Hi Sweetbean,

This is a question that has plagued me and I think there are many different answers. When I first was TTC I went to my GP and she said to drink as normal and only quit once you get a BFP. I had completely cut back so I went out and got pissed a few times and got a BFP. That ended sadly 13 weeks later when I miscarried (not related to drinking!) I then moved and changed docs who said that I should cut right back if TTC. So obviously is different from GP to GP.

After my MMC by body took ages to sort itself out. When I was sent to a specialist because of still not getting AF he put me on clomid. When I asked about drinking he said to go ahead and drink and that most babies were conceived with the help of alcohol! He is a fertility expert so I trust him.

So I have done everything from drinking a fair amount, to totally abstaining (last month) and cutting totally back. I think you need to enjoy yourself and not obsess, so a few glasses of wine can't hurt. As long as you stop (or drastically cut back) once you get a BFP it should be fine.

But I imagine others may have different views...

Pleased I could be of some service. I am definitely have the odd glass of wine (or 3!). My AF is due Monday. I'm on clomid at the moment. Sorry to hear about your MC. It's tough, isn't it? anyway, as you know the whole TTC thing is hard and stressful so as my doc says- anything that can help you to relax and enjoy is no bad thing!

Just made bread- great for relieving tension!

sweetbean - fwiw I am still drinking although moderately until I get that BFP. Have had various things go wrong (including2 mc) and none of hte doctors said anything about cutting alcohol out entirely while ttc.

This thread has made me feel better - been ttc for 9 months now and had mc at 6 weeks couple of months ago and really feel like glass of wine tonight but it's day 18 of cycle so was feeling guilty but think I will now! Abstention is all right for a few months but by now I'm not so hopeful about BFP each month any more and could do with the relaxation!

I read somewhere that baby doesn't share your bloodstream until a couple of weeks after BFP (the placenta takes time to grow) so drinking up to BFP poses no harm for baby. However heavy drinking is not good for anybody, so moderation is the word
When I started ttc I stopped drinking during the 2ww but that was nearly 2 years ago and it just made me feel miserable when AF arrived that I'd denied myself a glass of wine for nothing. Am drinking a glass of wine right now on day 21.

i have only been drinking when af is in, but if what nmm says is true (and it makes sense) sod it. i might have a vino now and again.
maybe its best to live as normal unitl bfp.

Yes you should definitely stop drinking while TTC - you will only spill your wine and your partner may well find it offputting
