005 when I realised my temp was not coming down because I was pg!!

sum: Periods in 45 days, pg in 5 months. MUCH faster than I thought!!

Good luck

Hi Fanfoxy I am in the same situation- i came off my injection 5weeks ago and have had all sorts- sore boobs, stomache aches allsorts- but no period. I was a little confused and tested as suggested but it was negative it did make me crap as i was really hopeful i had conceived. I really hope it doesnt take two years (I read that somewhere too) I was on it for about 6years- i have found your story reassuring though lilquidditchkel!

I was on depo for 9 years. Stopped Dec 03. Periods returned June 04 Concieved DD Dec 05.

So 6m for period - Yes.
2 years to concieve - Yes.

I am suprised they gave you Depo to give your body a break. I will never touch the stuff again. Since coming off it I have lost wieght and realised that I was actually quite depressed all the time I was on it.

I was on Depo for 3 years finished Feb 04 due to putting on weight and took an allergic reaction the last time for some reason. Periods started again Oct 04 and concieved(happy accident ) September 05. So yes that adds up too.

Crunchynutter when was the last time you had an injection? Coz they last 3 months so may still be in your system.

I now happily have the implant LOL. No more for me I must say.

I had my last injection NOv 2004, took until September 2006 for periods to return to normal and have just got a bfp this month - 3.5 years later! Good luck...
This is my 3rd and although 3 is enough for me would never touch depo again...
I'm surprised also that your doctor gave you that especially for a temporary measure - I would get back and complain to the doctor - when I saw a consultant last year they said its an awful contracceptive especially if you are thinking of having more children..
Anyway on the bright side you may be lucky and conceive fairly quickly..fingers crossed.

Must just add - I only had the depo for 9 months - 3 injections..

it doesnt matter how long you were on depo or how many shots, it'll take just as long however many you had apparently.

Did you all know that it can cause osteoporosis?

That you are only supposed to ever take it for maximum of 4 years in your lifetime?

That they use it in the US to chemically castrate sex offenders??

No-one tells you anything should be banned.

God thats scary they gave me it at 15 to stop my periods as I became incredibly ratty and got major pains everymonth and obv the contraceptive side!

Is that true about the castration Fadge?

God! i was on it for 6years! I was due for my top up 5weeks ago (tomorrow) youngbutnotdumb So it should definately be out of my system by now! Still no period though- i keep thinking 'itll be here tomorrow' I was only just 17 when i started it too- they have put weight gain down to ageing and never mentioned the risk of oesteoporosis or that i should only have it for 4 years or that it causes depression or anything else! Who can you trust if not doctors?? ITs crazy!

NatalieJane Did i talk to you before about this? Congratulations on the baby!

I have just come from the doctors and i mentioned i have had no period yet (only ran out 3 weeks ago) and she said 'ahhhhhhh' then said 'well it can take a little while to get out of your system' thats all she said, but fairly encouraged by the 'ahhhhhh' lol! even though by the sounds of it on here i shouldnt be!!!!

It should defo be banned spesh if its used to meically castrate sex offenders in america! How can they allow us to take this as contraception when it is used for that?

I had a bleed bout 5 weeks ago whilst I was on it which i hadnt had the previous time I had it but nothing since then! fingers crossed it gets out of my system as quick as you LILQUIDDITCHKEL!
