Conception

Is it true that luteal phase length doesn't change?

My cycles have been between 26 and 31 days long for last year. However, since I started charting on FF a couple of months ago, it seemed my LP last cycle was 8 days and my LP the previous month was 13 days. However, I was under the impression that the LP length stays the same? If so, and mine is only 8 days long, then I assume I am not able to conceive :'(

It can change. I ov on cd21 and conceived (31 day cycle at that point). I used to ov on day 12-14 of a 28 day cycle.

@KalaLaker, so it can change from month to month as my FF charting suggests? I can't remember what my cycles were like when I conceived my son (who is now 3) but I just assumed my luteal phase lengths were good enough to conceive at that point but since having him, they have become short and are unlikely to change again.

Generally it won’t change radically from month to month, maybe a day or two? But a gradual change in lp is not atypical.

Hmm, okay, thank you. Am gutted to see that my luteal phase is quite short.

Don’t worry there’s lots of things you can try to lengthen your luteal phase. Generally it does stay stable. If it moves about a lot it can signify other issues. But it’s good you’re chatting.

How long have you been TTC?

Oh, only been trying for two months so I'm not concerned about the length of time we've been trying, more that I've only just realised how short my luteal phase is and I'm worried that this is bad news.

I do have a son who is three years old so presumably my LP was not this short when we conceived him!

@MouseLove So, to give you an idea, this is my chart for last month and for this month (so far) - if FF is correct, then my LP was 8 days last month. And this cycle, I can't fell whether I've ovulated yet or not but as I am currently on my third day of ewcm, I assume I haven't yet.

Is that the right chart? LP looks to be 13 days.

Although looking at this, I'm wondering if ov day was actually day 15...

From looking at your temps (blurry as I’m on my phone) I think FF has got your ovulation date wrong by a couple of days...

I think since you’ve only been TTC 2 months (have you been charting longer?) your charts don’t really seem certain. Are you taking your temperature consistently?

The luteal phase should see a clear rise in temperature, and stay high. Yours are very inconsistent and do drop below the cover line.

Honestly you’re so early in your journey, regular sex like you have been having this cycle is what you should focus your efforts on. Don’t worry too much at this stage as your luteal phase may be completely normal but the bbt readings causing concern unnecessarily.

Good work on the BD this cycle!! FX for you. X

@MouseLove, I just thought that dropping below the coverline once of twice didn't really matter. Most of them are taken within the same hour every day but there are some that aren't. This cycle, I have got better at it 😵

@Polly99 That's what I was thinking (hoping)

@MouseLove I have been focusing on CM and CP and I started getting ewcm three days ago, plus my cervix has been high for a few days now. Hence why we've been dtd daily this week 😂

My LP is only 8-10 days and I’ve got three children all conceived quickly. So it can happen!

My LP is 9 days. It’s something which can hinder or not. I wouldn’t worry this soon.

And no, there should be no dips below the cover line unless it’s an implantation dip at around 9 DPO so fingers crossed for you.

Xxx

If I ovulated on day 15 rather than 18, which I think I did, then the crosshairs would be lower anyway.

Still, that was last month and this month is hopefully going to be different :-) I'll keep charting and hopefully it'll be really clear when I've ovulated.

Anytime. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you. My LP has been shorter since I had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks back in February. Sadly I’m still TTC, 14 months now. X
